Bumpy Diaper Rash
My daughter has had fairly mild diaper rashes in the past but has just recently developed a bumpy rash. It almost looks like little pimples. Her mild diaper rashes were never bumpy, just red. I called her doctor's office to see what they recommend and they want to see her. I'm bringing her in tomorrow morning but I'm wondering if anyone else has had experience with this bumpy sort of rash and what worked for them? I have been using Desitin which has worked on her more mild rashes. I've been using it religiously on this rash too but it just doesn't seem to be doing the trick.

I'd like to thank everyone for their quick responses! I took her to the doctor this morning and it was indeed yeast. The doctor prescribed Nystatin cream for her.

It's hard to know without being a physician or seeing it first hand. But, possibly a yeast rash of sorts. My child had one once and the Dr. gave a perscription med. for it. Destin doesn't always work for some rashes. Most other types of over the counter creams have the same types of ingreadiants and my not work either. The prescription types work great. Do take the child to the dr. The rash could go away so much faster and it's so hard to have the child in pain every time it needs a changing. I felt embarrassed the first time I took my child to the Dr. for diaper rash and felt like I must be a bad parent . . . but there are lots of foods and drinks that can irritate that skin area . . rashes can be a common thing. It's not always the parents fault. Please, go ahead and see the Dr. It's in the best interest of the child.

Hi E.,
By all means, I am no physician, so don't take this as medical advice! But, the same thing happened to my first son, and my doc told me that the bumps indicate a fungal/yeast-type of infection, which I guess is common in babies. Desitin didn't work for me, either. What they told me to use was chlortrimiton (sp?)-it's an antifungal safe for babies' bottoms. You can check with your pharmacist--they'll know what stuff to use. Happy diapering!

When My daughter had the same symptoms it was a yeast infrection. My doctor said to use Lotramin 2 times a day for 7-10 days.

E.,
I found a great diaper rash cream. I used balmex and desitin all through my first son's infancy, but my second son, born in June 2007 developed a bad rash when he was just a couple weeks old and my old standbys didn't work. I did some research and found 2 creams that were supposed to work on the difficult rashes I went and got some Tripple Paste, it's a little more expensive, but it works and I figure if it's going to work and save my kids the pain of diaper rashes, I'll spend the money. Anotehr kind my cousin swears by is ButtPaste, it's got the same active ingredient and works great too.
You could try that too...but if you have a dr appointment, I'd save the money until you know if it's an infection like the last poster suggested. until then, a good soak in a warm tub usually helps to relieve some pain.

My daughter is 3.5 months old and she has acid reflux. I thought her bumpy rash was an allergic reaction to the brand of diapers. I discussed it with her doctor, and she said the rash was most likely due to acidic urine & stools. She prescribed a special ointment that has maalox in it, and the rash disappeared immediately. Just a thought...

Yep it sounds like a yeast infection. If you are nursing, watch for signs of thrush in both you and her. If you develop thrush, gentian violet on you and in her mouth will clear it up, as will acidophilus caplets, you take them, and also break one open and rub the powder in her mouth so she can swallow it. its a probiotic and 'good' bacteria that will help fight it off.

Yeast can look kind of pimply. My son gets that a lot. We've been giving him acidophilus (the live and active cultures in yogurt, concentrated) for a while and that seems to help it go away and prevent rashes. If you're interested in brands/ doses, let me know.
