Catholic Churches for a Babtism

I had my children baptized at St Issac Jogues in Niles. They are really nice and laid back. I just had to join the parish fill out a form. We were married in City Hall and there was never a problem with the godparents or our marriage.

We had our kids baptized at St. Peter and Paul's in Cary and we were not married by the Catholic Church and only one of the Godparents for each of my children was Catholic. I am not Catholic myself, my husband is and they didn't have any problems with that at all. Beautiful church too so makes for great pictures. It is on 1st Street in Cary, IL. If you have a church in mind ask them if they would have a class for Godparents that could fulfill their requirements. They give the Godparents a little card stating that they understand what it means to become a Godparent. We had to do that, not so much as we were Catholic but I had been divorced. The class took about an hour and a half and we were certified to go to the baptism.

We went to a pretty strict catholic church and only one of the couple had to be catholic, our couples werent even married. For example we did his sister who is single and Catholic and my brother who also is single and not Catholic for my daughters Godparents. Hope that helps!

My church required that the god parents just be active members and their preist had to sign a form for us.

I'm not sure about all of the req.for our church, but to baptize my daughter they made us join the church which was just a simple form I had to fill out! You can always call and ask. My church is St. John the Apostle Catholic Church in Villa Park, IL I know they did want one of the godparents to be baptized catholic! I have gone there my entire life including getting married there so that is why I'm not sure of all the req. The priest is Father Bob Duda and he is pretty laid back!

Hi M., God parents never have to be married. One of them just needs to be confirmed. Regarding the parents, I think you may have luck at Holy Family Parish in Inverness. I don't know the phone number but I am sure you can find it by googling it.

I did not even know that is a requirement. I really do not think it is at all...
My DH and I were not married in a Catholic church because he was married b4, and the god parents were my brother and sister, niether of them married yet.. A baptism is to welcome the child to that religion and to promise to raise the baby as a Christian. We had our children baptised at our parish in MN, not here, but all parishes should be the same.
If you belong to a parish and they said no, then find a new one! Otherwise join a parish you like, Talk to them about what they may require. I am a member at St. Thomas of Villanova and I LOVE that parish!! It is in Palatine. It is a very loving and welcoming parish. Father Tom actually make makes my son enjoy going to mass! (how many 9 year olds do that??) Good luck!

I think the rules are pretty much the same across all the Catholic Archdioceses.

1) The Godparents do not have to be married. You can use unrelated people as Godparents. However, to be officially "listed" as a Godparent in the Church registry, the Godparent must be a Catholic in good standing at his/her own parish.

2) My Church allowed additional "Godparents" who were not part of the Catholic Church to stand during the ceremony. Some families had 6 people stand up for the baby...and two who were Catholic were "official" Godparents, but the others stood with them. There was no mention of who's Catholic and who's not, so it didn't really matter during the ceremony.

3) I don't think the Church cares whether or not you were married in the Catholic Church. Mine didn't. As long as one of you (you or your husband) is a registered member of that parish in good standing, they will Christen your baby.

4) If you (or your husband) is not a registered member of your local Church, call your Church asap and find out their requirements for registration. Usually they have a meeting you attend for registration.

I had my boys baptized at St. Pius in Lombard. They are located on Meyers and Madison. I believe they required one Godparent to be Catholic.

When I baptized my son 3years ago we didn't have any issues with god parents. They never asked us about the religion of the god parents.
I would call the churched in your area.
I do know that some will not baptize your child if you are not a member of the church.

Our daughter was baptised at Our Lady Good Coucil in Aurora, IL and the God parents were not mareid or married catholic. My Husband and I were maried there eventhough I am not Catholic. They never asked us about being married in the church for the baptism.

my son was baptized at st. vincent in river forest and i also looked at visitation in elmhurst where i grew up. neither had those requirements. i know churches prefer that you are a parishioner.

We baptized my son at St. Anne's in Barrington 2years ago and the only requirement I was told was that one of the godparents needed to be raised as a Catholic. Hope this helps.
