Breastfeeding Questions - Hoffman Estates,IL
Hi Moms,
I am breastfeeding and pumping at the same time. I know that I can leave fresh pumped breastmilk out for 4 hrs or so but my question is...once I have refrigerated the milk, can I take it out an hour or so before the feeding so I don't have to wait to warm it up. It seems to take a little shorter time than trying to warm it up straight from the refrigerator but I can't find any advice this... Any help would be appreciated. Also is it ok to just pump and feed? I rather do that so that I know exactly how much my baby is eating but will that reduce my milk supply?
Thanks.

Yes, you can leave it out for up to 8 hours actually. Check the guidelines at kellymom.com on this. I think off the top of my head its:
8 hours at room temp
8 days in the fridge
3 months in the freezer or 6 months in a deep freezer
if frozen, it's
1 hour at room temp
1 day in the fridge
I usually just sort of add the hours up. so if you had it in the fridge for 2 days, i'd plan on leaving it out for up to around 6 hours. The guidelines are pretty conservative - milk usually lasts quite a bit longer than this.
Honestly though, (the milk police will arrest me for saying this!) I usually just let my nose and my baby be the judge. If it smells off, it is. If it smells like normal breastmilk, it's fine. Also, babies won't drink the milk if it's off, so if they take a swallow and push it away, you should toss it.

You can just pump and feed, but your baby is better getting the milk out than the pump is. So your baby gets more milk than you pump. Pumping also takes longer than nursing does, unless you have a hospital grade double pump, which is expensive to rent. Our daughter just turned 7 weeks old, and is much faster at nursing now. Good luck!

i used to fill my sink with warm water and let the closed bag or bottle sit in the warm water to warm up a bit or you can run it under warm running water.
