Carnation/Nestle Good Start Formula

For the last 5 weeks I have been feeding my newborn Carnation/Nestle Good Start Formula (the green can...) And my newborn has very smelly and dark green bowel movements! Is anyone else experiencing the same type of BM's? My pediatrician tested his BM and found nothing wrong with it, but my mommy instinct is telling me that my newborn should not be having such strong smelling/dark green BM's! Is it the formula that is doing this? Because when he was on Enfamil Lipil he was passing yellow BM's and they were not smelly at all...but my ped. had me switch to Carnation...

What can I do next?

Hi S.,

We tried Good Start with my first son and after 2 feedings he could stink up a room like no one's business! So, we switched to Similac. I don't know that anything was physically wrong, but it was yucky enough for us that we quit using it that day. Unless there's some sort of health issue, I don't think it's that wrong to try out different formulas until you find what agrees with baby.

Good luck!

I certainly think it could be the formula. I have tried 3 different ones for my son and each one has changed his BM significantly. Is it the new good start green can that has the digestive nutrients added? If so I bet that is whats causing it. If your Dr says its fine and it doesnt seem to be bothering him, then whats the harm, other than the smell :)

Yes. Most likely the Good Start. Both my boys were put on this formula to help with digestion issues and the BM's are dark green and much more smelly than with other formulas.

My son tried Carnation for one can. He had gas all the time (and it smelled!), so I went back to Enfamil. Just don't do the store brands. The nutrition looks the same, but the fat and protien make-up is different. It's what Enfamil created for their last generation formula. Not what current research says is best for baby.

I used this formula as well when I had to stop nursing around 5 months. I really loved it and thought it was as easily digested as breastmilk by my son. When he was around 7-8 months my aunt called me very concerned about the use of the b-cultures formula because she read information on it in her monthly medical journal (she has been a head nurse at a VA hospital for many years). The study showed a connection to asthma as well as stating that infants do not have a developed enough digestive system for certain probiotics (b-cultures). It showed that the probiotics or whatever was in the formula stayed in the babies digestive system for many, many years. I must say I didn't read the article and I when trying to research on the internet I could not find anything negative (although all the information I could find was from the companies using it). I do know however my aunt is not an over-reactor and she really felt I should immediately stop the use of that formula and use "regular" formula. I was really bummed because my son had not digested as easily any other sample I had tried with him such as Enfamil, Similac, etc. and I was swearing by the Nestle Good Start B-Cultures formula. I did switch and currently use Kirkland formula (Costco brand). I love it, my son took it easily and now I get twice as much for half the price, without the worry. I'm sorry I can't provide you concrete facts but I just wanted to pass along the information that I had received directly from someone in the medical community. If nothing else there just hasn't been enough research done on the added cultures for infants. Hope that helps you in making your decision.

My son has been on Nestle Good Start Natural cultures for almost a year and his BMs never really had a smeel until recently when he started eating solids. I do feel like it is the best formula cause he has been a very healthy baby.

We are using the same formula on my 3 month old. I mostly breastfeed, but since I've returned to work she get 2 bottles of it. Occasionally her bm are a dark brown. Her bm have always been stinky. The lactation consultants really recommended this formula because of the break down in the milk protein.

My son is on Good Start Soy and he has the same dark green and smelly BMs. My daughter was on enfamil and never had that. My pedi always says unless it's diarrhea or there's blood, baby poop is normal no matter what it looks like! It wouldn't hurt to ask a nurse though if you're concerned.
