My daughter is growing out of her infant car seat that only goes up to 20 pounds.
I am having a hard time picking out her next car seat.
Can anyone recommend one for either up to 40 or 100 pounds?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, we just purchased a Britax Decathlon. We are going to start using it tomorrow and I am very excited.
Even at the store people stopped me to tell me they loved Britax. I choose the Decathlon over the Marathon because of a few features.
Thank you for all of your help!

Hi Lola,

I am just getting ready to buy the next car seat up. My daughter is 8 1/2 months old. I plan on getting the Cosco 3 in 1 carseat for up to 80lbs. This is about 99.00. I have a friend who works at a local police department who stated one of the officers suggested this carseat as being one of the safest made. Hope that helps.

I love the Britx Marathon. It runs about $250. But it is good for up to 65 lbs. It is very easy to install and my baby is always very comfy! I also have a Graco seat that is good for up to 45 lbs. That one is okay, but when my daughter falls asleep her head always falls forward. It doesn't do that in the Britax seat.

If you like the infant carrier look on the side of the carrier mine went to 23 lbs. Most people say 20 but some hold more. Just double check the weight and height. You might be able to use your carrier longer. I LOVE the alph omega at Babies-R-Us!!!! My Daughter fits in it great and sleeps/looks comfortable. I love that it is the last carseat I will ever have to buy. It will fit her until she is ready for the regular seatbelt. I would highly recommend going to babies-r-us and you can take the floor models to your car and try them out see how they fit in your car and how your child fits in them. I also live in Oxford and wanted to go get my installed at the fire dept, we have none close to us that checks them. I went to the Auburn Hills Fire dept since I work in Auburn Hills, they did it wrong. My sitter questiones how he did it and another parent of one of her children she watches. So I went ot the Royal Oak fire dept (I was passing it) he agreed. I would recommend going to the Brandon fire dept if you would like a trained proffesional to install it.

Hi Lola,

We have the Britax Decatholon and LOVE it. We were actually in a head on car crash this past weekend and I was counting our lucky stars that we had this seat. Our baby girl was perfectly safe in this seat. And the bonus is, since the accident was considered "sever" Britax will replace the carseat. We just have to fill out some paperwork and send it and the carseat to them.

One tip I can give you is, you can shop online for these seats. This particular seat runs around $289 retail. I was able to buy it for $219. When they discontinue fabrics, often the online stores will reduce the price significantly. We bought ours from www.bestbuybaby.com. I hightly recommend shopping online. You can often get free shipping and find better deals than if you were to go somewhere like Babies R Us.

Hi Lola -

I love our Cosco Alpha Omega Elite Convertible 3-in-1 Car Seat! We got one for a gift and I liked it so much that I bought a 2nd one for our other car. What I really like about it is that it is adjustable without having to take it out and redo all the straps. There are handles on the side of the headrest that you can use to make it go up or down. It can also be turned around until they are 1 year (and 20lbs, since they have to be both before they can face forward) and it converts up to a booster seat (up to 100lbs). You can get it at Target for about $150.

If you like the britax seats... but dont want to spend that much money.Look at the fisher price car seat. I think you can see it on the fisher price website and is sold at babiesru. the fisherpric seat is made by britax but it is less than 200. I am expecting my second child in 3 months. I will prbably buy the fisher price car seat when the younger baby is ready to move to a bigger seat. We have a graco seat that we got used from a friend.. it is hard to get my 1 year old in the seat and the belts twist up..

This really isn't a recommendation on a car seat. so, I'm sorry I'm hijacking your thread, here. But, there is a common misconception that I've seen time and time again. And, I felt it might be high time to address this in a public forum, to get the word out. While car seats give a weight and height guidline for safe use, these are not hard and fast numbers. I learned this when my son outgrew his infant car seat at 4 months of age. He was only about 15 pounds, and well within the height guidelines too. But, if you read the fine print of the manuals, it also says that the baby is not safe if the top of the car seat is within roughly a hand's width of the top of the baby's head, or if the baby's shoulders come above the top set of holes for the harness straps. My son just happened to have a long enough torso that this was an issue. And he didn't look particularly long either. As the matter of fact, most of the parents of the babies in his playgroup realized that same day that their children outgrew their seats too. One of the kids was only three months old, too. Honestly, if I ever have another child, I'm opting to get one of the convertable car seats right from the start.lol All of the time, I see babies in car seats they are too big for. I'm sure most of us are aware of these facts. But, if it keeps even one baby safer, then this post was worth it.

My son is 14 months now, but he outgrew his carrier months ago, we bought th ebritax boulevard and we LOVE it, he sits perfectly in it, and it's comfortable for him too..which just means he falls asleep easily in it. We travel a lot back and forth to MN, so he spends anywhere between 3 and 6 hours in his seat at a time. I know we spent a small fortune on the seat but I figure it will last him until a booster seat, and we will have it for the next child.

We chose the COSCO Alpha Elite. It grows with your child until they nolonger require a seat. So far, it has been great!

Britax is one of the safest seats around and you pay for the safety. They have them that go up to 100 lbs. I have a daycare mom that did allot of research and just bought her daughter one. It is a awesome seat.

We really like our Britax Roundabout. It is a little expensive, but do some research and you can get it a little cheaper. However, it is worth the money since your child will be in it for a long period of time. We bought a cheaper one (A Graco ComfortSport) for our second car, and the Britax is way better! Good luck!

Highly recommend Britax Marathon or Britax Boulevard! They are pricey but worth every cent for your childs safety. Both of these seats go up to 65 pounds! They say that its best to keep them in a 5 point harness w/latch system as long as possible. I have 2 of the boulevards and 1 marathon. The Boulevard is $30 more than the Marathon. The difference is that the boulevard has side wings, for better side impact protection and the head wings and shoulders move up by the turn of a dial.. Great seat.. Britax has been known to be #1 for child safety, in the eps foam, etc they use.. Look them up. Hope this helps, A.

We have the Britax Roundabout. It is probably the most expensive car seat, but completely worth it. Most importantly, it did the best in car seat safety testing. Overall, it is a very high quality product and it has features like velcro to hook the straps to while you are putting your child in the seat (to keep the straps out of the way while you are strapping them in) and it comes in a lot of cute prints. I have been completely happy with this product and would recommend it to anyone as my #1 choice. L. W

I have an Alpha Omega car seat too, but I don't like it because to latch the child in you have to put the two ends together before putting in them in the lock. This is a pain to do with a wiggling little one, and impossible for someone who is not that familiar with the buckle like grandma and aunts and uncles!

The Britax hands down. I have had several car seats and nothing beats my Britax. I have 2 of them and I think the Marathon (?) is rated up to maybe 65 lbs. The belts don't twist and it's a comfy seat. The only downfall is the size. It's pretty big so depending on you vehicle this may not work. Many places like Toys R Us or Babies R Us will let you try the seat in your car to see if it will be a good fit. WELL worth the money. I think I paid around $200 when I bought mine. I know you want one rated up to 100 lbs but one thing to consider is, will your dtr really want to sit in the seat when she is 100 lbs? My son who is almost 7 (50+ lbs) would no way sit in a car seat. He uses a booster. So, I hope that helps you. Good Luck
