Can I Correct Her Speech?

My daughter is 4 1/2 and will be attending Kindergarten in the fall. She does not say her R's (uses a W), J's (DZ), or SH's (S). Is there a way to correct this? Will it correct itself? Are there excercises you know of? Is there someone in schools who can help me with it? Her name starts with an R and no one understands when she tells them what it is. I'd like to take care of it soon, her younger sister is following suit.

What can I do next?

The experts don't expect R's as early as they used to, so don't stress that one. The others you need to teach them how to use their mouth to form the sound and then it's pretty much just repetition and reinforcement. My son had to go to speech classes in Kindergarten. Most schools have a program. That's basically what they did. He's now in 3rd grade and doing well.

My son had the same problem at the same age. He is almost done with kindergarten and it is getting better. I'm pretty sure your daughter is probably going to grow out of it and it will help to have the example of the other kids in school to follow.

I did have him checked and follow ups with the speech people through jordan district. They said he had problems that many kids his age have and they usually do grow out of it. Some just develop slower than others. Good luck.

My older daughter had the same problem. There are speech therapists at the schools. They may wait until she is actually in first grade before they do anything. Sometimes this works itself out. If they think it's severe enough they will have her go in kindergarten. You don't have to worry about paying or anything. They will set up a schedule and pick her up out of class then take her back.

Hi L.,

I would immediately contact the school and the local health department to start your daughter in a speech therapy program. She will probably be pulled out of her normal class for about an hour a day while she is in school to continue the therapy. For your younger children the local department of health usually offers developmental screenings, which can identify problems sooner and start the resolution sooner. Like immunizations the rule of thumb is 1 screening before 2 years old.

If you are in the SLC area I've listed below some infto for Jordan Child Development Center.

My brother was in speech therapy as a child and is very normal and very successful in his career today. So don't get too blue, just get her the help and support her in all the ways a great mom like you can.

Kind Regards,

You need to get her to a speech therapist and fast, your local public school has one and can recommend one also.

Children can be very cruel to someone with a speech impediment, they just tend to make fun of what they don't understand.
