Changing Formula
THIS MAY SOUND REALLY CRAZY BUT MY DAUGHTER HAS BEEN OM SOY FORMULA FOR ALMOST 6 MTHS NOW AND I PURCHASED 22 CANS OF MILK BASED BECAUSE IT WAS A SUPER GREAT DEAL. IM IN LIMBO. I AM CONSIDERING CHANGING HER OVER TO THIS FORMULA BUT AM VERY GUN SHY. SHE HAS BEEN A TERRIFIC BABY, UNLIKE MY OTHER 2 (ONE HAD COLIC AND EAR INFECTIONS FOR THE OTHER). SHE HAS ALREADY STARTED ALL KINDS OF BABY FOOD AND SOME TABLE FOODS. SHE SEEMS TO HAVE HER MAMAS STOMACH OF STEEL, SO I DONT THINK IT WILL HURT HER. BUT IM SO SCARED OF MESSING UP AND MAKING THE NEXT 6 MONTHS MISERABLE. ANY SUGGESTIONS?
So What Happened?™
MY CONCLUSION SEEMS TO BE THIS. WE ARE NOT GOING TO CHANGE FORMULAS. IM TOO AFRAID TO MESS WITH HER. SHE SLEEPS THRU THE NIGHT AND HAS BEEN SINCE SHE WAS ABOUT 1 1/2 MONTHS. SO I DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO SLEEPLESS NIGHTS. IF YA KNOW WHAT I MEAN. THANKS FOR ALL YOUR POST AND IT SEEMS TO BE THAT THE MAJORITY OF YOU SAY TO STICK WITH SOY. SO FAR THAT SEEMS TO BE MY BEST BET ANYWAY. THANKS SO MUCH FOR ALL YOUR COMMENTS, AND I HOPE ONE DAY I CAN BE OF ASSISTANCE TO YOU.

Start with making the bottles 3/4 of the old stuff for a couple days. Then do 1/2 and 1/2. Then 1/4. In a little over a week, she should be switched. I had to do the same thing with my daughter. I heard of a study saying that girls on soy formula were having fertility issues later in life. And as for no kids doing well on regular formula, if that was true, they wouldn't sell it. I switched my daughter at 5 months, and she had absolutly no problems.

Both of my children were premature and both were on cereal before the 3rd month of their lives. And like you said they had stomachs made of steel. I'd open at least one can and try it and if it seems to bother her then switch back and you can always have a yard sale and sale it or donate it to a local church or food bank.I say as long as the child is not lactose intolorant then go for it!!!Have a great day!T.

is there a reason she is on soy formula? if not then wean her over to reg. formula. i had to try the soy formula b/c my son was a puker. they thought it was the reg. formula making him puke but that wasn't the case so i just switched him back over to re. formula myself. if there isn't a reason that she is on it then it doesn't matter what kink u feed her.

I think it would be a bit foolish to switch your child's formula until you talk to her doctor. Switching her milk like that all of a sudden could lead to stomach and intestinal problems, like colic. Please consider your decision to change it until her doctor is consulted.

Okay, let me start off by saying that I have a huge problem with cow's milk being given to human babies. So, this may not be the most impartial advice that you'll get. : )
Cow's milk is one of the leading things that humans are allergic to, and many people do not even know that they are allergic. It can cause very vague symptoms like gas, skin problems, occassional diarrhea, etc. Most people chalk it up to "something they ate" or a simple virus, etc.
I was unable to breastfeed either one of my children and was unaware of milk's effects when my son was born. He drank a lactose-free formula because he had a horrible time trying to digest regular formulas. My daughter was on a soy formula the entire first year. It was only later that we put all of the information together, but my son has suffered from colon problems his entire life. We have to work constantly to keep his intestinal tract balanced and working smoothly. My daughter has never had any intestinal problems. Do I blame the milk? Absolutely, but I know that there are bound to be other contributing factors as well.
We are now a milk-free house and everyone is doing much better. My kids use soy milk on cereal and drink soy shakes made with soy milk for snacks. And yes, they like them. : ) Your daughter's digestive system is used to the soy formula and may become very upset if you change now. Not everyone is allergic to milk, but if things are going well with your current nutrition plan, then why risk it?
Donate the regular formula that you got at a great deal to the Rescue Mission family shelter or to the Food Bank. Someone will be very grateful to receive such a generous gift.

Normally if a formula is working a ped will discourage from switching. Before you decide to switch think about if this will be a permanat switch - just because the formula was a great deal now - what's it's regular price? If it runs out before you stop using formula you'll have to give her something. Switching is one thing, but switching back and forth is a complete different subject.
If you do decide to make the switch, the general advice is to make it slow and ease into it. If she's on 8 oz bottles make the first couple with 6 oz of her formula and 2 oz of the new and slowly go to more of the new and less of her old until the bottles are just new formula.
I had to switch formulas a few times before I found one that didn't make my girls sick - they all had issues with soy based, no matter what brand, and had issues with several of the 'name' brands of milk based. But other than formula I've not had any food issues with them and they're 8y, 33mo and 22mo.
