Can anyone recommend an effective chemical free bug repellant that can possibly repel ticks as well as mosquitoes? Thanks!

We use Avon Skin So Soft with Bug Guard Plus. It repels mosquitos and ticks plus a few other bugs. Plus it has SPF 30.

If you have an Avon Rep in your area, buy the Skin So Soft and bath your child/ren in it as well as rubbing it on when they go out. I know this works for mosquitoes, however not sure of ticks. It is chemical free and whatever is in it the mosquitoes do not like. I think its the lemon one. I have myself used either or. Good luck and again, not sure about ticks. I don't think they are around as much as mosquitoes though, unless your chidlren or yourself are doing alot of nature walking in the bush.

I'm not sure there is anything to repel ticks...but I'm not completely sure. In our area, ticks seem to be very thick right now! We just went camping this weekend and I just found another tick on me last night! So, I agree that it would be nice!

I just bought something called Kids Herbal Armour, I haven't used it yet, but the packaging is very convincing! ;) It's also cruely free and no chemcials...got it at Target. I have used Skin so Soft as well and I think it works. Plus, if you're just going in the yard or the park, it's really nice cuz it doesn't smell buggy. Avon also makes an actual bug spray and I used that a lot last summer as well and I thought it was very effective. I even used it to spray down my stroller when we could see the mosquitos swarm and it worked.

For a non-toxic approach, try the following as listed on http://www.ehow.com/how_###-###-####_repel-ticks-humans.html.

Squeeze an ample amount of sunscreen on your hand and mix it with 10 drops of eucalyptus oil before applying it on your skin. Ticks hate the smell of eucalyptus oil, which makes it a potent repellent against them.

Another natural tick repellent that's effective is the Neem oil. Apply some on your skin before going hiking or gardening. Neem oil is a vegetable oil made from a mixture of compressed fruits and Neem seeds (an evergreen tree found in India), and is known to be a very potent insecticide used against ticks and other pests.

Though I personally wear long sleeves and tuck my pants into my socks to prevent ticks and mosquitos, I use neem oil in my garden against not only insects, but several mildew diseases. It's so safe that it's been used as a tooth cleaner in India for centuries.

I don't think anything can repel ticks, but you can place a dryer sheet in your waistband to repel mosquitoes.

As far as my research has shown, DEET works the best to repel these pests, and in fact, it doesn't repel them so much as hide you. Skin-So-Soft may work if it is reapplied every 10 minutes or so. Neem seems to be effective and the EPA has not restricted it in any way.
The Lemon Eucalyptus oil has been shown effective as well.

To protect against and get rid of mosquitoes, the Center for Disease Control has these recommendations http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dvbid/westnile/

The CT Agricultural Station recommends DEET as the most effective repellant, and says the Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard provided 22.9 minutes of protection versus the 88.4 minutes of protection offered by a 4.75 percent concentration of DEET. Here is the link to that information:
http://www.ct.gov/caes/lib/caes/documents/publications/fa...

So it if you use the natural repellants, it seems you have to reapply them frequently. I am interested in trying the Neem oil, too. Maybe I'll do my own version of sticking my forearm out with various repellants to see if they work!
