Can Dogs Suffer from Allergies?

My dog has allergies. They can have the same allergies humans have. Definitely see a vet and see what medicine they recommend/ prescribe. They were able to give my dog some human allergy medicine that we cut in half for her and it helps her a lot.

Yes they can. Our chocolate lab displays allergies in the spring and summer . I asked the vet about what I can give him and she authorized the generic equivalent of Claritin. We get it at Costco and all of us (people, dogs) take it when our allergies start up in the spring. I would not give anyone -- canine or human -- benedryl before checking with medical authority. It can be very potent to humans, and I don't know what it might do to dogs. Do NOT give a dog ibuprofen (spelling?) either. It is a poison for dogs. We found out the hard way -- he was taking aspirin for aches and pains. When we ran out of aspirin, we used ibuprofen. Bad mistake. Made him very ill. Vet had to prescribe another medication to counteract the effects of the ibuprofen.

Oh, yes...animals suffer from them too!
Sometimes it is food, but I find that usually it is environmental.
My cats take allergy meds as needed, and I suspect my dog will need some too.
Talk to your vet...it's going to be fine! ;)

Definitley. Dogs have allergies just like humans do. There are many different allergy medications that can be used in animals. Since we have different plants and trees in California than Texas, you may have to give him antihistamines during different seasons. If it gets to a point that he is really bad and antihistamines don't seem to relieve his symptoms, you can do allergy testing on him to find out which plants, trees and foods he is allergic to. We had to do this with my dog and found he was allergic to the cedar in his bed and the pig ears he was getting as treats. Big difference once we got rid of those things. Beaux may be allergic to a tree blooming in your yard/neighborhood because tree pollen in really high right now. (weeds and mold is low to none right now) Funny thing is that just as humans can be allergic to dogs, some dogs can be allergic to humans too. The vet can help you to determine which allergy medication will be best for Beaux. Good Luck! Hope he feels better soon.

Dog can have allergies. I'm an RVT (an RN in the veterinary world). I would take him to the vet before you give anything. He could also have a respiratory infection and whatever the cause you want to make sure he hasn't scratched his cornea from rubbing. They have antihistamines they can RX as well. But have him checked. Benedryl alone might not take care of it if an infection is involved and won't help any painful trama to the eyes.

Yes, take your dog to the vet to find out whether the allergies are to something in the air (pollen, etc.), grass, or a food allergy (yes, dogs get those to - even to things you wouldn't expect, like beef!). You should also be sure to rule out the possibility that he has a foxtail lodged in his nose (though this is not the season for them, yet).

Yes, dogs can suffer from allergies. My sister has a Chow with allergies. They take their dogs to the San Jose Spay amd Neuter clinic (he does more than just spaying and neutering)He is wonderful and cheaper than other places too. Give them a try.

Yes, dogs can have allergies. They can be allergic to grasses and other environmental things or to certain ingredients in their food, like wheat gluten, brewers yeast, or corn meal. Your vet will hve some specific advice for you, however I have been told that Benedryl for people is safe for dogs. If you go to Dogster or another dog resource website you can find out what the dosage per pound is for dogs in one of their forums. Sorry, I have forgotten! Good Luck!

Dogs can get allergies. My golden has skin allergies that got really bad a few years ago. You can give your dog benedryl but you should ask your vet what the correct dose would be.

If the benedryl does not help and the allergies are bad you may want to look into a vet that specializes in allergies. Mine is located in Redwood City. I now give my dog a weekly allergy shot and it works great.
