I had the mirena inserted 3 1/2 years ago after i had my youngest daughter. Since then i have noticed that my mood swings where starting to intense. And now its like at least 2 to 3 times a week i will have a mood swing, start crying and just come close to completely having a break down. Its starting to get to the point where they are interfering with my relationship so if any of you have any idea what is goin on please let me know.

Thanks abunches,

K. B

Absolutely.

Mirena, just like pills/patches/rings/shots/implants are all hormon based.

Hormones have a number of functions in the body, and they have a number of side effects.

Because our neurochemistry is all different, or cognitive emotional reactions to chemicals (including hormones) ALL vary, but usuall in similar ways.

For MOST people hormones affect mood (and several other things / aka common side effects. But as far as mood certain hotmones usually trugger certain mood effects in MOST people. Oxytocin, is a hormone, that is linked to "bonding" emotions in MOST people. Estrogen & Progrsterone are linked more toward "crankiness" in MOST people.)

For MOST people, the lower the hormone level, the less it causes side effects.

What's up with my caps lock on MOST?

In SOME, birth control hormones trigger uncontrollable rages and even delusions (PMDD). In SOME, birth control hormones trigger suical despair. In SOME birth control hormones trigger euphoria. In SOME, they equalize mood swings that exist without them. In SOME they trigger sex drive. In SOME they trigger gynecological cancers.

In SOME, lower levels of hormones trigger the above, but higher levels don't trigger a durn thing. (In MOST, remember, its the opposite; Lower levels, or localized levels... Like with IUD or Ring... Cause fewer side effects than pills or shots).

MOST v SOME

It sounds like you're in a "some" category.
As in, you either respond badly to lower levels, or you respond badly to local levels, or the pregnancy changed your neurochemistry & you can't tolerate BC hormones at all.

PLEASE get your mirena removed. Trust your instincts. If you are asking this question, I am guessing that you know the answer.

If you choose to get it out, continue to trust yourself even if you are told by medical professionals that it cannot be the cause of your troubles. Start with removal, give it a little time, and if you are still experiencing severe mood swings, see a doctor.

I know that for many women, Mirena is a mild, useful thing. And for others, it can be an absolute nightmare.

I haven't used mirena, but I had to get off birth control pills because the hormones in them (like the hormones in Mirena) were making my moods horrible.

It could be yes. Or it could be a body chem change since your pregnancy. Since the pregnancy with my first I've been a cry at the drop of a hat kind of person. I didn't have the mirena then but that pregnancy hormone imbalance stuck with me. How has your stress level been? if you've had a lot going on it may be that. I wouldn't get it taken out. it's only another 18 months till it's time for it to actually come out. Examine what's going on around you before you take it out. You may also have PPD. Mood swings come along with it.

Yes it can. I'd have it removed and get the copper one without the hormones.

I have never done Mirena, but I cannot tolerate any hormonal forms of BC. So . . . it would not surprise me if Mirena causes issues for you. Maybe your doc could make other suggestions?

I have many friends who have had the Mirena. After about a year, all but one have had problems severe enough to get it removed. Mood swings were a common complaint. Have it removed.
