I received this very cute outfit for my little girl as a gift. The only problem is that it smells like sulfur. It is brand new (I took the tags off). I have laundred it several times with our Melaleuca laundry detergent and also used vinegar. I have looked online for solutions but can't seem to find anything. Please send any suggestion. I would like to use this outfit for her 6 month pics which are next week. Thanks in advance!

What can I do next?

Several times I have had clothes that have had smells that I could not remove until I washed them and hung them outside to air dry. The combination of sun and fresh air removed the smells.

Good Luck,

If it's brand new and smells like sulfur despite being laundered several times, I would be very concerned as to what kind of chemicals were in or on the fabric. I sure wouldn't want it against my baby's skin. My two cent's worth: throw it out. There are lots of cute outfits out there.

M.,
I would suggest putting a capful of Sol-u-mel in when you wash it. I see other people suggested it too. Or spraying with solumel and letting it sit for awhile before you wash it. I don't know how Melamagic works if you could use that for heavy dity cleaning. Let me know if you find something that works!

Have you tried putting it outside in the sun for a day? Or you could try filling a shoebox with baking soda and placing the garment on top, put the lid on and wait a few days to see if that removes the smell.
People will probably tell you that you are not using your Melaleuca products correctly but the fact is, they are not the miracle products they are marketed to be. Don't get me wrong, I love some of their products but again....no miracle!

Whatever you do DO NOT USE OXY-CLEAN!!! There is a chemical in Oxy-cleant hat will burn a hole right through cement, but they dowse it with 60% soda ash. It takes 16 rinse cycles to rinse the chemicals out!!! That's the worse thing to use on clothing especially your babies! Our skin is the largest organ of our bodies. And baby's skin is more porous than adult skin which means that their skin absorbs things more than adults. That's why cancer is the leading killer in children.

I know this because my husband drove Hazmat truck, & Oxy-clean was his largest account. I wouldn't use their product if my life depended on it.

Try leaving it outside to air out. Some clothes have formaldyhyde in them to keep their shape or for stain resistance. It smells like sulfer. You might not be able to get the smell out. It all depends on how much formaldehyde is in the material. Or the chemicla they used to make the material.

That's weird! Vinegar usually works! Maybe try baking soda. And lots of fabric softener. I wonder why it smells like that? That's not a good smell for a baby either, it's like having a constant poopy diaper, I suppose. If that doesn't work, you could always just use it for pictures and then never have her wear it again.

Solumel! I love Melaleuca. They may not be Miracle products but they are safe for your home and family and they work wonderfully. :)

Try soaking the outfit overnight in water/Oxy Clean solution. This works well, and takes out most smells/stains on my kids clothes!

If worse comes to worse, and none of these ideas work to get the smell out try taking it back to the store to exchange for a different one.

OR - just put it on her right before the pictures, and chenge her into something else right after (so no-one has to tolerate the smell long, - you or the baby)....you can't smell it in the pictures, and then you will have a nice memory of her in it, even if she is not able to wear it again!

Good Luck

Jessie

Hi,
Have you tried adding 20 mule team borax to your wash? You use it with your detergent and it is a booster. I have also used the Febreeze laundry odor remover in my wash. I have used it with my regular detergent and sometimes have used it even when I have already added the borax. I have never tried to get out a sulfur smell but my husband comes home with very smelly work clothes! Good luck!

let it hang outside all day in the sun. I say it time and time again, the sun is a miracle worker.. It doesnt cost anything so it's easy to always give it a shot, if it doesnt work then you are not out anything.
