Cat Urine

Our cats have gotten extremely jealous of our son and of course they dont get as much attention as they should and they now have started urinating on things. My sons bouncy seat, plastic bins with stuff in them, possibly furniture, one of them even peed on my curtain!!! I dont know what to do, we have debated about getting rid of the cats but would feel horrible if they went to the humane society and couldnt get adopted. Other than this problem, they are sweet loving cats. They are brother and sister and are almost 5. I know that if we placed them in a home where they got more attention the problem would stop, I think now they smell it and just go. Any ideas on how to get rid of the urine smell?

What can I do next?

There is are some spray that Petco and Petsmart sell.It must have an ENZYME in it to work. I think there may be several brands on the market, but as long as it has the enzyme it should do it.

Whatever you do, DON'T USE SOAP or Conventional cleaning products to clean up the urine! We had to replace our entryway-hardwood floors because our cat chose that area to show his displeasure with our first child. I didn't know any better and tried to clean it up with soap and water-huge no no. The only way to get rid of the odor is to use an enzyme type of odor remover. It eats the odor and can take several applications before it totally works.

As far as the cats go, I'm afraid you will probably need to find a new home for them. We had to do that with our cat, and were lucky to find the perfect home for him. We've never heard anything back from the new owner that the urinating thing was an issue, I totally believe it was all the stress from the new baby and the loss of attention that came from that.

Good luck-sorry you're in this position.

I had a similar issue when me and the kids moved in with my boyfriend & his two cats. There's something in the pet aisle at Target (and maybe Cub) - check the labels and make sure it's specifically for cat urine. I'd tried everything else & that's the only thing that ever gets rid of that smell completely. Let your curtains soak in it in the washer for a few hours & add a little bit of laundry detergent in too. You can buy it in the spray bottle or a jug for adding to the wash.
The special litter mentioned in another post sounds good, too. I'd also try to make sure you're giving them a little extra attention. They're just like kids - if they feel neglected they're gonna try to get your attention some way.
Good luck!

We had the same problem when our second daughter was born. We used a 3 part water to 1 part vinegar solution on the carpet whenever they puked/pooped to get our attention. The worst was when my darling kitty who sat by my side on full bed rest for 4 months PEED on our NEW, microfiber sectional! UGHHHH! I found a product on the internet called "Urine Pooling". It was amazing. We had tried Nature's Miracle and it didn't work. The Urine Pooling was amazing! We did it twice and the smell is completely gone. I was worried about the hot, humid days of summer, but even then we've had no odor.

Don't get rid of the cats!

My perfectly behaved cat started doing the same thing when my daughter was born. I had enough and didn't want to but gave our cat to my sis-inlaw a good home and we could go visit whenever we wanted a perfect situation. Well the cat was doing the samet thing in their house too, so she's now mostly a outside cat. The problem never changed, nor got better. And I swear she was a perfect cat before I was pregnant and we loved her with all of our heart. There was nothing we could do to get her to stop.

As far as having a smelly house try washing in vinegar.

Hello,

I'm sorry to hear about your cats and the problems with them urinating and being jealous of your son. It can be such a difficult transition for our pets!

Definitely use Nature's Miracle for cleaning. Not sure where you are located, but Pets Supplies Plus carries a great variety of products.

I would also recommend talking to your vet just to make sure they don't have a urinary tract problem (just to rule it out...) and talking to a behaviorist at your local Animal Humane Society. Minnesota Valley Humane Society in Burnsville has specialists on staff that are very helpful with a variety of issues.

Good luck!

This is a really complicated issue in my opinion. I think to assume the problem will go away for another family is pretty risky. Will you disclose the reason why you are getting rid of the cats? To not do so would be really unfair to the new family - I know because it happened to me. I adopted an adult cat with this exact problem and it was not disclosed. After 3 years of trying to work with the cat on this peeing issue(several litter boxes, religious cleaning of the boxes, using the already mentioned products to get rid of the urine smell as much as possible, more attention, vet visits to rule out physical issues), I made the decision that I had to put her down. There was nothing physically wrong with her but I do think there was something mentally askew and she just could not handle being in a house with more than one cat. Anyway, I think it's important to be honest and upfront with people if you go this route.

Try Cat Attract litter: http://cats.about.com/cs/litterbox/fr/catattract.htm

My cat was also peeing on furniture when I moved into my husband's house. The new litter worked well. It's designed to help cat's who pee outside the box. I also bought new litter boxes to start fresh (a small price compared to your furniture).

It would also help to try to give your cats more attention. I know time is limited, but their peeing is just their way to cry out for your attention. They need your unconditional love (even though they are doing things that make you mad) just like your children do.

Good luck!!

I hope this is an issue you are able to work through. After working at a Humane Society, I hate to see loved animals go there for a behavior problem. But I know it is frusterating! My cats went through a few different issues when my daughter was born.

I love Nature's Miracle, we use to buy it by the gallon. You can get it a Petsmart or Petco. Gets out puke, poop and pee and most other dirt. I use it all around the house, but it was really great on my couches. Even gets out my daughter's messes!

Good luck!
