Burping at Night

Hi Moms, My 4 month old wakes up at night to be feed. I bottle feed him but since he is sleep he does not burp no matter how much I try holding him different positions now my concern is this might build up gas in his stomach any suggestion as what to do to get him to burp?

Thanks in advance for your input!

What can I do next?

Hey K.,

I would just give him mylicon drops... BEFORE his feeding... preferably 15 mins prior to feeding but if not then right before. It makes a huge difference in gas and again, I know the bottle say after.. but the NICU and medical professionals will tell you before. We used it that way and what a relief. Hope this helps.

Has he been having problems with gas when you lay him down after a feeding? If he has, then certainly rub his back or just stand and rock with him a few moments to work the bubble out. But if he isn't having any problems, you shouldn't need to worry about it. By four months old a baby should be able to work out his gas with just a little movement on his part in his crib. I stopped burping my daughter within a few weeks because she was never gassy. My 4 1/2 month old son has had some major gas and acid reflux issues, but he is finally getting past them and never has a problem after the night feeding anymore. Good luck!

Hello K.! My daughter would never burp when she was a baby. She would just fall asleep after her bottle. I would hold her upright on my shoulder and rub her back for a little bit in case she needed to burp. If your child isn't gassy I really wouldnt worry about it. If you are really worried about him not burping talk to your childs doctor on the next visit. More in likely your son just isnt a gassy baby. Good luck.

Try rubbing up his back between his shoulder blades - doing it as you rock him back and forth helps, too.

Try laying him flat on his back after a feeding for a bit- then pick him up and do the usual things to get him to burp. It usually helps. Guess because they kinda stretch out. Anyway- it always worked on my babies when they seemed to not be able to burp.

Hi, I have also wondered about this with my son. I found that when they are asleep or very relaxed they often don't feel the need to burp. So you don't have to worry. If she has one, it will come out on it's own.

i am a 40 year old first time mother of a 7 month boy.
mine did the same with not burping except it was at night
right before he went to bed.. several times he cried out during the night and when i picked him up, he burped.
my cousin taught mme to feel the air in his back- if you rub around i promise you can find the spot he normally burps with.. otherwise, if you stand up with him, thats a better way for air to release. it works. not sure why..
i suggest you read babywise. i have followed it to a t.
my 7 month has slept through the night since week 7.
hes woken lately with a small cry but the book says let them for a few minutes and they go back to sleep.. you
need rest and a 4 month old is old enough to sleep 10
hours i promise.. good luck. L. b

If they need to they will burp. My daughter never really burped ever but especially if she was sleepy. So don't worry, they will if they need to.
