I have a memory foam mattress and I want to protect it from accidents, you know diaper leaks, potty training, etc. I bought one at Target and it just makes me sweat. I thought it was because it had gotten warmer, but I had the window open last night and I still woke up in several puddles.
Have any of you found one that works great, I can wash if I need to, and that doesn't make you sweat because you are lying on plastic? I bought the microfiber topped one by the way.

We have Dri - Tec. It was very expensive but worth it. We love the thin jersey sheets and can feel the plastic ones through the sheets. It keeps out dust mites, allergens, and fluids. It is washable and doesn't make us sweat.

Just a sheet between you and the plastic doesn't help.
It's like your body heat is reflected back at you, you over heat, and sweat something awful.

I use an old wool army blanket that I've washed and lanolized. It works really well for keeping moisture off the mattress, and it's not hot or scratchy under the sheets.
Just to make sure, you are using the sheet over it, right? I have a tempurpedic mattress that my husband bought, and I think he forgot to order the cover. When my son started sleeping with me, I got this cover from bed bath and beyond that wasn't technically waterproof, but it was kind of padded and had silver in it so it is supposedly anti microbial. We have had a few accidents with leaky diapers and spilled water, and I've got to say, the liquid never penetrated to the mattress. However, it might not hold up to a full on bed wetting during potty training. It was about $70 and it is very comfortable. The worst thing about memory foam is how hot it gets, but this keeps the mattress cooler. If you are interested, let me know, and tomorrow I will dig under the sheets and see if I can find the tag to tell you what brand it is.
My office mate told me that if you DON'T use a waterproof cover, it voids the warranty on memory foam mattresses.
The mattress cover goes under your sheets...you aren't supposed to be laying on it. Theoretically, you shouldn't be laying on plastic, no matter what kind you use. I have a very thick plastic cover around my mattress, then a very thick cotton cover, and THEN my sheets.
Personally, the thicker the plastic, the better I like it. Not just for preventing accidents, but these are actually a wonder at preventing dust mites, etc, from making a home in your mattress because it protects your mattress from body oils, sweat, etc. I honestly had a vacuum salesman ask if he could vacuum my mattress once...he was so sure that was going to be his winning ploy...and he came up with nothing.
I understand about laying on plastic. Nearly all mattress protectors are lined in plastic and they do cause me to be hot. However, when I bought my last mattress the store showed me a knit cover that does not have a plastic backing. It has elastic all the way around and stays wonderfully on the mattress. No need to keep adjusting it as I've had to do with regular protectors. This was a store such as American Mattress. I don't know if it was that one and I can't think of other store names.
My daughter and her husband just bought a memory foam mattress. The mattress store also sold them the same sort of protector. The knit fabric has a rubberized feeling backing that gives with the knit. All of us have found these to be comfortable and without the heat that a plastic backed protector causes. And it's kept my mattress as clean as new in appearance.
This mattress protector, I bought, was somewhere around $60 for a double bed size. It's expensive but very much worth it.
BTW Microfiber is a form of polyester, I think, and is hot in its self, too.
