Bug Spray - Scottsdale,AZ

We will be heading to the mountains and I want to be prepared with bug spray. I hadn't thought about it until now and used to use Skin so Soft. We fly on Wednesday so getting the Skin So Soft ordered will not be practical. What do others use for their kids? My kids are 4 and 21 months. Should I go for a deet free type since they are younger? I have heard many of them stink too. I am not even sure if it will be an issue, but I want to be prepared and not sorry later! My poor daughter swells up from simple gnat bites! I can't imagine how annoying a mosquito bite will be to her.

What can I do next?

I like using "Swy Flotter" by Kiss My Face. I've found it at Sprouts and Sunflower Market. I think Whole Foods has it too.

Have fun in the mountains!

We've used the Repel lemon eucalyptus and it works great! It does smell like lemon but rather that than some of the other alternatives. The ones with picaridin aren't as harmful as the DEET. DEET is only ok if it's just sprayed onto fabrics, never onto skin is it safe.

We love "Bite Blocker." It is deet-free and smells much better than other natural repellents that we've tried. It works, too! It's the neem oil that stinks - it's better masked in this product than some. If you ask me, Off! stinks, too! I just would not put deet on my little ones. I ordered mine online, but have read that Whole Foods carries it now.

Have a great time in the mountains! :)

Got to the pet section and pick up some catnip spray. Spray it only on the clothes. Catnip is 50% better than deet, it is a good repellent. Just be careful with the amounts.

Last summer we took our son camping who was then almost 2. I used Off family care towelettes made by Skintastic. They are individually wrapped wet wipes that I could wipe my son down with (I actually used them on his clothes too with no damage to his clothes) I liked them because I could control where the stuff went insead of such a broad spray. I also found a little bracelet at Sportman's Wherehouse (Greenfield and the 60, Walmart plaza) they were a bug repelant bracelet that I actually hooked on the back belt loop of his pants so he wouldn't mess with it. I don't remember any bug bites, it was over a year ago, so there might have been one or two, but nothing that his sensitive, exema skin reacted too.
Good luck and hope you have fun!

you can use citronella which is an oil which comes from a plant so it's chemical free.
if you do have bites, i use tea tree oil (with lavender) which usually takes the itching away and usually the bite is healed in a few hours.

I know some Avon reps have Skin So Soft on hand (maybe someone else already commented on this). I know the swap meet has it but I guess they wouldn't be open before Wednesday either.

My pediatrician said 10 percent deet or less is OKAY for kids your kids ages. Avoid spraying hands. I prefer Skintastic Family in Tropical scent. My husband is particurlarly sensitive (and VOCAL) when things don't smell good. He has no problem with this one.

Have fun on your trip!

I don't know what part of the valley you are in but there are some actual physical locations for Avon and I do know there is an Avon Kiosk at Arizona Mills and they do have Skin so Soft at the Kiosk.

Enjoy your vacation.

avoid toxic chemicals on all children - read ingredients and if it isn't something you would eat don't use it on them

I can't remember the name, but a few years ago I got this stuff at whole foods that was a wipe on bug repellant. I don't know if it would work well for an onslaught of bugs, but it is worth a try and very natural. It would be in the bug repellant area.

Try using the yellow Listerine. Yeah, I know that sounds strange, but it works and it's WAY cheaper than buying bug spray. Just put it in a spray bottle and spray away. Not only does it smell a little better, it also has a cooling sensation. Just be careful around the eyes - it does sting. And a big bottle of it only costs about $6!

We use it all the time because we have a really big mosquito problem - my kids are 7 and 3, and my 7 year old is like a MAGNET for mosquitoes. They eat him UP! But since we started using this, he's hardly had any bites.

Hope this works for ya!

My daughter and I are mosquito magnets. We usually use Skin So Soft too, but have run out and haven't placed another order yet. In the meantime, I've been using Bull Frog's Mosquito Coast spray (DEET free). It works, whereas the natural Burt's Bees bug repellent that I also tried did not.
Have fun!

Hi.

I am not sure where you live but Sunflower supermarket in Tucson carrys a bug cream by Badger that is deet free and has worked well for us. I like it because it smells nice too and I don't have to worry about putting it on my daughter.
