OK - I am stumped on what kind of car seat to buy fro my big boy. He just turned 2 last month, but he is 37" and 35lbs... he is about to outgrow his convertible car seat (which only goes up to 40lbs, and his head is above the top of the seat). All the booster seats I see are recommended for 4+.... What do I do?

What can I do next?

I went to babiesRus website and found this...

http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2743346

If you can't open it I typed booster seat and it's by evenflo. These are basically the 2 I have (just newer models)...

Evenflo Chase DLX Booster Moonbeam
Evenflo Walnut Hill Chase Booster Car Seat

The top one I have for my 2 year old. And the other I have/had for my 6 and 8 year old girls. Had meaning my 8 year old decided this year it was too babyish. :) So I bought the regular booster seat for her.

I think these are great. They work for 20-100 lbs. You just use the harness until 40 lbs and then just a seatbelt with it the rest of the time.

I got the different model for my son thinking it would be a little cozier but overall I like my girls' better.

Hope this helps.

He definately needs to be in a 5-point harness for at least 2 more years...one I haven't seen mentioned yet is the Sunshine Kids Radian 80 (there's also a version that goes up to 65 pounds). It's a convertable that accomodates 5-80 pounds...and is narrower at the base so that it fits in most cars but still wide enough for a large child to sit in comfortably. http://sunshinekidsbaby.comfortfirst.com/

By Oregon Law (I saw you were in OR) you cannot put your son in a booster until he's 40 Lbs, so a Booster is out of the question :-)

My daughter is a little bigger than your son and we have her in a Britax marathon convertible seat rated up to 65 Lbs. They are a bit pricey, $200-250, but some of the safest on the market.

I would suggest taking your son to your local Babies'r'us and test out the different options. Our local one has a car's seat sitting in the isle and you can test it out on the cars seat with your child to test the fit.

Good luck shopping.

Check out the Safety 1st Apex 65. I have my 4 yr old in it. She is on the small side, about the same size as your big guy. It has a 5 pt harness for 22 to 65 lbs. You can use it later on as a booster up to 100lbs.

I would go to britaxusa.com they have seats with a highter weight limit. The regent which is a 5 pt harness goes all the way up to 80 lbs. If you go to their website it tells you the requirements for each seat. I have my almost 4 yr old in the regent because I like that they can stay safe in a harness instead of just a booster with a seat belt.

I have the Alpha Omega Carseat and it holds children until they are 100 pounds. I like it cause I used it when my daughter was an infant, and then it fliped around into a foward facing carseat, and then the base comes off and it turns into a booster seat. She is 36 inches tall and 35 pounds...so I think this would work for you too.

There are many brands for larger toddlers. The booster seats that have no back are for older kids(4 & up) The kind that you need to get will have a back on it. We have 2 of them that we bought at Wallmart & Toys R Us.

I have gone with the Britax Regent car seat for my kids. It has the 5 point harness and holds to 80 pounds and 53" height. It is pricey...$250ish price range. But we needed those size requirements for our kids. Check out their website at britaxusa.com Good luck!

Hi M.!

My little one just turned three and weighs 36 lbs and is very tall too! She's almost out grown her car seat as well. It seems the next step is a booster for the kids but that just isn't safe enough for them, they're only two and three! A friend of mine has a four year old who's the same size as my daughter and uses a Safeguard Go Booster Seat. It's the only booster on the market(at least that I've found) that has a 5 point harness for kids up to 60 lbs, but still can be used with a seat belt up to 100 lbs. It's nice and compact but still very safe. Hope this helps!

Hello,
I hope that you decided against putting your little one in a booster because it would not be safe for him. I would recommend the Sunshine kids radians. They come in either up to 65 or 80 lbs and they are a little cheaper than the Britax. You may be able to go to your local safe kids and get it even cheaper that is how we got ours. My almost 5 year old loves his sunshine kids seat. He calls it is race car driver seat.
Just a note to the moms who stated the Alpha Omega holds children up to 100 lbs. That is as a booster. The 5 point harness only goes to 40 lbs so don't think that would help with your situation and I would hope they are not using theirs as a 5 pt if their child is over 40 lbs because it would not be safe.

Do NOT put a 2yo in a booster. It is illegal and unsafe. He needs to be in a 5 pt harness for several more years. My almost 2yo is about the same size as your son. I recommend a Britax Regent (harnesses up to 80 pounds) or a Sunshine Kids Radian (harnesses up to 65 pounds, but has a higher height limit than other 65pound harness seats).

Please read everything carefully. Some people are saying they have seats that go up to 100 pounds, but they are convertible seats. The alpha omega, for example, only harnesses to 40 pounds and after that is used as a belt positioning booster.

Britax carseats are really good and often you can get them up to 65 lbs before you switch to booster.

You will need another convertible car seat that accomodates up to 65 lbs which should fit your child up to age 4 which is when they can then use a booster seat. Such a racket!!! We just bought the Britax Marathon which goes to 65 lbs.

When we got to this point, we just went ahead about the bigger car seat with the detachable booster. We couldn't get him in the convertable one anymore without him fussing. He liked the big boy one a lot better.

Two is way too young for a booster seat!!!! It is recommended that you keep your child in a carseat until at least the age of 4. There are plenty of carseats that now go up to approximately 65 pounds. BabiesRUs carries a couple of them or you can google the different brands on line. I recommend taking a trip to BabiesRUs where you can try out a few to see how you like them and possibly to see if they will fit in your car. Often there advertisements have a $10 coupon for carseats.

I have a son who is now 4 and is extremely tall for his age so I have been to several carseat inspection sites for advice. For the carseat you have now, for the height, he is good until the top of his ears hit the top of the carseat. If you are unsure you could visit one of the free carseat inspections for yourself. I'm pretty new to the area but I believe they have them once a month at M. Bridge. Most fire departments also have a certified person on staff for carseat inspections. Just give yours a call. Hope this helps.

We had the exact same problem. We bought a seat that is a one-piece seat that the seat belt holds in...I don't know i I can explain it. It has an attachment that lets you adjust the height of the shoulder strap of the seat belt, but you actually use the seatbelt of the car to strap him in. it hsa indentation where the lap belt goes across, and slots for adjusting the height of the shoulder strap (they carry them at Walmart). It goes up high in the back, and it raises him up several inches so he can see out the window. Our son is now 7, 120 pound, about 4 foot, 7 inches. And his head has been above the back for a year now....and he almost doesn't fit in it, side to side....but he has loved his big boy seat!!

ps... at 2, he was 37 1/2 inches and 37 pounds!!

Hello,
I would recommend looking at the weight of the booster not the age. I know I've seen booster seats that start at 30 lbs. And I've seen 2 yr. olds using them. Although I can't tell what is recommended as far as safety goes, some of them say the age and/or the weight. Sorry now that I'm looking at what I wrote I realize it isn't much help. Hope you get it figured out.

i just bought the graco platinum ($99)from babies 'r' us and the weight on it is 20-60 pounds. my daughter is 40" tall and she is no where near the top of it. whatsmore, you can change from the 5-point harness to using the car's lap belt after he reaches 40 pounds. btw, they have a back seat for you to try with him in the model to see if it will work for you guys. graco also makes a booster ($49) that is for 30-60 and it has the back support you want for your little guy. i don't like it as much (we have one for my hubby's car) because when she falls asleep in it her head is bobbing all over the place. hope this helps.

Those are reccomended average ages. Obviously your son is larger than average you have to go to the next size up car seat, which from the sound of things is a booster seat. I have this care seat for my daughter. I bought it at Wal-Mart.

I'm a police officer so I deal with car seats alot. You need to go based off his size not age in this case. It is dangerous for his head to be above the back of the seat. You need to shop around and find that fits his size. Because he's onlt two it will be hard to keep him in a seat belt positioning booster so I would definatly look for one with a five point harness.
