We plan on camping lots this summer and I would like to get some new ideas for camping meals. We are very basic campers. We use tents and cook over the fire. Also, we have two meat eaters and two vegetarians so all receipes are welcome.
Thanks ahead of time,
Tam

Thanks so much for all the great ideas. I espcecially loved the wrapping the biscuit around a stick and cooking over the fire. Also, the omelets boiled in the zip locks. Can't wait to use all the receipes.

My friends have a dutch oven business and their website has links to many other recipe sites other than their own. It is chuckwagonsupply.com and full of great camping recipe ideas. Also for treats we like banana boats where you keep a banana in the peel, slice it not quite all the way through length wise, stuff it with chocolate chips and mini marshmallows, wrap in tinfoil and put it in the fire for a little while. We also make orange cakes for breakfast by cutting the top off an orange and scooping out the inside (save to eat as a side), fill it with muffin mix and wrap with foil and put in fire. Good luck and have fun!

This is a really fun and easy treat we do when we go camping:

Homemade Ice Cream, while sitting around the fire!

You need a quart and a gallon size bag for each
person (the slider bags don't work as well as they leak so buy the ones
that seal all the way across). In the quart baggie add 1/2 cup of half and
half and 1/4 cup of milk, 1 tsp vanilla, 1 TB sugar. Seal the bag. Place
the baggie in the larger baggie and add 3 TB of rock or kosher salt and 2
cups of ice cubes. Seal shut and then start shaking the bags. Within about
10 minutes you have ice cream. You can add any flavors to the bags that you want before and you will have flavored icecream. We ate them right out of the bag.

You and your kids will love this!
Here's a site with some pics: http://thecookingcritic.com/2006/06/29/ziploc-omelets-giv...
ZIPLOC OMELET

(This works great!!! Good for when all your family is together. The best part is that no one has to wait for their special omelet!!!) Have guests write their name on a quart-size Ziploc freezer bag with permanent marker.
Crack 2 eggs (large or extra-large) into the bag (not more than 2) shake to combine them.
Put out a variety of ingredients such as: cheeses, ham, onion, green pepper, tomato, hash browns, salsa, etc.
Each guest adds prepared ingredients of choice to their bag and shake.
Make sure to get the air out of the bag and zip it up.
Place the bags into rolling, boiling water for exactly 13 minutes. You can usually cook 6-8 omelets in a large pot. For more, make another pot of boiling water.
Open the bags and the omelet will roll out easily. Be prepared for everyone to be amazed.
Everyone gets involved in the process and it’s a great conversation piece.

http://www.scoutorama.com/recipe/ has tons of camping recipes. My dad is a vegitarian too and we always used veggie burgers or frozen eggplant meatballs as a meat substitute whenever we went camping. The preformed frozen Boca Burgers hold together really well and work great.

Hey our all time favorite meal is as follows:

Need:
1 can your favorite chili (could be vegetarian!)
1 "hobo" dinner made to order (onion, hamburger, potatoes, carrots, seasonings, broccoli, etc)
Cheese, grated and frozen (in that order!)
1 pie tin per person, equipped with spoon and fork!

Cook your hobo dinner till the potato is cooked and the hamburger is too. You can cook your chili in the cans (this does release some metals into the meal, but you need metals in your diet anyway) or in a separate camping pot. When all is done, you pour your hobo dinner in the pie tin, then cover with chili and cheese. Completely yummy, but looks a bit like dog food! We enjoy this meal EVERY time we go camping. Just like you do, tents, cook on the fire. Nothing fancy. All the fancy and entertainment we need is contained in nature! Enjoy!

You might also want to check out kraftfoods.com for recipes. Anything that you can grill in tin foil, you can cook in a fire. I get the kraft foods magazine. It is free, you might want to try it too. You don't get one each month, but that is part of the reason why I like it! There are only 4 per year!

hi. i just went camping this weekend with my hubby and our twin (boys) 3-year-olds. we had foil dinners...best way to look those up was do a search for "hobo dinners." cooks.com has some good camping recipes. tip: if you're going to do foil cooking, it helps to have shredded foods inside as they cook more proportionately with the meat. we had lean ground beef, shredded hashbrowns (used again at b'fast), shredded carrots, and onion. (dump cream of "your chioce" soup over the food before wrapping in foil, moistens). we also took along some spices and worchestershire for flavoring. was REALLY yummy. would eat it any night for dinner. =) good luck and happy camping.

I haven't tried this, but I've heard that you can buy a Papa Murphy's take and bake pizza and fold in in half, wrap it in foil, and cook it over the fire. It makes a really big calzone.

Anything you eat normally! Make it before hand and warm it up over the campfire or cooking stove. (we have done spaghetti, just put it in a gallon ziploc) we have done burritos, just make them before you leave the house, and wrap them individually in foil so they don't fall apart when warmed up or eaten. You can rewarm pancakes for breakfast, you can take eggs already scrambled and just warm them up, pretty much anything you normally eat is great for camping.

Dutch ovens are the greatest for camping. Especially for the basic camper. Go on-line and there are multitudes of sites for receipes and how to use dutch ovens. We also do alot of camping and practically all of our cooking is done in the ovens. And the food tastes great. Everything from the main dis to breads and desserts you can't go wrong. Also anything that you can make ahead of time and freeze will really cut down on you cooking time and more time with the family.

Are you car camping? Will you have a cooler handy? If so, we often do tacos or burritos (cooking and pre-cutting ahead of time all the toppings and storing in them tupperware). It's less work when you get to the campground.. and everyone can pick and choose what they want in their burrito/taco (meat included). We also do spaghetti -- use a meatless sauce for the vegetarians and serve italian sausage on the side for the meat eaters. Have fun!

I was a councler at a girl scout camp and we made Pizza pockets. We used the cast iorn molds used to cook toast in over the fire and buttered 2 pieces of bread put the buttered side on the mold and place cheese, sauce, and whatever fillings that you wish in them and put the molds together and hold them over fire till warm and the cheese is all melted. This went over well with the girls and they liked that they could use what fillings they wanted for their own pizza. For dessert we would bake apples in the colas.

My family does alot of camping as well as we love my dads DUTCH OVEN cooking. He does all kinds of stuff in the dutch oven. He has made dutch oven breakfast, which is eggs, cheese, hashbrowns and ham and/or bacon. Since there will be two vegetarians there, you can leave out the ham and bacon. He also makes dutch oven beef stew. Again, you can leave out the stew meat and just make veggie soup. He also makes BBQ ribs in the dutch oven and then we put it over rice. He also makes cobbler in the dutch oven. VERY YUMMY!!! You can use any type of fruit that you want. He cakes a cake mix and instead of using water to make up the cake mix, he uses sprite or 7-up and then put in whatever fruit you want and let it cook and you are ready to do.

Over the fire, we usually just do hotdogs. We have tried hobo dinners but I guess we usually have the fire to hot and in places, the food tends to burn so that part is trial and error.

Good luck and make sure to have lots of fun.

One of my best girlfriends makes the best chicken drums and wings for camping. She just buys the frozen bag of unflavored, uncooked drums and wings. You can buy them at Wal-Mart. She puts them in a huge zip-lock bag with her favorite marinade. I know it had teriyaki, brown sugar, and molasses in it. But you can add whatever spices you like. She let it sit in the bag for a day, and threw it all on the camp grill for dinner. I'm sure if you make a small campfire you can lay a grill grate over it for cooking. My friend lives in California now, but if this sounds like something you want to try, let me know and I can get the exact recipe from her. She is one of the best cooks I know. Her daughter, now 11 yrs. old, thinks it's a treat when her mom makes meatloaf. Happy camping. I can't wait to go with my husband and kids this year.

tinfoil dinners. You can put anything in there. growing up, we put hamburger meat, carrots, potatoes, and onions in tinfoil. Close it up where contents won't fall out. Bury it underneath hot coals in fire pit, cook for half hour. check meat to make sure done.

We go camping a lot. Try doing Pita Pocket Pizzas. Buy the pre sliced and get pizza sauce and your favorite toppings. Wrap them in a double layer of tin foil and place them in the coals of your fire. Turn them at least once. Wahla pizza! You can cook most anything like that. Veggies with butter, meat of all kinds. Camping is great!!

My girls loved roasting hot dogs (we use turkey dogs, you could use veggie dogs for your vegetarians) on skewers last summer when we went camping, then we washed off the skewers and let them toast marshmallows. Kids love to have the chance to cook for themselves. I love dutch oven food but I have not bought a dutch oven yet, they can be expencive. So I do lots of foil dinners, they are cheap and easy to make. I like to use boneless skinless chicken breasts, a fresh sliced lemon, baby carrots, a cut up red potato, thyme, pepper, and salt. Wrap it all in heavy duty foil (it HAS to be heavy duty) and put it in the cooler all ready to go, then cook it on coals, not big flames, unitl you think it is done (who uses a timer in the woods?) open it up and see if it is done, if not wrap it back up (you may need to use more foil) and put it back on the coals unitl it is done. You can make an endless variety of foil dinners, with or without meat. Seasoning is key, I had the grossest foil dinner as a girl scout once, just hamburger and potato without any spices whatsoever! So make sure to be creative and spice it up! And remember that the smaller you cut up the veggies the faster they will cook. I you are using potatoes make sure and cut them up in little pieces.

I don't have specific recipe ideas, only the suggestion that Morningstar Farms and White Wave brand make a lot of vegetarian meat substitutes. You could easily substtute their veggie crumbles or chik'n strips in any foil dinner recipe for the vegetarians among you. They are already cooked and just need to be heated through. Vegetable and meat and/or tofu kabobs are always yummy if you can perfect cooking them over the fire--maybe they'd be good wrapped in foil. You could assemble and amrinate them before you go and eat them on the first day you were there.
Also, s'mores are not technically vegetarian if you use regular marshmallows (most careful vegetarians avoid gelatin, since it is an animal product). I make s'mores with marshmallow cream and melt it a bit into messy gooeyness by holding it with tongs on a graham cracker near the fire for just a few seconds. Good stuff! Have fun!

I remember when I went camping with my oldest sister, she used to crack all of her eggs ahead of time into a tall tupperware container. When it was time to make srambled eggs, she just shook the container and poured them into the frying pan.
Since you cook in a fire pit, wrap some potatos in foil before you leave the house. Then all you have to do is throw them in the pit for awhile and you can have "baked" potatos.
I'm sorry I'm not more help. Our camping has turned soft since grandma got the RV!

You could make omelets for breakfast- Just put 2-3 eggs into a freezer zip lock bag and mash up the eggs. Then you can add whatever you want to each omelet- cheese, meat, veggies. . . you're daughters can make their own omelets. Just throw them in the cooler and you're ready to go! Drop the baggies in a boiling pot of water (all at once)for 13minutes, and you'll have perfectly shaped and cooked omelets. We've done this for big holiday breakfasts because you can prep ahead of time, people get to make their own omelet and get to eat all at once. It's great! Have fun this summer!

Hi T. - couple ideas. When I went backpacking with my Dad, sister and her husband (we were adults obviously at this point!) we had to be smart as my brother in law is a vegitarian. We had divied up the meals and this is what everyone brought:
dinner - pita sandwiches with fresh vegies, for the meat lovers fresh sliced ham or turkey, lots of cheese and HUMMIS - great and easy to pack - don't need mayo, etc. with the various flavors available; chips and fresh fruit
breakfast - oatmeal, fresh granola, fresh fruit, hot cocoa
lunch - sandwich fixings, fruit
dinner #2 - my dad caught fish and we cooked them up over an open fire, had some rice (quick 5 minute stuff) and a can of vegies - we liked the small potatoes and le seur peas. Again, fruit for desert, maybe some fruit roll ups for the kids - easy ot pack?
have fun!!!!

Hi T.,

When I was growing up my family did tons of camping...the tents, open fire etc... One thing that has always stood out is the meals. My mom would make up ''TV dnners'' ahead of time that only needed to really be warmed thru over the fire. Sometimes it would be a hamburger patty (no bun, but you could take those seperately), a small corn on the cob, and a small baked potato. She'd put them all in foil trays (or just in foil), wrap them up, and when dinner time rolled around, she'd pop em over the fire and heat em up. Sometimes it would be meatloaf and veggies, chicken and veggies...etc. All pre-made at home and ready when you are. With kids involved, maybe hotdogs and potato wedges. Use your imagination when making them up, let the kids help! Then of course there is the must have S'mores!! Yum...Now I want to go camping! LOL Have fun!

You can try to look into "mess kits" and recipes for those. We used them at girl's camp when I was young. It was fun and easy. Of course, there is always dutch oven cooking. You can do a Google search on both of these. Maybe you can do a Google search on ideas for camping as well.

I don't know if you have heard of foil dinners, but this always a good one. For snacks, you can make smores.

I am not sure what you have heard of as far as these suggestions. If you need more information on anything, email me and I will elaborate for you.

It sounds like you will be having a fun time camping. Enjoy your summer!

I don't tend to pre-cook things but I do prep stuff.. especially salad stuff. We do both foil cooked items and things on our camp stove (I highly recommend investing in one -- fires can take some time to get to the right temp).
I've done chili (in a packet..add meat/beans/tomatoes), quick rice and then put it over corn chips and salad. I've made campfire pizza (basically it's on the campstove on a large skillet with spray oil). Tortilla's, sauce, cheese and toppings. Tortilla's are great for making breakfast burritos and sandwich wraps.

Keep it simple -- I like to cook and I especially like cooking fresh food when camping.

Good luck
