Cake Suitable for a One-year Old

My son is going to turn one year old in a couple of months and of course he MUST have a birthday cake. With everything I hear about not giving babies cow's milk, eggs, etc. is it okay to use, for example, Duncan Hines cake mix to make my son's birthday cake? I mean, sure it won't be pretty like a store-bought or custom made cake (He'll be ONE; he'll probably just put his foot in it anyway) but is it okay for him to EAT it?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

WOW! Thanks so much for all the great advice, everyone! This was my first question to post and I got so many wonderful hints, tips & tricks. I think I will make his cake myself and I really like the whipping cream suggestion instead of super-sugary icing. Most of all, I'm going to do what ALL of you said and just have fun with it. Thanks again!

My son did fine with a homemade cake. If you are really worried about it then you can make a mashed potato cake! Martha Stewart made one and it looked just like icing! I bet she'd have it on her website.

Yes it is perfectly fine for him to have a cake mix cake. Honestly, by this age (10 months) all 4 of my kids were eating nothing but table food. They did not have full glasses of milk until after a year, they still took formula, but they ate Mac and Cheese, yogurt, french toast made w/ milk and egg....

Personally, I think the mom made cakes are the best. As they get older they can be a huge part of the decorating process....

Have fun!

I don't think there is anything wrong with a good old fashion cake for a baby's first birthday. Just to let you know, Albertson's will provide you with a personal size cake FREE for the baby to tear up when you order their first birthday cake with them. It works really well because the guests can enjoy the big cake while your son has his very own to rip apart. And the mess? We put an old sheet under our daughter's high chair so we could throw it out and not have cake to have to pick up.

Hi there! We made a regular box cake and put whipped cream on it instead of icing, for each of our three kid's - less mess, less sugar and they all loved it!

I would get a healthy cake recipie online and make sure to use at least 1/2 of the four whole wheat and non-bleached white.
I use non-aluminum baking powder and all natural vanilla (not fake vanilla flavor). Sometimes, I substitute carob powder for coco powder and soy milk for regular milk. I do use eggs, but i use organic.

For icecream, I make fruit ice with my Champion juicer. It is just frozen fruit with frozen bananas pushed through and homogeized. It tastes just like sorbet, but with no added sugar (becasue the bananas are really ripe).

I hope this helps! Liz

after a kid turns a year it is fine to give them cows milk. and the only reason they say not to give them eggs is because they could choke on it. if you are really worried you can us soy milk and egg beaters. but i had tom thumb make a small cake for my son and he is fine 1 month after the party. and he was bf then on soy next step formula. he didnt have an upset tummy at all.

S.- I used a Duncan Hines cake mix for my son's first birthday, and he loved it! (What he got in his mouth anyway, most of it ended up on his face, hands, feet, tummy :)) If your son has no allergies to eggs or milk, etc; he should be fine. I think it's better to make a cake for him, because he'll absolutely destroy it and it's a lot cheaper than buying a fancy cake. Good luck!

The homemade cake will be great! By the way, my daughter just turned one yesterday and I started transitioning her from formula to milk when she turned 11 months. Now she is only on whole milk in a sippy cup and she is doing great. So I wouldn't worry too much about not giving your son milk unless he is allergy prone.

My daughter turned 1 a week ago and she has been on Nutrimigen since less than a month old because she had an allergy to milk. I just gave her regular cake at her birthday and she didn't have any reactions. It was chocolate with white icing.

My son was on soy formula because he couldn't tolerate milk, but we made his cake from a box and he LOVED it. No tummy problems, and he had a blast making a big mess out of it. I really wouldn't worry about reactions unless he's shown intolerance to other foods. Hope Canaan has a fun birthday!

Yes, yes, yes! Make him a cake! We always do a home-made (well, if you count out-of-the-box home made!) cake on the night of our girls' actual birthdays. I do buy a bakery cake for the party, tho. But, both my girls had a cake on their first birthday and LOVED it! We had no problems with allergies or anything of the sort. And, like another mom posted, we held off on whole milk until they turned a year, but did all kinds of other diary stuff like yogurt, cheese, etc. And, you can start giving whole milk, eggs, etc once they turn a year anyway...so ENJOY!!

My son will be 13 this summer so it's been awhile. But for his 1st birthday, we did an ice cream cake (like Carvel). It was yummy and somewhat messy - making for great pictures! I certainly didn't give him a lot of sweets at that point which made such a rich dessert all the better to him. I think he got almost as much on his face and in his hair as he did in his mouth. Have fun with it and don't worry about it.
