Bunk Bed Recommendations

I have two boys, ages 6 and 3, and they share a bedroom. My 3 year old is in a toddler bed but is ready to transition into a regular bed (after napping in his brother's bed for several months and also sleeping in a twin bed on our vacations). We are looking for a bunk bed and am wondering what pros and cons there are to the different bunk beds. I saw on-line a few beds that actually have slides which come off of a tower that attachs next to the bed. That seems like a fun and safer way of getting down. Does anyone own one? I have only seen them on line and so I don't know if they are shoddy. Where do you recommend I look for a bunk bed? I am looking for something that is safe and that they will like but, if possible, I don't want to completely give up on functionality (one that you can reconfigure from a twin over twin to an L or to side by side beds). Any tips or recommendations would be greatly appreciated!!

IKEA has a large selection of bunkbeds.

So does Jordans.

I went with IKEA because all of Jordan's bunkbeds (except for on, I think) are NOT made of solid wood.

We bought bunk beds for our boys last fall at the Bedroom store on Rte. 1 south in Peabody. It is next door to the Cabaret. We looked in all of the traditional furniture stores and they were way too expensive. This store has anything you can think of for bunk beds, and all kinds of price ranges too. The people in this store were very knowledgable and didn't mind my kids trying out all of the beds. My boys love their bunk beds. My youngest has had some accidents on it, nothing serious, he loves to climb onto to top bunk. Even if I take the ladder away, he still finds a way to get up there. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Dream On Futon in Cambridge stocks really wonderful bunkbeds from a scandinavian maker Flexa, that are completely interchangable. You can split them into two double beds, add legs to make lofts, etc. All solid wood, no off-gassing glues or composites, etc. Pricey, but if you can afford it, would last forever. When our two are ready for bunkbeds, this is the route we're going.:)

Hi J.,
I am a mother of two boys 5 year old and 1 1/2 year old. We just recently bought a bunk bed for them to evenutally share. They are not in one room but maybe will be one day. My oldest was begging for this bed, he knows he can only sleep on the bottom bunk until he is 6 , per rules of the bed.
He has not got a full night's sleep in it yet since we bought it a month ago. He has an imagination that is running wild and is afraid that all the bad guys and monsters now have more places to hide since there are drawers under the bed and a place for them to hide on top. It has been a bad move on our part for this bed. We got it at Bob's Discount furniture and the price was right, it added up after the mattresses and all but overall very reasonable. It can separate into two separate twins some day.
