Can 7 1/2 Months Old Eat Rice?

Hi Moms,

My daughter is 7 1/2 months old and she has been having rice / oatmeal cereal mixed with puree veggies or fruit. I have always been giving her Earth's Best cereal.

Yesterday I moved her to normal rice which we normally eat during dinner. I add this with the puree veggie / fruits and formula. My Nanny was commenting that she might be too young to digest the rice. Is she too young?

NO. Babies are not supposed to have regular food until 12 months old. Stick with the rice cereal. Regular rice also does not have any nutritional value. The rice cereal has vitamins and such mixed in.

Of course she can. You don't have to buy the pre-processed stuff. Babies have been around a lot longer than industrial food.

If it's coming out whole in her stool, you might overcook it for her and smash it up before you feed her.

Hello CL: Rice is one of the few universal foods that is found in many cultures. Having lived over seas I can tell you that children as young as 4 months are given rice water, rice that looks like oatmeal when its cooked, plain sticky rice (which they love because it is great as finger food), and a sweet rice called cocnut rice(served with mango is heavenly). My Thi and Mexican friends have always fed their children rice as well when young.
When a child is ill a doctor will often tell parents to have them eat Rice. So I believe from my experiances that your child will be just fine.
I have always fed our children whatever we were eatting from the table because I knew if I cooked it I didn't have to worry about how it was prepared. Have fun with your little one and enjoy the adventure of parenthood. Nana G

When I started solids with my daughter at about 6 1/2 months, I never used the baby rice cereals. I simply cooked brown rice into a porridge and blended in a food processor. My daughter did fine on that mixed with her pureed fruits. Of course all babies' digestion vary...but I think rice should be pretty mild for this age. You may need to be more concerned with the consistency. A whole rice grain might be harder to digest than if it was cooked longer and/or pureed.

As long as the rice is nice and soft, don't worry about it. My little one also enjoyed soft cooked or pureed: Barley, oatmeal, quinoa, and brown rice. Go for it! If you over do the rice she may get constipated, so keep an eye on her poops. Have fun!

Rice is the first recommended cereal for babies because it's been found to be the least likely to cause allergic reactions. The only concern would be if she can't handle the texture, and you can mush it up to take care of that problem.

My son LOOOOOVED rice when he first got a taste of it. Just be prepared for a lot of clean up on your part. He insisted on feeding himself after a few minutes and got it all over his face, his ear, in his nose and ears, on the floor, on his arms. Everywhere! It was hilarious.

babies actually cannot digest any grains until about one year, when they get their first molars. their little intestines don't develop the enzymes needed to digest grains until 1 year! which means all that rice cereal is basically a waste of space in their little bellies. i do not understand why it considered a common first food because it is not healthy and does not give them any nutriants. you can find lots of information about feeding children and raising healthy and wise families at this website: http://www.westonaprice.org/ check out the website, you'll be glad that you did. i am so thankful to the friend who introduced me to it.

there's no need to feed babies grain when there are so many fruits and veggies available to eat. egg yolk is also a great option. i guess the problem is that fruits and veggies don't advertise...

best of luck!
good

If you were going to do any grains i thing rice would be the one most likely to not cause an allergic reaction like other grains so. Whit rice already had the bran removed- it should break down easily.

Give your pediatrician or advice nurse a quick call, just to ease your mind. I think it's just fine - both of my kids had whole rice (brown & white) very early - certainly by 7.5 months. We eat a lot of rice too. :)

Of course she can. Do not believe posts that claim babies can't digest grains without SCIENTIFIC (WITH APPROPRIATE REFERENCES) evidence. Websites that are not scientifically valid do not count as standardly accepted scientific knowledge. Please someone show me the peer reviewed study that documents that grains are not digestable by babies under 12 months? Anyone? Does the rice come out whole in the poop? No, then its digested. Otherwise, I am not sure where the poster thinks it goes, maybe the rice fairy?Digested is a fancy world for broken down into smaller parts. Even things that are not COMPLETELY broken down may be partly broken down.
OMG, by 10 months my child was pretty much eating everything my husband and i were (and LOVING it and PUTTING ON healthy WEIGHT and GROWING that she wasn't when just on fruits and breast milk). She started rice cereal and baby food at around 5 months.
Sorry for the rant, but it seems that posting strange random stuff as fact without so much as a VALID reference or any scientific evidence has become really popular with many mommies.
BTW, brown rice is more nutritional but to say that white rice has NO nutritional value is plain wrong- I wonder what billions of Chinese people would say to that?
