Broken Femur

Hello...my 27 month old broke his femur bone (Thigh bone) while driving his electric motorcycle. It took us by surprise..since he was only driving it, and his Dad turned around to insert a dvd into the play station and he turns around and he was on the floor holding his knee! At first we couldn't decifer what was wrong.. he said it was his hand that hurted (he was crying hysterically at this point) so within a matter of minutes we figured something was broken, and we took him to the ER. We arrive, and the doc and nurses examine him, take xrays and they told us his femur bone was broken. At first they suggested surgery, then the nurse came back in and said the "boss" had said he did not need surgery afterall. Instead they did a splint (feet is exposed, no cast there) They gave us tylenol with codine, and motrin...my questions is... at night he seems to be in ALOT OF PAIN he cries and cries, and seems to twitch or have spasms...has anyone else experienced this? Any ideas on how to bathe him? Anything would help, thank you!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

THANK YOU SO MUCH LADIES! This incident happened on Monday morning, and his follow up was today. I am extremely happy to report that he is doing much better. There is less crying at night and he is able to lift his pelvis by himself. He no longer needs the tylenol with codine, only motrin. He so full of energy, now we have to worry about keeping him busy!

An orthopedic doctor did see him, and he is to keep the sugar-tong splint for 4 weeks, his next follow up. The Ortho said since he's so young it should heal nicely, and won't have negative effects in the future.

He could be having some muscle spasms. When my 6 month old was in a body cast, they had me use the blow dryer under a towel that was on top of her cast to help calm the muscles down, it definitely helped. As far as how I bathed my little one, all I could do was sponge bathe her on the floor in the kitchen. I got a stack of towels (about 2 folded) for under her head to catch all the water and laid her on top of 3 towels (yes, this process used a lot of towels!) for comort on the tile floor. I then had a bowl of warm soapy water (I used Johnsons & Johnsons baby wash) and another bowl with warm, clean water for rinsing. I washed her head with the washcloth and all her body parts that were accessible and then I took a clean wash cloth and soaked it in the rinse water and slowly rung the washcloth out on top of her. Then I tried to rinse her hair the best I could by dumping the rinse water over her head. It was a process but it worked:) GL to you, I know it's rough having a little one with a cast.

My son was a a few months older than that when he broke his. He was in a cast around his hips and all the way down to this ankle. He didn't need surgery but the Dr. did twilight him, set the leg by hand and then cast him. He wore the cast about 5 weeks. The thing is it was an Orthopedic dr who saw my son in the ER. I don't see how a split will help your son in the least. We didn't have any issues with pain after about 2 days. Of course I made sure if he was playing that for every 30 minutes of play even if it was playing with playdoh that he rested an hour. The dr had warned me that once he got over being in a cast he would try to roam and be his usual active self. That I could allow some play and such but to make sure he rested a lot.
I can't stress enough that you need to take your son in either to his regular dr and get him seen there or referred to an Orthopedic dr.

No cast, get a second opinion! A broken femur on a 27 month old needs a spica cast.

He IS in pain! Poor buddy!

I broke my arm at the elbow last year and have 2 plates, 12 screws and 2 pins and wires holding it all together and one thing I can tell you is that I was a twitchy mess at night too! It hurts when bones heal...it just does!!

I would also take him to a pediatric orthopedic surgeon...just in case. They can take their own x-rays and give you a second opinion...can't hurt, right?

My goodness, I would absolutely get a second opinion on this one ASAP. My brother broke his femur as a boy and he had to have an operation and they had to put a metal rod and screws in. This does not sound right to me!

BTW, the femur is the largest bone in the body ... I don't think a splint is going to cut it!

My daughter only slept well after getting her cast. The days she had the splint on were miserable. Hope he gets one!

If the ER doctor did not refer you to an orthopedic doctor, I suggest that you take him to one. My granddaughter only had a hairline fracture and the ER referred her to an orthopod. She wore a cast for a few weeks.

I would question using only a splint. I'd get a second opinion for an orthopedic doctor.

Heat can calm muscle spasms. Cold is also good for pain. Try both.

Tylenol with codine is strong but he may need something stronger. I would ask the doctor about giving him something else for the night.

I would also expect that he needs lots of holding for reassurance. He doesn't understand what is going on. I'd let him sleep with me to see if he does better.

A sponge bath is probably all that you can do for him, tho you could try putting a plastic bag over the splint and then use just a little water in the tub.

My daughter broke both bones in her forearm two years ago. At the ER, an orthopedic surgeon came in and set the bones. They gave her a splint to wear for a few days until the swelling went down. This was on a Friday afternoon. We were to go to his office on Tuesday for the cast, but my daughter was in so much pain that they had us come in on Monday.

Read over your discharge instructions again, I'm sure they intend for you to follow up with an orthopedic surgeon for a cast. If not, call your insurance and pediatrician to find out who you can take him to.

With a fracture of any kind follow up with an orthopedic as an er only does a temporary fix to get you through until you see a specialist and going to another er won't FIX your child. Printed er instructions should gave a suggestion of who to go to but make sure they are peds specialists. The cast er puts on only keeps the worst movement of a break from happening. Call your primary and insurance to find out where you can go and call now. If you are uninsured underinsured or medicaid figure out how to get them in and do a payment plan. This needs to heal properly for your childs future.

Take the poor kid to ANOTHER Doc! Go to another ER if necessary! Do you have any type of insurance? If you do, call them @ the 800 # & find a Ped Ortho Doc! Do it NOW! I have an 12yr old in a wrist cast right now & she doesn't have pain until & unless she 'overdoes', I KNOW that isn't as serious as a femur break, but STILL...get a second opinion!

Good Luck & I hope he gets some relief SOON...
