We're looking for a recommendation/non-recommendation for a carpet retailer and installer in Southeastern Michigan. We're looking for a good price and value for our basement.
Thanks!

Before you make a decision, please visit Central Carpet Wholesale on 8mile Rd just west of Lahser (east of Telegraph). I bought carpet for my basement from there when I was price shopping. The employees are long term, knowledgeable, friendly.. from the store itself, which is totally unlike other carpet stores. No salesmen to swarm you, it's not overwhelming... just a great old fashioned business where people know their stuff. When the guys came to lay the carpet, they were so quick, friendly, clean, polite, and professional that I was bowled over.

Since that first experience, every other room that needed new carpet in each new home has been through Central Carpet Wholesale. It's really tough to do anything on a budget and feel confident that you're getting a good product at a good price. I wish you luck with your search.

PS.... I can't believe I left out the price! lol... That's what drew me to them in the first place. The price for the carpet and installation, I was also carpeting a basement, was so low I had to have her redo it twice because I thought she made a mistake and didn't want any surprises later. I did choose a carpet they had on site which helped with immediate timing and price, but their prices overall are incredibly competitive.

I'm kind of shocked that anyone found Empire to be great. I just called them a few months ago for a foreclosed house we bought and renovated. It's about 2200 square feet and we had to re-carpet the whole thing, so LOTS of carpet. The estimator arrived at 11:40 a.m. for our 9-11 a.m. appt. (they give you that time range thing like the cable company - yuck.) When he finally arrived, he barely spoke English and then proceeded to give me a quote of just shy of $10,000 for the cheapest carpet they carry. In the next half hour (while I was trying to get him out of the house,) he kept calling his "manager" and dropping the price. He wouldn't take NO for an answer and just kept pressuring me for a deposit. His "final" offer was $6,000 with "great" padding. Seriously? A $4,000 swing in price in a half hour? If you've used Empire and accepted the price they quoted, I fear you've been robbed.

I called a few independents and got better pricing, but heavy pressure for huge deposits. Be wary of that in this economy. Lots of people taking deposits and disappearing. We ended up at Lowe's. $4,800 for the whole house with better padding than the Empire guy promised was his "best."

Just wanted to share my experience with you. It wasn't much fun, but we felt better trusting an established retailer right now.

Good luck - L.

I have used AR Kramer for carpet installation in both of my houses. Although not the cheapest, they have nice people to work with (Debbie or Jack are great) and if you request the carpet installation group headed by Miguel, your installed carpet will be perfect.

We also used Empire Today and it was wonderful. We could not have been happier with how things came out and it was so fast. They had some great specials and were willing to work with us on price so we would use them again for sure.

We had our basement finished 3 years ago. We had Empire Today come. I called on a Tuesday evening. A rep came by the next day with samples, and on Thursday or Friday it was installed. We were and are still happy with the quality of the service, the quick install and the professional job that was done! Please use our name as a reference. We live in Royal Oak by 11 mile and I75.
