Brown Stains on Upper Four Teeth

Hi there-
Yesterday I noticed that my 13 month old has brown stains on the upper part of the tooth on all for of his top teeth. I am a little worried about this. I don't know if it's decay or what? I though decay would be more black in color. His other teeth are fine, it's only those 4. I don't let him got to bed with a bottle and I brush his teeth. I tried to scrap it off with my nail yesterday and it wouldn't come off. Has anyone see this on their children before?

Thanks!
J.

What can I do next?

Do you give him liquid vitamins? I've heard they can stain teeth brown. I know my nephew hit his mouth a few months ago and it made is tooth basically die. It looks greyish brown now. Luckily it's jsut a baby tooth.

Hi J.,

Did you give your son antibiotics? I have light brown stains on my top front teeth, that have always been there because I had to have antibiotics when I was a baby. They do not just scrape off--they go all the way down past the enamel on my teeth. I suppose I can get them bleached, not sure if that would remove it or not and cannot afford to spend that kind of money to find out. I have used the over the counter whitening which helps a little but it does not make it disappear. Hope this helps,

L.

Often antibiotics will affect the color of teeth, making them brown. My daughter had that happen.

Hey J. I would definatley get that checked out by a dentist. I was a pediatric dental assistant for years before I had my kids and it sounds like decay on your child's teeth. It will only get worse and it would be best to get it checked out. Good luck!

Too much oral fluoride can cause stains on your child's teeth.

Hey J.,

My oldest son (18) has stains on all his four front teeth too, and it was caused directly from the ER doctor giving him the antibiotic Tetracycline when he was 15 months old. He had tonsilitis, we had no insurance and I was panicky. I had known of this problem since I was a teenager. One of my early boyfriends had it from the same antibiotic. If I'd just stopped to think about it, I wouldn't have done it. But, now it's too late. Bleaching doesn't work. The only thing the dentist's say can be done for him is to do veneers. Of course this would cost thousands of dollars. Of course, I dream of coming into money and that is the first thing I would do...but we all know how this is! Sorry it's not better news, hon. Keep brushing his teeth. Keep them healthy. Hugs, Kat

Were you prescribed antibiotics while you were pregnant with him or has he had to take any antibiotics? It could be the result of taking certain types of antibiotics, either him taking them or you taking them during pregnancy. It just has to do with the way the medicine reacts with the calcium in the body, I'm not sure if it will affect his adult teeth as well, though.

I had a brown spot on my front tooth for as long as I can remember. They said that it was Possibly from having antibiotics as an infant or a high fever. Not sure how accurate that is, as I just went the other day and it has now turned into a cavity.

I would make an appointment to see a pediatric dentist or possibly call your pediatrician and ask them. They might be able to tell you a little more or tell you not to worry, without spending the money.

If you need the name of a low-cost ped dentist, let me know, I took my children to a wonderful place:)
