I've been trying to remember a favorite book of mine from my childhood. I was probably about 6-9 years old, which would have made it 1983-85 or so. The main charater is a little girl named Poppy. She has a very large family and everyone is named after something in nature. Poppy finds a kitten (which she is not supposed to keep) and her and a friend make a home for it under the back step, but keep it a secret.
At the end, I think the family moves to a bigger house and she is able to keep it.

I don't know, but why not google "poppy and her kitten" and a bunch of stuff will come up. I did, but not sure which book you are referring to. Hope you find it, I know it is a treasure when you find your favorite kid book.
