Can You Have a False Positive on a Pregnancy Test?

I thought the answer was NO b/c HCG is only made during pregnancy but last night I had an almost complete pink line but this morning it was a definite no line. What's up with that? I am not on any hormone related drugs. Should I just make an appt to get a blood test done tomorrow?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

I did an EPT test tonight and it was definitely negative. I'll do one more in the a.m. and if it is still negative I'll probably just call it "user failure" and leave it at that. I'm due to start soon anyway.

The uncertainty is about to kill me. ; )

Monday a.m.: still a negative on a new test. I'll wait a few more days to see if I start. Thanks for your advice!

Yes, make the appointment - ot just wait to see if you miss your period. It should be due soon, right? You are right, there should be no such thing as a false +, whereas false negatives are pretty common. Good luck.

A chemical pregnancy occurs when you take a test, get a positive reading, then hours or days later, take another test and get a negative response, or start your period. This happens when an egg is fertilized but fails to implant in your uterus. Hope this isn't the case with you!

I had the same problem 6 months ago when a preg. test I did came back positive and I ended up NOT being pregnate. I freaked out on the post. test, I was not ready to have another child. I did a blood test through my doc and while i was waiting to get my results back I did a few more test which all came back neg. So if you have done anymore and they are all neg. more than likley you are not pregnate. Hope this helps!!

Maybe you got a bad test...and if I were you I would just get another test. If the second one is for sure negative, then wait out your period a little longer before the trip to the doctors office.
Good luck and let us know your outcome.

I took 2 test that were all negative but really was positive. I think the batch I bought from was not good. Go to the DR. for a real test!!!!

M.,
If I am not mistaken, you can half a false reading on a pregnancy test if the test is expired. Double check the packaging before purchasing to make sure that the test you take is not out of date. To be safe, I would take one more test and see what the outcome is. If you are still not positive or not comfortable with the outcome, then go to the doctor.

Okay, did you pee on the stick at 7pm and it was bright pink and you were giddy with excitement, only to look at the same stick again at 7am and see it had faded to nothing? is this the case? if so yes you are pregnant. If not, please schedule a blood test with the doctor, you can spend hundreds of dollars on urine tests, or get an absolute answer from the doc with a blood test. Good Luck!

I have a ??? You say you're due to start in a few days, so you actually haven't even missed your period yet. There are only a couple over the counter tests out there that can actually predict such a low level of HCG hormone for up to 5 days before your missed period, so my ?? is was the test you took first an early detection preg. test, then possibly the others were not? It's very rare to get a false positive unless something was wrong with that test. The test has to detect HCG hormone, like you know-is only produced if you are pregnant. One poster put you could get a false-positive b/c she had one but was only preg. with a blighted ovum, well a blighted ovum is in a sense a pregnancy, your body responds to it as one, and normally you have to have a DNC to remove it just like a normal miscarraige(I did). False-negatives however, are more common due to the levels of concentration. If you miss your period, then take the test. If you are trying to get pregnant, and just want to know-ask your Dr. for a blood test if you like-they are the most reliable. Good Luck :-)

You can have a false positive. I had a positive at home test, though it was a very faint line. In my case it was a blighted ovum,an empty egg sac. This is where a egg just stops growing. I was told it was natures way of taking care of eggs that may have been abnormal or something. Anyway,at my first Dr. office visit,he also thought I was pregnant. The next month he found out it had been a blighted ovum. My levels weren't high enough and he could tell my utereus wasn't the size it should be. So,I would go to the Dr. if you don't start soon. Hope this helps. Good luck.

I recently had two tests with very faint lines. Then three that said NO...So I went to the doctor, the next day, thinking maybe it was just very early on. My blood work came back negative, so I am startign to think either I got a bad test or something else happened.
