Chalkboard Paint - Yukon,OK

I used it on my classroom wall when I taught in NC, you have to do a few
Coats to get it dark enough letting it dry between. But once it's done and dark its just like a chalkboard and works great! My little kids loved it because as one told me it made him feel like he was doing something bad and gettin away with it lol (kids aren't allowed to color on walls normally)

I used a spray-on chalkboard paint for my son's room. We did not do it directly on the wall, instead we painted a roll of metal flashing and then attached that to the wall with molding around the edges. That way we got a smoother surface to start with, it doubles as a magnet board, and it will be easy to remove. It took 2 or 3 coats, but was easy to apply. We bought a big office-style eraser which works OK. Using water works better, but my son let the colored water run down onto the regular wall below. We do not use sidewalk chalk- it's rougher and can scratch the paint.

I made my own once and it turned out great! You just get 1 tbs of powdered tile grout (I bought it at lowes) and mix with some craft paint. Then once it's dry, you rub a piece of chalk all over it (sideways) then wipe it off and your ready to go! I painted mine onto a wooden heart and I use it as a photo prop when I have photo shoots. I made it a nice dark purple. It was super easy and really cute.

I bought my paint at walmart. 2 - 3 small cans (i think they were 1/2 gallons or something). We painted the top half of my son's room (bottom half was gray, and then we put up a chrome edging between the two). I love it!!! The chalk wipes off easily with a wet wash cloth, however there is some residue (if you wipe it off, let it dry, and then wipe it off again, it comes off as well.) 2 coatings were plenty, and we rolled it on like regular paint. Just follow the directions on the can, and go for it!!!

Was not crazy about it. However, I would read other responses before you
listen to me. I think I bought it at Home Depot. I want to try again but the
door that I want to paint (basement side) is new and I am afraid I will ruin it.

I have never used it because it seems to be something that must be applied perfectly to be effective. I know people that use it for their businesses. In that application they used four coats and make sure their employees don't go crazy with drawing thick.

Like a regular chalkboard water works well to remove the chalk. Like paint water regularly applied isn't good. Ya know?

If I were you I would go to a premium paint shop, you know one that has employees that actually know how to paint, and ask they what is the best way to apply chalk paint. :)

I got my paint at Wal-Mart. We have a square on the kitchen wall and on the toy room wall and then two press boards that the older kids use and can move them to rearrange thier rooms. I like it. It took a couple of coats ( directions on the can) it wasn't a pain to do. If you just use a dry towel there is a residue left, but if you use a damp cloth to clean it, it dries fine and can reuse it over and over. We have had ours for 4 years now and use it daily still for notes.

I like it much better than the dry erase paint we got!

I didn't use it personally, although we have been considering it as well, but a coworker of mine used it in her classroom a number of years ago. They just taped off a block of space with painters tape and painted within the lines. They had to do 3 coats, I think, and it took a long time just b/c they had to let it completely dry in between, but after that it has been practically maintenance free! I'm pretty sure she bought it at Home Depot. The chalk comes off easily, it is also magnetic and you can clean it with a damp cloth if it gets too dusty. You may consider nailing up a wooden border (like chair rail type stuff) just because when you erase the chalk could brush off onto the other parts of the wall. I don't know if it would stain or not, but it might help to keep the chalk dust sort of contained.

My hubby made a chalkboard for our kids when they were small... rather than painting directly onto the wall, he used a smooth piece of plywood and used the basic blackboard paint from the hardware store. This was probably 20+ years ago, so I have no idea what brand.

I like the idea of painting a separate board, that way it is easier to change/get rid of when you don't want a chalkboard wall anymore.

We made my daughter a chalk board on her bedroom wall. It was very easy and we got the paint at home depot. The chalk comes off very easily but I didn't think about it and didn't put a ledge on the bottom and the dust gets everywhere!

We had a table that my daughter used for makeup. When she moved out she didn't want it anymore and I washed it. It never had any finish on it, just bare wood. We bought the Krylon spay on chalk board paint in green and after cutting down the legs and two coats of spray paint, letting it dry between coats it worked like a charm. That was about 7 years ago, we just use a wet rag to clean it off. It cleans up very nice if you wipe it down, rinse out the rag and wipe it again.

I used black chalkboard paint (I think I got it at Lowe's) on the wall beneath my kitchen bar. The kids were always putting their grubby hands on that wall and it looked nasty. I gave it two coats and it worked great. It applied jus like regular paint. I did it in an afternoon while my youngest was at Mother's Day Out (and I'm not remotely crafty).

Now occassionally I will "decorate" the wall myself for a holiday or something with the chalkboard markers and after they've dried for a few days it takes a Mr. Clean eraser to get them off - I'm fairly sure because of the texture of the wall underneath. The chalk itself usually comes off easily with a wet paper towel (again, I think if the wall was smooth it would come off easier dry - and I've never gone and gotten a chalkboard eraser). Also, one issue we have (minor in my opinion) is the chalk dust often ends up noticably on the floor. No big deal as it wipes up super-easy from our tile but I can only assume it would vaccuum just as easily from carpet. We have that whole wall done, it's been at least two years, and although it looks like a "used" chalkboard (yes, noticable tint of chalk left) it has held up great. I get tons of compliments and it is WAY better than the grubby wall we had before! I wouldn't hesitate to do it again!!

Edit: After reading the posts below I wanted to note that my youngest has accidentaly chalked on our "normal" wall next to the chalk wall once or twice and it wipes off just fine. Also, the paint I used was not magnetic.
