We have the Homedics SoundSpa Lullaby Sound Machine and we love it. It is very small - so it's not an elephant in the room and can be placed on a shelf, dresser, etc! It doesn't have specific "white noise" so we use either the ocean or rain sound. It also has a projection light that is really cool. I've seen it at Bed, Bath & Beyond for $20 - and with those coupons we all get in the mail the price would be great. Good luck!

I don't know if you saw it, but there was a similar question from Laura B on Sat Jan 3 - she got 43 responses. Here is my response:

Like you, I couldn't find a decent one in the stores so I looked online and found one for $30. It's brand name is Obus Forme and it has 20 different settings from nature sounds to white noise, has a volume control and has an automatic off or not setting. It's great - I have three small children and they were always waking each other up. Here is a link but maybe if you do a search you can find a better price? http://www.soundtherapyworld.com/Obus_Forme_p/obus1.htm

get a air purifier. it makes white noise and it will help keep the air clean. the baby may also wake up if he is getting teeth. give the baby some baby tylenol and teething tablets and put the air purifier on. i am surprised the creaky floors did not wake the other two children up.

I have a good one from Bed Bath and Beyond. I am not sure of the brand but it has different sounds (heartbeat, rain, ocean, waterfall, and maybe 1 other). It can play all the time (which is what mine does) or it can be set to go off after so long, I think intervals of 30 minutes. It was around $20. It is great because you can put batteries in it and use it anywhere. I have a friend whose kid hated the car so she would put in beside the car seat and he would go right to sleep. I take mine with me anytime my son is going to be sleeping. It is a comfort and drowns out noises. It is small and roundish. Sorry I can't tell you the name brand, my son is asleep now in the room with it =)

I use the same machine recommended by Lauren - the Sound Sleeper by Dex. I have used it with my son for almost 3 years and my daughter, who is 15 months now has one as well. It has different noise settings and is very soothing in addition to blocking out noise.

I have found that a small fan that i purchased at Target for less than $15 is MUCH more effective at blocking out the noise than the white noise maker we have!!

I have always used the Sound Sleeper with my daughter (now 19 months old) and have had great success with the rain setting. You can adjust the volume and it will stay on all night...or you can put it on the timer mode which shuts off after a 20 or so minutes. We recently did some work in our house, so during this time, I also added an air purifier to my daughter's room...the fan's noise just added an extra sound cover and she napped through everything! Good luck!

Hi,

We had the same problem for quite awhile!! We just used a regular standing fan for white noise. I know that sometimes you don't want a breeze on the baby, but it does not need to be pointed directly at him. It also helps circulate air in the room and I always liked a fan for that reason. There is also the plus that you can turn it up or down depending on how loud you need it to be.

Good luck!
