Hello, I wanted to get some opinions on whether or not I should purchase a breathable bumper. currently I have a quilted bumper and used it for my other 2 girls and everything worked out fine. Now I am a bit more sensitive and wondering what might be best.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone for your wonderful advice. So, I decided to go the breathable bumper route and just received it for Christmas. I can't wait to put it up and see how it works. I also can't believe how soft it is too. Thanks!

Hi Deborah,

I will probably get a lot of flack for it, but I used (and still use) a quilted bumper. My son LOVES his bed and he is a mover so we have really needed the bumper. He bangs about all night long in his sleep so it was a good choice for us.

I had, loved, and swear by the breathable bumper. My son would wiggle his way into the corner, but if I didn't have a bumper there his arms and legs would get caught. The breathable bumper was a perfect answer for what I needed. I wasn't too concerned for protection of his head since he couldn't do any harm by rolling over and bumping his head. I say go for it!

Breathable :) I had quilted for #1 and switched to breathable for #2 and will do for #3 too. It keeps the toys/legs in the crib but completely collapses if they try to stand on it so you can keep it in the crib as they age. Mine has 2 velcro pieces so you could actually put on the back of a converted toddler bed from a crib to again keep the toys in :) And, of course, less worries about suffocation. Best wishes!

I just bought the breathable bumper because my son was always smashed right up against the quilted bumper. The quilted bumper I had was very tight and firm so it was probably fine, but I will tell you that since I bought the breathable bumpers I sleep a whole lot better! Everyone and everything I read had me so paranoid that getting the breathable bumper is totally worth getting a good night sleep even if it won't really make a difference.

We had both, the quilted bumper that came with the crib bedding set and the breathable bumper that I bought for safety. I put the breathable bumper on the inside, so it was the only one the baby came in contact with and it did it's job of being breathable if she smashed her face up against it in the night. I used the pretty, quilted bumper on the outside of the crib, just as decoration until she got big enough to start messing with the ties. My daughter is 19 months and we still have the breathable bumper on her crib because it acts as a binky barrier and helps keep her binkies in the crib where they are easy to find the next morning and it also acts as a visual barrier to prevent her from being tempted by the outlet (even though it has a safety cover on it) right at face level behind her crib. I also, just for an added precaution, tuck the bottom edge of the bumper in below the top edge of the crib mattress, to prevent any gaps. Good luck!

I swear our breathable bumper saved my oldest's life. For $20 at Babies R Us...I say go for it. I wouldn't be without one, we're using the same one on our second now.

I looked at the breathable bumpers and they are very thin mesh, so while they will keep arms and legs from between crib bars they offer no portection from head bumps. I decided to skip the bumper altogether because I had safety concerns but my daughter is currently sleeping in her pack and play because the mesh sides are much more forgiving than the crib bars, so I can't say that forgoing the bumper has been the ideal situation either.
