Cell Phone During the Movie - Vent!

Ok, I just got home from seeing a movie with hubby and the kids. The lady in the row in front of us and to the side must have checked her cell at least 15 times during the movie! What the heck!!??? Does she not realize a florescent light is a little obvious in a DARK room?? I started sort of making a loud "UH" noise every time she did it but apparently it wasn't loud enough. Now why is it that every time I should keep my mouth shut I don't and every time I SHOULD say something I don't???!!! I actually told my husband to kick the back of her chair but he just looked at me. Has technology taken over so much that we can't sit and watch a movie for 90 minutes???!!! Ok, thanks...I just had to get that out!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

to Lisa K, you must not go to the movies very often. There is not a "sign" that say's it, theres a big commercial right before the movie comes on that says it. And I own an insurance agency so if anyone could justify checking their CrackBerry, it would be ME. We were about 8 rows from the front so moving we would still see her unless we sat in the FRONT row. Next time you go to the movie, open your phone and see how bright it is. Thanks for the comments mamas. Its always interesting to hear other points of views. Have a great weekend (especially if you go to the movies!!) :o)

don't blame you, vent away! i would be MAD too! my husband or i, one of us, probably would have said something. i mean it even ASKS you, PLEASE TURN YOUR CELL PHONES OFF. how much more obvious could it be? you could also go ask an attendant and they could ask the person to stop, or escort them out. they don't want people not going there because rude behavior is allowed.

i feel you sister. today i almost missed a light because the bimbo in front of me didn't notice the light had turned green. on the CELL PHONE. go figure. i just rolled my eyes because it's SO common these days, such stupid behavior...but then i really got irritated when she pulled into her DRIVEWAY ten seconds after the light. if you're that close to the house do you REALLY need to endanger people's lives by being on the stupid phone? come on people!

Gahhhhhhhh that irritates me too! Cell phones are supposed to be OFF in the theater anyways. The only time I keep mine on is when my husband and I are together, meaning a babysitter is with our kids. I think that's understandable, but I keep it on vibrate and if it does go off, I remove myself from the theater before taking it out.

I'm a loud mouth though, so I would have probably said something like "Um that's really distracting and unless you want to reimburse me for the cost of my movie ticket, you need to take it outside before you check it again!" and I'd probably say it loudly. After all, what are they going to do? They're supposed to have it off in the first place, so if they complain about you, they're just admitting guilt.

I'm a self-confessed Blackberry addict, but even I manage to turn it off during a movie. It's so darned expensive to go see a movie that I would feel like I was wasting good money, checking my BB the whole time!

Maybe that lady left her new baby at home with a sitter for the first time and was nervous something would go wrong. I don't know... that's the only thing I can think of that would make sense!

I completely agree! Some day I'm going to ram some stupid fool's cell phone in a place they never imagined it going. Don't even get me started on the hoochie mamas roaming Target and Walmart and every grocery store and mall blathering on and on and on about all of their personal business! I don't want to hear it, and I don't care about their dumb, vapid lives! If you are hopelessly tied to your phone -get over it! Sooner or later they are going to come out with conclusive evidence that they contribute to brain tumors -just wait!

I have the same problem. It happens to me EVERY time. I finally kicked the back of this girl's chair one time and said "I didn't pay to be blinded by your cell phone". It makes me so mad!

Oh, heck, I'll add to your vent. We live in an age where you no longer have privacy. Big brother is watching and everyone who has your number is stalking. Forget having any alone time because there are constant interruptions. I miss the good ole days where you could disappear for a few hours without any phone calls, text messages, or beeps. Don't get me wrong, cell phones are great and convenient. But, along with this new age of communication, many people have lost sight of good manners too.

I am NOT condoning her in anyway and completely agree with your frustration! But just to play devils advocate. . . were you at a kids movie?

My kids are much older now, but when they were little, nothing used to tick me off more than to pay for a babysitter, pay for a movie that was PG-13 or R and have to listen to a baby or kid babbling through the whole thing. I don't care that they are not old enough to understand, I paid good money NOT to have to hear kids during a movie!

I turn my phone completely off at the movie, at the doctor's office, during meetings, etc. No one needs me that bad!

Peer pressure has a good track record, but we are so socially segmented now that there is little social agreement about what's allowable. But if we DID agree, then everybody around this person could yell, "Hey, shut that thing OFF!"

I just had a gleefully wicked thought – what if everybody within range tossed ice cubes, popcorn, or candy wrappers at the offender?

I don't get it. I turn my phone to vibrate and only check to see if the babysitter is having an emergency. Otherwise, what the HECK! This is also the reason I prefer to go to movies during "off" times.

I've been in movie theaters before and had to deal with:

*babies crying
*cell phones ringing (and being answered!)
*extremely loud bags of plastic candy be opened/closed during quiet, emotionally gripping scenes
*my seat getting kicked repeatedly
*random laughter at completely innapropriate times
*people using the empty seat next to my head as a footrest

And many, many more....the LEAST of which is open cell phones in dark theaters. This, my friend, is why I wait for the DVD. That way, if someone annoys me, I can verbally or physically respond to it and not get kicked out. ;-)

Sheesh - that drives me crazy too.

We have a REAL problem where I live (Boca Raton, FL) with people (ADULTS!) who categorically do not seem to know how to behave in a movie theater.

About the last 10 times I've gone, I've dealt with everything from someone kicking the back of my seat through the entire movie, to texting (I detest that clicking sound), to surfing the internet, to out-and-out chit chatting (in a normal speaking voice) DURING THE MOVIE. I'm to the point where I'd rather just wait for the DVD.

Maybe it's a symptom of our society, maybe it's just Boca . . . whatever it is - yikes.

I don't understand why people are so "attached" to their cell phones. If you can't turn it off for 2hours and kick back and relax, then you got a problem.
One time when I was at the movies, this girl sitting next to me, spent the whole time texting.

Technology is great, but then comes a time during the day when you just need to take a break from it all. One of those ways is going to a movie

I always get calls, no matter where I am it seems I always get a call. I usually sit in the back row and turn my backlights down as low as possible with the volume on vibrate only. I try to be as movie friendly as possible but if I get a call that I can't get rid of in just a moment I go out in the hall.

If I am having an issue with another movie goer and they are annoying me I just step out and tell staff. They will go and stand in the back and watch the person. If they see them get their phone out they will step forward and tell them to turn their phone off. It's their job and they can enforce it.

Guess how I know?????

Why didn't you just move? I mean, really, it's not like she was talking on it the whole time which would give you something to complain about. I've checked my phone several times in the theater when I have it on silent (b/c I am trying to be courteous since even vibrate is annoying in the theater). I check it because when I go to the movies I have my 2 young kids somewhere else, so I'm sorry to inconvenience you and everyone else, but I need to check frequently to make sure that my babysitter hasn't called with something wrong. Stop being so uptight.

Must not have been that good of a movie that you noticed this woman's cell phone light that many times.

As a former movie theatre manager, I can't imagine kicking someone out for checking their messages - there is no noise (ringing is a different story of course) or talking. However, I would kick some out if they kicked someone's seat or if they started grunting at random.

I am not advocating that technology interrupt a 2 hr movie, and I agree that most folks should be able to go 2 hrs without checking their phone, but seriously, a cell phone light is so distracting that is ruined your movie?

I have never seen a sign saying turn off your cell phones at a theatre. I have a business and I LOVE the fact that I can stay in touch when out and about. I would not turn it off but I would also not let it distract me or those around me.

I would not have sat there and groaned or kicked for that matter. Seriously?
I would have moved.
