Cat Urine On/in Travertine Tile

Okay, so, after being gone for about a week (Wednesday to Wednesday) on a family vacation, I discovered a paper bag which had shoes for one of my babysitters had been repeatedly peed in/on by my cats. The paper bag was near the front door so the next time she came over, it would not be forgotten. This act was clearly vindictive and knowing their behavior, I had removed both the dog bed and my daughter's little "couch"/foam bed from access before we left. They were restricked to the primary living areas and all doors to all rooms were closed to prevent this type of activity. Unfortunately, I missed this bag. The bottom was completely saturated and when I lifted it to toss the bag, one box and one of the pairs of shoes (which also had been saturated), the tile had an almost slimely brownish film of pee. As I said, this was vindictive as they were not alone or uncared for during that time.

I wiped this up immediately, and used some clorox greenworks on it. I then applied a baking soda paste and allowed it to dry overnight, before rubbing it off with a broom.

Chalk it up to being 8 weeks preggo, but I still think it smells. Hubby says it doesn't. We have no idea how long the urine sat there. The tiles are sealed, but I don't know with what. I am willing to reseal them, if necessary after removing the smell. What do you ladies think? Is there anything else I can try to lift the residual smell without damaging the travertine tiles?

Thanks.
~C.

try apple cider vinegar. My mom has alot of cats and sometimes they dont pee in the box and so far it has taken it out of everything, even clothes that have been washed and dried. I myself am 21 weeks preggo and think everything smells but can never smell cat pee at my moms. It has worked on male cat spray too that is hard to get rid of. There is also a product called Natures Miracle that works and it removes the smell to the cat too so it wont pee in that spot again. Maybe if you try both the vinegar first then the natures miracle.
Oh the natures miracle needs to be able to soak in to the area and dry so just spot test it first.
Hope this helps Good luck

Not sure who did the vindictive act, but here is something I found on the web.

Home Remedy for cat urine smell. This is a great recipe for removing cat urine odor from carpet. Start by blotting up as much of the urine as possible with old rags or paper towels. Next mix 3 parts water with one part vinegar and saturate the spot.Dry thoroughly using the same method mentioned above. Once dry, sprinkle the area with Baking Soda. Next mix ¾ cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution with one tsp. dish detergent and sprinkle over the Baking Soda. Try this first on a small inconspicuous area of the carpet to make sure the hydrogen peroxide won’t discolor your carpet. Next, use your fingers or an old brush to work the Baking Soda in. I’ve used an old hairbrush with little bits of plastic over the tips with good results. Allow this to dry and vacuum it up. If there’s still a slight odor when done, lather, rinse and repeat.

Are you suppose to be cleaning after cats while prego?

Cats 'scent' in an effort to get you home. It's not vindictive...they miss you! The easiest way to get a cat to come home when they're lost is to put out some old stinky clothing on the lawn. All your cat was doing was laying out a scent in an effort to get you home.

That being said, bleach is the most effective remedy for ridding a house of urine smells. Pour on, wipe off. And hug your cats, they love you.

The cats missed you.....that was all......and I was going to suggest vinegar.........let it soak on the floor for a bit........apple vinegar is fine.......if that doesn't work, although it should............try buying some frebreze and spraying it on there.........

I would NOT use Bleach, bleach has many harmful ingredients that will hurt you (lungs, skin etc) and the cats.....if they get it on their paws.

Good Luck and take care.

The problem with any pet urine on natural stone is that the stone is porous by nature. With ANY stone, but especially marble you must take great care to not use any acidic cleaners (orange/citrus based is acidic too!!) These acids can etch (permanently mark) your floors.

Your best bet would be to rinse with a mild alkaline based solution (hot works best) repeatedly and blot as much out as possible to prevent the urine from going deeper into your stone..

Never use products like Lime Away, ammonia, lemon juice, vinegar, bleach, or Windex on Travertine!
