Car Seat Napping - Safe?

Hello-

My now 11 week old has graduated from 'bouncy chair' napping to car seat. I understand some moms do this and doctors recommend it (for acid reflux issues) but am double-checking on the safety of this practice, as I have read articles that the car seat should be used in a car only.

Ideally, this should be the case, but I feel sleep is just as important to her well-being. I do not strap her in while she is napping & feel the incline is similar to a bouncy chair.

She has been going down in her crib for bedtime (graduated from bouncy chair in crib- advice used from previous post :), with the ocassional car seat in crib when she gets super cranky and overtired. She has also been going back down in the crib after her night feedings.

On another note, I've noticed that she sleeps longer in her car seat (sometimes 6-7 hours straight) as opposed to crib (4-5 hours) and am wondering if the car seat provides more comfort & swaddling... if she does wake up, the close confines may help her get back to sleep better. Does anyone have an opinion about this?

Regards, J.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

I appreciate everyone's responses. We've graduated to the pack in play for naptime (as my baby does go down in the crib in the evenings for bedtime). She needs soothing and only sleeps for 30 - 45 minutes, but at least I know she can do it and will hopefully get more comfortable with it as we progress.

My daughter had reflux and slept in her car seat until she was about 8 months. She's pretty tiny. It was the only place she would nap, and a couple times I remember her spending the night in there.
It was perfect, we could just move her from spot to spot in the house. I did buckle the top buckle loosely. I didn't want her to fall out when she got bigger.

if you are going to sleep her in the carseat, you SHOULD strap her in, and you should keep it at the same incline it would be at if it were in the car.

But you also have to think long term, what will you do when she outgrows the carseat?

Hi J.,

If you think she is sleeping longer because of the swaddling effect of the carseat, have you tried actually swaddling? This may be the ticket. I do not recommend that you continue to put her in the carseat for naps, ESPECIALLY if you are not strapping her in. Kids beginning rolling over at this age, and who's to say that she won't stretch or soemthing else and she falls out of the seat. I say try to put her down in the crib, while swaddled. THis might actually work.

Good luck to you. Once I finally decided to try to let my daughter fall asleep on her own in the crib, it took less than 5 minutes and she was out like a light.

Having a child sleep in a car seat is totally safe, BUT strap her in!!! BOTH of my kids did this and they ended up flipping out of their car seats. I do have pics! Also make sure they are on the floor. Put a blanket down and the carseat on top just in case you don't strap her in and she does flip out. Anyway good luck with this.

hi im a first time mom of a 10 month old little girl. im i found that the car seat was my life saver for the first few month of my little ones life she slept in her car seat for naps and at night i tried everything from wraping her in blankets to puttin pillows around her and nothing worked the only thing that worked was the car seat after a few months we were able to start uesing the crib but it took awhile. my little one is just find the only time i would think there would be a prob is when your little one start to roll then it could be un safe well hope this helps

Keep her swaddling blankie snug as a bug in a rug so she feels that security she needs. She's a little young for a bouncie chair.

Have you tried raising one side of her crib mattress. Both my boys slept better that way. My first, now four, slept on an incline for about a year. My second who is 7 months, only slept that way for maybe 3 months. Just sounds like she prefers to be in more of an upright position. Just a thought.

You will be fine, just strap her in! You are close to the age where they will wiggle down and flip out.
My kids have all slept in swings/bouncy seats/car seats for bedtime and naptime until they were able to sleep for the same amount of time flat in a crib..some transitioned earlier than others..my 4 month old still can't lie flat for more than about an hour. She wakes up and is obviously uncomfortable - legs curled up and grunting like sounds, spitting up - and then starts screaming. So all 4 of my kids have done this, no one has back problems or a flat head or any other things you may hear about.
If you have her sleeping through the night in her crib, it sounds like she is ready to transition to naps in the crib. You will know when she is ready.

My 3rd slept in her carseat for months. She was able to sleep through the night starting at about 1 month because of it. We just put the seat in her bed. I asked my ped about it once and he suggested maybe putting her crib at an incline. But she was using a pack and play so that wasn't a possibility and we didn't think it was the angle that was making a difference. Now, since then I have read that one of the reasons for not wanting to do that is because a baby's oxygen saturation can drop from being in that position too long. If you were to go to a carseat board you would probably be able to find out more info. I wish I could give you more details but I don't want to pretend to know more than I do. I do sympathize though. Good luck.

I too am guilty of raising car seat, bouncy chair and swing sleeping babies. I always had the car seat on the floor and the baby strapped in. I guess I never put either of my sons in the seat to sleep but if we came in and the baby was still sleeping, I'd live him there. (He was strapped in, obviously.) I would loosen or remove the blanket b/c my baby would get very hot. I also always turned on the ceiling fan in their rooms to help with air circ. (I do that for the baby now even though he's in the crib as I read that this helps move "stale" air and reduces the risk the baby will reinhale exhaled air. Make sense?)
