Bug Repellent for Babies.
Does anyone know of a good bug repellent for babies? I have tried the wipes from babies r us, but they didnt work at all. I am a bit afraid to use the off brand spray. Any suggestions?

We tried the Avon and it didn't work well enough for us. My daughter is apparently too 'sweet' for the bugs to deny it. We've found several organic products that work great. Some that were peppermint based and some that were aloe based worked best for us b/c we don't like the citronella smell. Good luck.

My pediatrician told me it's safe to use everyday the "off" that is. Just make sure u get deet less than I want to say she said less than 8% deet. But she uses it on her two daily. They go to daycare and play outside alot. She said it's part of their morning routine. I was still am very umm over protective I guess u could say... I don't like feeding my almost three yr old any medicine poisonous spray any of that stuff. I guess my mom kinda made me that way. If we had a headache as kids we ate a peppermint. If we were conjested, my mom put vicks on our feet then socks and went to sleep with it on. There was no Tylenol every four hours! We're all healthy as adults now fighting it the natural way and I firmly believe it's from not staying on meds and running back and forth to the hospital for every cough or sneeze. Whereas my sister in law from my husband stays very strict with the every 4 hour scheldule from the first cough or sneeze and the poor baby is always sick.

I know Burt's Bees carries a line of repellents - just try to get something that doesnt contain pestacides. Mosquitoes and flies typically dont like strong-smelling herbs: basil, lemon balm, peppermint, etc. Google 'natural mosquito repellent' for a list of safe alternatives that you can even make yourself. If you want to keep them awat from a certain are - such as a patio - you can burn a strong incense. Spices of India at nw 39th & Portland carries a full line of them for about $3 per carton (about 150 sticks). Just put 4-6 of them on the down-wind side of your patio :]

T.,
It was summer when my daughter was just 3 mos old and I did a lot of research on what was safe to put on her for both sunscreen & bug repellent. I probably wouldn't go with a spray at all at that age. I learned that most pediatricians recommend Blue Lizard Sunscreen. And Mom's seem to like it too. We went with California Baby brand based on lots of positive Mom reviews and they use natural products for more sensitive skin (which I think is good for babies) and it worked to keep bugs off as well as protect her from the sun. Now, I've used both California Baby sunscreen and bug repellent products and Avon Skin So Soft sunscreen with bug repellent in it too. All these are lotions, so they're not as convenient, but much safer & they worked for us. Hope that helps. Good luck.

I had people tell me that vanilla (that you cook with) works. I tried it on my 2 year old and it seemed to work. I put a little on my finger and put some on the back of his neck, legs, and arms.
