Burnt on Food

My mother-in-law made a meatloaf in my glass Pyrex casserole dish last night. I have tried everything I can think of to get the burnt-on-sauce off my dish. I let it soak overnight, I tried good old fashioned elbow grease with a scrub sponge, I tried an SOS scouring pad...nothing. And the burnt on stuff is really thick too. I haven't even made a dent in it. Any suggestions that will ease my scrubbing? Is there something I should soak the dish in? Something that might scrub a little better? Thanks for your help. I don't want to have to throw away my casserole dish!!! HELP!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So I gave the good old elbow grease another try. After letting the pan soak for days, I finally decided to go at it with a metal spatula. The spatula scraped off the thick burnt on food and the remainder I was able to scrub away with a sponge. Thanks to all you moms who sent me your advice and tricks!!!

Well when I have pots that do this, what I do is put some baking powder in it and boil it on the stove and out it comes. If you can't bake it off (try the oven) put exteremly hot water in the dish with the powder and it should help.

Not sure if this would work on a casserole dish or not, but someone told me to add water and reheat it so it softens up the baked on food. I guess that really depends on where it's stuck on! Good luck!

Dawn Dissolve. This is a Dawn product in a blue spray bottle (not real big). It's in the dish detergent section. I use this on everything. I also use it to clean the top of my stove. Spray it on and let it soak in by itself first. Then try to clean. If that doesn't work - I know this sounds sort of gross, but oven cleaner should do the trick.

You can try to fill the pan with water and microwave it for a few minutes. Let it cool and try the scrubbing again. You may want to try a scouring powder and the scrubber sponge or steel wool.

It is great to have someone cook dinner for you but at what cost? LOL!

good luck

there was a thing on the Today show the other day about cleaning Thanksgiving dishes. They said fill the dish with water and put a bounce fabric softner sheet in it overnight. Then what ever is stuck to it will come off easily the next day when you wash it. Haven't tried this yet myself, but worth a try. Good luck.

Hi Stephanie,

First off I made the same mistake you did as far as using a scouring pad on glass. You should never do that because it makes grooves for more food to stick in and will be harder to clean next time.

This is what I found on line: there is a product you can find it at any Dollar General or Family Dollar, or your local grocery store. Mean Green! You spray it on let it set for a few min then use a sponge to wipe it off. The best part is it is safe on all surfaces and most times there is NO SCRUBBING needed!!!

Hi Stephanie, I had the same problelm once and the only way I found to get rid of the stain was to soak it in hot soapy water and then use a butter knife or steak knife to scrape the burn off.
It eventually worked and then I used a brillo pad to remove remninents of the stain.
I hope this hint helps you.

I've used this product, I think it's from Easy Off. It's in a spray bottle and you spray it on the burnt stuff, let it sit a while, and then wipe it off. Knock on wood, I haven't had to use it in a while, so I can't remember the exact name of it, something like Power Dissolve. Good luck. I've actually had to use fingernails on some things in the past, so I hope you can find something that works for you!

Hi Stephanie. Have you tried scraping the crusty stuff off with a scraper or a pancake turner (a strong one)? The trick is to work that stuff off first. You could even put some water in the pan and try warming it up to soften it. You can reclaim your pyrex!! Once you get the bulk off then take a SOS pad to your pyrex and it will be as good as new! LOL your MIL should know that!! Best wishes.

Dear Young Moms~
I would like to send out a general message regarding many of the responses that I read to this request. Before you use Kaboom or Eazy Off oven cleaner or any other chemical cleaner, please stop for a few minutes and consider the possible consequences of using these products. Do they have warnings on the label? Do they list any ingredients? Most products used in our homes are not required to list the ingredients, because these are considered to be their 'trade secret'. Are these products safe for your children, your pets, and the planet?
Let's look at the simple dryer sheet..does it make you wonder what is on a dryer sheet that would dissolve baked on grime, yet the manufacturer wants you to think that it is safe to use on your children's clothing? Most dryer sheets are made from oil based poly propylene and will never break down in the landfill, and they are coated with nasty chemicals that rub off on your clothing and bedding. These chemicals are absorbed through your skin, and stored in your body. Any wonder why so many people have skin irritations and asthma and cancer.
All of these chemical cleaners came into existence after World War II, so 60 years later, we are seeing much evidence that they are harming our health and the environment
Moms, please take 18 minutes to watch a video that might change your mind about using traditional cleaners in your home. Go to www.theglobalsuccessteam.net and click on 'Toxic Brew'. This is a Canadian investigative report on chemicals in household products and the health problems that they are causing.
Also, please consider reading 'Green Goes with Everything' by Sloan Barnett, available on Amazon or in book stores. This mom's child had an asthma attack and they found out it was from their cleaning products, and she wants to tell the world about safer products.
Sorry to be so didactic, but I worked in health care for over 30 years and I did not know anything about harmful chemicals until I started checking things out myself. I have 5 small grandchildren and they now live in safer, green homes- I just wish that I had known about this 30 years ago, so I am trying to help you along the road to a healthier home.
Please contact me if you need any more information- I have tons of articles to share. I can help you to find safer products that work well.
To a Healthier 2009,
M.

I have the same problem when my husband makes dinner. I soak the dish with Kaboom for at least a 1/2 hour and repeat as needed. Most degreasers should work. That is what we use in restaurants. Make sure to clean the dish after the burnt food is removed. Good Luck.

In case that wasn't it, i wonder if they have a website you could go to.. the show is called "How Clean is Your House?" The guy had let a dirty pot sit on the stove for like a year and if it cleaned that, hopefully it will work for you!!! Please let me know if you try it and what the results were. Good luck!!! :D

I have 2 suggestions for you. When I burned rice to the bottom of a pot I looked online and found that using dishwasher soap was a solution. I put the liquid dishwasher soap right on the burned part and let it sit overnight. My pot has never been so clean! My second suggestion is to try Ajax. I heard it gets the brown spots off of Corningware casserole dishes so maybe it would work on burned meatloaf too.

Best of luck!!

A little trick..... Cocoa Cola. Works in pots and pans too, to remove burnt on food. Fill it with coke and let it sit over night. Then you should be able to get everything off. Works better if you add heat, (that's what I do in pots and pans) put it on the stove for a few minutes. Maybe if it is small enough you could put it in the microwave for a minute to heat the coke. Or in the oven with a pan underneath it catch any drips. Unreal how well it works.
