M.L. asks from East Stroudsburg, PA on March 29, 2007
Can Anyone Recommend a Good OBGYN in the East Stroudsburg, PA Area?
When I gave birth to my son 3 years ago, we lived in New Jersey, but we've since moved to the East Stroudsburg area and I just found out I'm a few weeks pregnant and we're very excited.
My concern is, now that I've been asking moms their advice about finding a great OB in the area, some are suggesting I stay with my doc in NJ (and arranging for less visits, that is if my pregnancy is a normal, healthy one)! Is the quality of care here that bad?!
Can anyone share their experience with birthing here in the Pocono area? Or if you chose to keep a doctor in another state? I also may consider going with an OB and a midwife since I've only heard great experiences with both. Any feedback you can provide would be helpful. Thanks ladies!

So What Happened?™
I made an appointment to meet with the midwives that deliver out of Hackettstown Regional Medical (since it's closer to my home and I drive to NJ twice a week, it seemed the better option). I'm very excited and I'll keep you posted. But if anyone can give me more input about their experiences with this hospital, I'd greatly appreciate it!

I use Pocono Midwives and Andrea and her staff are awesome! She delviers at st Lukes which has and awesome NICU which I had to use and there Perinatal Center is great to if needed, that ANdrea sends you to for any problems. Andrea gives you great care and uses a great hospital! She doesn't just show up to deliver she was with me the entire time even when the perinatalgist wanted to take over she was there and was great!! I have heard that Dr Miller is good but can't say that I would know from experience. Most people I know go down to the Bethlehem/Allentown area and Andrea is the only one I know up here that delivers down there. Good luck!

If I could have stayed with my dr. in Jersey I would have also. But I couldn't so I was much in the same predicament as you are. I wound up going to a dr. in Bethlehem... Almost all the way down Rt. 33. Caring for Women. There are two doctors there, Dr. Burgey and Dr. Lamb, and by the time I was ready to have my c-section, I didn't care which doctor I had. They are both great! And their staff is just awesome. It was worth the drive. I also went to St. Luke's... great place. Great nurses, oh, and private rooms too. :-)

Hi! I highly recommend Andrea MacClaren of Pocono Midwives. She is located on 611 in Stroudsburg. She delivered my twins and she was amazing. We beat all the odds and I delivered them naturally. She was always there to help and I felt that when I called she knew exactly who I was. I didn't feel like, "just another patient". She delivers at St. Lukes in Bethlehem which is a wonderful hospital. My whole pregnacy through delivery was amazing and I very highly recommend her. Thanks :) C. - 32 year old mother of 2 1/2 year old identical twin girls

I used Pocono OB/GYN, and with the exception of Dr. Sam. I know someone here said she was great, but she really dropped the ball with me and it almost ended very badly. She also blew my mom off after a hysterectomy when my mom said she was having pain, and it turned out she had a bowel infection. So I wont let her anywhere near me if I have another baby. Dr. Miller, on the other hand, is literally a life-saver. She's an extraordinary doctor. I also loved Dr. Lawrence. The others I liked well enough, but those two were my favorites. In the end, strangers delivered my baby because I had to be sent to Lehigh Valley, but I have faith that anyone except Dr. Sam could have done a great job.
I also hear really great things about Pocono Midwives if you prefer to go that route.

M.,
I am in a very similar situation. I moved to East Stroudsburg 7 months pregnant, and decided to keep my OB and hospital in Nj, since I was so far along. I am 32 weeks right now with the next one, and am delivering here.
I have spoken to a lot of Moms now, and have gotten mixed reviews about Pocono Medical Center as a delivery hsopital. Those who have had no problems or complications were satisfied with their experience, but those who have required any additional care haven't been. Specifically, NICU facilities aren't great, and I know a few Moms whose babies have been Medevac'ed out of Pocono to better NICU facilities, but they don't move the Mom, so you are at one hospital while your baby is in another.
I decided that since the hospital the Medevac to from here is usually St. Luke's, I'd just go there to begin with. St. Luke's has a hospital in Allentown and in Bethlehem. It is about an hour to get there, so know that in advance. But the facilities are first-rate, and the place is really nice. I use a practice called St. Luke's OB/GYN for my pre-natal care, and have been happy with them. You see the nurse practitioner there for most appointments, and she is really nice. They have an office in Wind Gap, so you can do most of your stuff there, which is a lot closer that Bethlehem is. They also work closely with St. Luke's Perinatal Center, so if you had any risk issues, like high blood pressure, or gestational diabetes, you can see the high risk doc in the same Wind Gap office building.
Other great hospitals around the area are Lehigh Valley Medical Center, Moses Taylor up in Scranton, and Community Medical Center in Scranton. The two Scranton ones are specifically known for L&D and NICU. If you decidewhich hospital you want to use, they typically have a list on their website of doctors that are affiliated withg them. Then you can pick a doc from that list, compare to your insurance list, and narrow down that way.

M.,
I also use St. Luke's OBGYN and they are fantastic. I go to the Wind gap office since it's closer to Stroudsburg. I delivered my son at St. Luke's in Bethlehem and couldn't have been happier!

Hi M.,
Congratulations & Welcome!
I have two cuties - a 2 1/2 yr old boy and a 10 month old girl.
I used Pocono OBGYN (Dr Marybeth Miller delivered both)and had them at Pocono Medical Center.
...Pocono has a really bad reputation - mostly because they earned it - I can say from personal experience that the ER is awful...BUT the maternity floor is really wonderful - the nurses, the doctors, the techs, the rooms, the food - I thought everything was great & I've never heard anything but good things from other mothers too. I have to say, my experiences were both excellent.
Another option - two of my best friends just delivered their babies at St Lukes & both of them were very happy with their experiences...Their doctors worked out of Wind Gap, I can't remember the name - sorry.
Hope this helps and good luck with everything!
