Hopefully this isn't too late. You can try Fenugreek herbals supplements or Mother's milk tea both sold over the counter. I was also put on Reglan with my son- but it has to be prescribed.

At GNC there is a "mothers Milk" organic tea that is supposed to help w/supply. Helped me a bit..what also helped was cream of wheat oatmeal and a beer at night for the first 3 weeks! Odd...but it's an old wives tale that works!

Please don't give up. Make sure you're drinking plenty of water and remember that your supply is based on your baby's demand. If you breastfeed more frequently, you will eventually notice an increase. Sometimes, you have to give your body a few days to catch up, though. So, try to be patient. Also, you may already have plenty of milk. Others may tell you that your supply is not sufficient even when it is. Good luck and as for making the decision to breastfeed... way to go!

Hi! My best advice would be to not give up! My first little girl took a while to really get the sucking down, but i didn't give up. and about the milk, you are probably getting in more than you think. is your baby peeing and pooping regularly ?? that is usually the indicator that he is getting what he needs. remember, breastfeeding is a supply and demand system...the more he demands, the more your boobs will supply:) hope this was helpful:)
btw, i am a teacher too:)

Hi Q. -

CONGRATULATIONS on your brand new baby boy! Be sure to keep a cover handy for those diaper changes... we learned that the hard way w/our son!

A few quick things that are sure to help (and sorry that they may seem like a "no brainer" however many people don't think about these issues). No antihistamine! They will dry your milk up very fast! No, to very limited caffeine. Be sure that you are drinking LOTS of water. A minimum of 4 8oz classes.

If you want to try a supplement Blessed Thistle works great! I know that they have prescription meds as well that your OBGYN can prescribe, just be careful when getting them... one of them (and I can't remember the name) can cause depression... the last thing you need after just having a baby!

Enjoy your sweet Angel and remember, nap when he naps! The house, laundry and mess can wait! ;)

Good luck!

i had this same problem. i called the doctor and they prescribed me some medicen that was suppose to help the milk come in. it did a very little bit. i was also told that the type of breast pump i was using might have caused a problem with it comming in. contact your local le leache club. they can help and will answer questions. i was only getting a half ounce if that for the entire day. i did feel bad that i couldnt breast feed. but when i gave up it was a relife for me and i knew my baby was getting the amount of food he needed. if it works then thats great but if it doesnt try not to dwell on it but just move on and take it as one of lifes bumps! good luck i wish you the best. hope it works out for you. i was told not to eat any pepermint but to eat lots of oatmeal.

Drink water!!! Lots and Lots of water. Even more than when you were pregnant. Plus pump or express when you skip a feeding to give a bottle. I breastfed my daughter for 15 months (no formula ever) and I know it can be hard sometimes.

Continue to breastfeed and offer him the breast more often. Not sure how many times you are feeding him but the more he sucks - the more you will produce. You could contact a Le Leche League counselor as well and get some really good advice.

This recipe will defiantly increase your milk supply; don't forget to feed every two to three hours. Good luck
Preparation:
The next time you're at the grocery store, stock up on bananas and kale. The kale should be dark green in color and not wilted. The riper the bananas, the better, and try to buy organic.
Wash the kale and tear the leaves from the stems. Toss the leaves into a seal-able freezer bag and push out any excess air before freezing.
Peel and chop the bananas in fourths, place into a seal-able freezer bag and push out any excess air before freezing.
This might sound time consuming, but it really doesn't take much time at all, and if you have a baby sling, your baby may enjoy helping you in the kitchen.

Recipe:

1/2 cup pineapple or pineapple-coconut juice
1/2 cup soy, rice, almond, coconut, or any variety of milk (or skip the milk and add more juice)
4 chunks (the equivalent of 1 whole) frozen banana
1 large handful frozen kale leaves

Blend all ingredients until smooth. Serves two.
P.S. This shake is also great during pregnancy and for kids who won't eat their vegetables. It really does taste pretty good.

I breasfted both of my boys for 17 months (which is what I later learned was the average age babies wean themselves off the breast), and this would not have happened had it not been for help from my sister-in-law, a nurse, and a book she gave me: "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding." What you're experiencing sounds natural, as you know the colostrum comes first, and then the milk comes in. More milk will be made as your son's appetite grows. It's a very natural process if you just eat healthy foods, drink plenty of water, and relax/rest whenever possible. If you are stressed or tense, this can reduce the milk production. If you don't have this book, you need to get it! I hope this helps. :)

Q.,
Congratulations on your new baby boy! How fun. And kuddos to you for breastfeeding! It's the best thing you can do for yourself and your baby. I hope that it will be as rewarding for you as it was for me. I have a 16 month old that I just weaned. I work full time, but stayed home with my son for 12 weeks when he was born.

First off, I wonder why you think your milk isn't coming in? Does the baby cry a lot at the breast or refuse to take it? If the baby is thriving and you're feeding on demand, when he asks for it, chances are your milk is coming in just fine and it's the early mom-insecurities that are kicking in - which we all have, by the way! But, if you're convinced that your milk isn't coming in and that you need to boost your production, I would recommend putting your son to the breast more often. Nothing is better than his suckling at your breast to increase production. Also, if you have a pump, you could pump after you feed - that will help as well. Even if you're only getting 2 oz. when you pump, you're stimulating the hormones and sending signals to your body to produce more milk. Remember - your baby is more efficient at extracting milk from your breasts than the pump, so don't worry if you don't pump a lot.

The one thing I would HIGHLY recommend, is do not supplement with formula. This will only decrease your supply because when you put your son to the breast, he will not suckle as much and therefore slow down your production.

Don't give up. It's not easy, but it will become easier and soon it will be second nature!

Here are some really great websites that have a plethora of information. Good luck!

Congratulations on your new baby! The first thing you should look at is how often your two wk old baby is nursing. A two wk old should nurse every 1 1/2 to 2 hours from start to start. They should nurse about 10-15 minutes on each side at each nursing session (some like to nurse longer and that is okay). At three wks old the baby will have a growth spurt and will be wanting to nurse a LOT to build up your milk supply to where he needs it to be now that he is growing (remember that breastmilk is produced by demand and supply)- could be possible your two wk old is experience his growth spurt a little early. Some babies need a little more time transitioning into this big bright world he has been thrown into as well so they use nursing as a comfort and thank goodness he has that wonderful comfort you are giving him. La Leche League has a lot of really great information and they have a great website - www.lalecheleague.org I know they have helped me threw some pretty tough situations with both of my children. Best wishes to you!

Hi Q.!
I want to share my story with you because I am so excited! I have 4 kids (3 boys and a girl). In a nut shell, I had the hardest time nursing the boys because I did not have a good milk supply either and I always had to supplement. WHen my daughter came along, she was losing weight at a week old, and a friend came to me and told me to start drinking this protein drink from Herbalife. My first thought was "eeewww", but I went ahead and did it, and seriously, 5 1/2 days later my milk WAS IN and she no longer needed the supplemental bottle. ANd to top it off, the shakes were DELICIOUS! I went from a 34C to a 36DD. She gained weight during that time and has since then been the healthiest baby I ever had. She does not have the upper respiratory problems, such as allergies and bronchitis etc, and her teeth are PERFECT. She also started sleeping through the night at 5 weeks! It is amazing what the nutrition did for her through me! If you are interested in chatting, shoot me an email! I'd love to tell you all about our experience!
God bless you and your new family! I pray good health and blessings over you and your new addition!

Keep in touch!

Q.! Congratulations on your little boy! Sorry for yesterday's short reply.

I have the same questions another mom did:
What makes you think your milk isn't coming in? Is ds crying at the end of a feeding? Is it because you're trying to pump and not getting much?

Lots of ways to increase supply:
First I want to say: La Leche League is a phenomenal resource! There are meetings all over the Austin area. I attended the one in Oak Hill yesterday. There is one next Tues in Georgetown, next Thursday night just South of the River on 360, and next Friday morning at Will Hampton Library. Here's the Austin site, so you can find a meeting and leader near you. http://www.lllaustin.org/
LLL has awesome leaders that are always a help. I know they do phone consults and I know there are some leaders who do house calls on a regular basis.

Pumping: My recom. for a pump would be a dbl-electric made by a company that does not make formula (kind of a conflict of interests, right). Instead of, or in addition to, pumping after you nurse, pump while nursing. Put your baby on one side and the pump on the other side. This will take advantage of the letdown that happens for your baby and help you get more pumped out. Don't be concerned if you only get a half ounce pumped. Relaxing can help - but even then, some bodies just don't do well with pumps!

Also for milk supply:
- Nurse on demand. Don't try to schedule your newborn. Babies are used to getting constant nourishment in the womb and take a while to adjust to anything different.
-Water! Make sure you're getting enough!
-Traditional Medicinal makes a "Mother's Milk" herbal tea - it's really great for boosting supply. You have to drink '3 cups' or more a day. Since I'm not a tea drinker, I made a half gallon pitcher of it and drank it cold with a little xylitol/sugar in it. It’s not the most wonderful tasting tea, but I’ve had teas that are much more bitter than this one!
-Stay close to your babe.
-Wear him. Do you have a sling? If not, get one. Since you are in the Austin area you have a few options. The Attached Parenting groups in our area have a Sling Lending Library. You can check out a baby carrier for the month and return it at the next meeting. Also, if you're nearby at all I would loan you one of mine. I actually sell slings, so I have a bit of a selection when it comes to fabrics :-) Wherever you get yours from, if you want help figuring out how to wear your baby, there are two groups (AP, Austin Baby Wearers) who can help. If you do choose a ring sling, I would be more than happy to meet with you to help you out.
My personal opinion - I recommend against the bjourns - they put most/all of the baby's weight on the crotch/groin area and spread little baby hips unnaturally, both of which can cause damage.
-Co-sleep if it's safe for you to do so - you can nurse him more, thus increasing your supply.
-The more your baby nurses, the more milk your body will have.
-All the 'staying close' you can do will help your body hormonally to produce more milk.
- There are certain stretches and pressure points that you can do before nursing/pumping to aid the let-down reflex.
1.) Roll your shoulders around to stimulate between your shoulder blades and spine. 2.) Cross your arms at/near the wrists and, using your knuckles, rub your chest. 3.) Take 3 deep, cleansing breaths. Remember, you will be able to nurse/pump more if you are relaxed.

I’ve also heard that certain beers are handy for increasing supply, but I don’t know anyone with personal experience with this. I don't know how much of it is chemical, and how much of it may be the relaxing effect alcohol invariably has :-)

Also, kellymom.com has some good articles and helpful advice

I know this was kind of long, but I hope that you find some of it helpful!

It sounds like getting a steady demand is the issue now and you have lots of good suggestions for that. If supply continues to be low, one thing you might try that I have not heard mentioned is quinoa. One of my problems when I breastfed was that I tend to not eat enough protein. I made sure to eat lots of legumes (lentils, beans etc) but also quinoa, which is a south american grain that has lots of protein. There are some good recipes out there or you can just cook it and then eat it like hot cereal with some milk and a bit of sugar.

By the way, I have a niece named Q. and don't hear the name often - it is beautiful!

First, whatever you do, don't supplement with formula. You won't stay caught up with his needs. Then let him nurse as often as he wants, - no pacifier. Then take mother's milk tea- it has fenugreek and will help. Hang in there- two weeks is growth spurt time and he's probably trying to increase your supply.

I had difficulty with production as well and consulted a lacatation consultant. She advised me to pump for 10 minutes on each side after each nursing. You might also try a warm shower and allow the water to run down your chest. I never tried any teas because I am not a big fan of tea but I was told that HEB sells one called Mother's Milk and it supposedly helps with production. Nobody tells us how truly difficult breastfeeding can be. I am sure that you already know you should pump to increase breastmilk. Stimulation is what causes us to develope supply. I solely breastfed for 1yr and 9 days. When you pump or nurse, try to eliminate any outside stimulation...no tv, no phone. Maybe turn on some nice lullaby music. Actually watch your baby nurse. This visualization helps the milk to come in more freely. When I pumped, I used to have the baby with me so I could look at her and think about her and the milk would flow faster and harder. It also helps to watch the milk flow from your nipples when you pump. I know it sounds funny, but it helps. Definitely don't give up. You will be so proud of yourself for following this through to whatever your goal may be and your beautiful child will have received one of the best gifts you can give them. Love, Ultimate nutrition, immunities, and a bond unlike any other. Another thing you should do is look for a really good lactation consultant who can come to your home and help you. I bet your OBGYN or pediatrician could turn you in the right direction. Some doctors will tell you that you don't produce enough milk. I don't believe this. I think you can stimulate as much as you need. You just have to know how and sometimes we need to be taught.

You can do it!!!Good Luck!!! I would love to know how this turns out for you.

I don't know IF this is why I had so much milk, but I took in LOTS and LOTS of fluids. Drinking more water than you're used to might help. Just taking a shower would stimulate my milk when the water hit my chest. I wish you the best......I loved nursing my kids, did both kids for 2 years. I didn't plan to go that far when I started, but it just seemed the natural thing to do and I never had to go to formula and worry about allergies and such.

I had the same problem. My OB put me on a nose spray Oxytocin (I think - its been 3 years) and Reglan (Oxytocin is what your body releases when your milk lets down and Reglan reduces stomach gas with the side benefit/effect of helping increase breast milk). I also took Brewer's yeast (herbal) in hopes of increasing my milk. I was doing a lot of pumping, so that didn't help. Definitely talk to your OB to see if he/she can help. Also, I would supplement with a bottle if you are worried about his gaining weight (again, I would talk to your Pediatrician). As long as he is getting some breast milk, you are passing along the benefits of breast feeding to him. And above all, you are a great mom whether or not you breast feed or use a bottle. I think it is so silly to get wrapped up in the whole issue of what is best. I had to stop breast feeding because my milk just gave out, and I remember being so upset about it. My son is 3 1/2 now, healthy as a horse and so much fun. As long as you give him your love, time and attention that is all he really needs. Best Wishes!

Fenugreek and Blessed Thistle. My lactation consultant told me to take these herbs when my son was born prematurely. by the end of the day, the dairy was open. Ask either the Lactation Consultant at the hospital or at the Health Food Store. The Breastmilk tea is so mild, my lactation consultant said I would have to drink 20 cups or more to get close to the same effect as the capsules. Good Luck. Call before you make the trip, but many health food stores carry both of these herbs and HEB and Whole Foods does as well. Also, be sure and get as much rest as you can.

Hi Q., there are many books out there, I like Todays Herbal 3rd Edition by Louise Tenney M.h.

She says that: Blessed Thistle is know to increase mother's milk. Brewer's yeast taken daily will increase milk as well as give the mother necessary energy. Red Raspberry and Marshmallow tea in good. Alfalfa is excellent for rich milk and strength for the mother. Fennel Seeds boiled in barley water helps increase mother's milk.

Please do not think you need to do all those, just pick one that is easiest for you and work with that and see if that helps. You can get this book at any library or a good book store or on amazon.com.

This is an old secret that not many people know anymore. A nice dark beer will help with milk production (its the hops, it also relaxes you). Drink one a day. I had only a half a beer a day and it worked really well for me. TUST ME IT REALLY DOES WORK!!!! Also you can try feeding more often as it is a supply and demand type of situation. The more the baby feeds the more milk you will make.

Congratulations on your little son and good for you that you have chosen to breastfeed your little one. I recommend that you contact a lactation coach (your hospital or doctor should be able to provide to you). In my experience (5 children that were breastfed) it is important to be relaxed and confident when breastfeeding. Also the first 2 weeks always seemed the most difficult so hang in there. The more the baby breastfeeds the more lactating kicks in. There are stores that specialize in breastfeeding supplies and also offer assistance. When my daughter first breastfed she had problems and went to a shop in the Village area of Rice University.

I don't know any in this area but I am sure that a quick search on line or phonebook would help.

Best of luck lactating.

Hi Q. W,
I have 2 sons and both I breast fed. With the first one I struggled a lot with b/f but he actually has problems with eating and low tone in his mouth so that was probably why. With my second son I breast fed him constantly. He was always hungry for more. What I did when I thought there was not enough milk was to stay in bed with him for a couple of days and just drink water, rest and breastfeed. I would not try any teas until I have tried more conservative ways. New borns only require a really tiny amount of milk. It may seem like not enough but it probably is.
I have heard of a book that a lot of people praise and it is called "The Womanly Art of Breast Feeding" . It may be worth reading.
Also find a breast feeding consultant that is sympathetic and nice. Don't get a bossy, fanatical one. They are enough to put your milk off.
One thing not to do is to give formula when you think he has not had enough. Honestly as soon as you do that your milk goes down and there is a pattern formed that will make it harder to go back to the feeding. Babies like bottles as the milk comes out faster. It does get easier to breast feed the longer you do it. I breast fed the second son until he was 2 years old. He loved it and he is over 3 now. He still reminds me how he liked mummy to feed him. He is a bright boy and very chatty. He rarely gets sick.
ALl the best. If you can do it breast feeding is the best.

Later in breastfeeding I used fenugreek. At two weeks, though, I would make sure you're drinking enough water (more than you can imagine) and try to feed in a quiet room where you can relax. I had trouble with my second child because the first was stressing me out. As soon as I established a no craziness zone, things staightened out.

Congratulations! The more often your breasts are "working" to produce milk (i.e. either feeding your son, or pumping), the more milk your body will produce. Hang in there! It will get easier. Your body will adapt to the demands of your son, and you will get "in sync" with your son's schedule.

First of all congratulations! Second of all, showering in warmer to hot water will help stimulate production of milk. Just let the water run on you. Avoid cool showers, as this will cause a reduction in producing milk. Good luck.

There is a tea called mother's milk and a supplement called fenugreek(not sure on the spelling) that work great and you can get them both at GNC. Also pumping between feedings will help. it can be frustrating and stressfull so remember to relax and let your body do the work. Your milk will come trust me. Hope that helps.

Try pumping between regular feedings. Make sure you are getting plenty of fluids and nutrition. It is amazing how many calories you burn nuring a baby. Relax, your body will adjust, simple supply and demand. The more the baby (or pumping) takes, the more your body will make. If you give supplimental bottle feedings your body thinks there is less need to produce milk and will cut back.

I had trouble with my milk supply with my first baby.I was able to raise her on breast milk, but it was a challenge at first. You have to have faith that you can do this! I learned alot about nursing/milk supply, and my advice to you is:
1 Nurse your baby on demand
2 Stay Hydrated and well nurished
3 Rest and relax- the house can wait
4 Know that you can do this
5 Let him nurse when he wants to, because the nursing is what creates the milk supply
You can also find a local lactation consultant, call your local hospital for a referal. Also get the La Leche League's Breastfeeding Book- very informative.
You can do this!

We have 4 girls and I have breast fed them all. The first was a nightmare and sheer determination of will. Here is a little plan that worked for me. I would nurse the baby on one side until she fell asleep. I would then pump the rest of that side and the other side. The next time I would nurse, I would nurse the opposite side, pump what was left after she fell asleep and pump the other side. Ok, I should back up a bit. She did not know how to nurse when she was born. She would hump her tongue and rub me raw on the end of the nipples; to the point that the lactation specialist said I had to stop nursing or permanently damage my breast. She said in 25 years of helping people nurse she had never offered this advice but it had to be done. So, I started pumping both sides every 1 1/2 hours around the clock, yes, I was a die hard nursing mother thinking I was getting my only change and I WAS going to make it work. I would then use a special devise to finger feed the baby the breast milk and retrain her tongue. My husband and mother were a BIG help during this first month. By the time the weeks had passed she was nursing well and so I started the above plan. I also ALWAYS nursed the baby on demand b/c pumping does not stimulate production well, in my experience, it just removes the milk. Actual nursing is the only thing that stimulates milk production. The more the baby sucks, the more milk you will make. We also own a dairy and I see this in the case of the milk cows also. We leave their babies on them and there always seems to be a full order for us and enough for baby calf too b/c the calf is sucking all day everyday - not just at 8 am & 5 pm. Also, Every time our daughter opened her mouth, I put her to the breast. I laid down with her for nursing times so I could also rest and I did let her pacify at the breast. I NEVER found it inconvenient. I ended up going from not enough milk and having to supplement with formula at 4 days old to having enough for triplets. I had at lease 3-5 months supply of extra milk in the freezer when she quit nursing and was able to use it over the following months for eye infections (yes, breast milk is wonderful to drop in the eye when there is a little conjunctivitis) and to give her to keep her immune system boosted as we hit society and germ alley as a toddler:)> Hope this helps, A.

Q.- I was right there with you when my son was born 9 months ago. The first thing I did was consult my lacation consultants, they were the best and the advice they gave me was to pump 30min-1hour after each feeding for 5-10 min.I did that and I have been doing great! So great that I have donated 2412 EXTRA ounces to the milk bank! I also started out on demand feeding and I couldn't keep up with him so we went to a schedule and that also helped regulate things and keep me from stressing out. HTH.

I had the same problems. Everyone tells you to pump after you feed to encourage more milk but that didn't work for me. Go to People's Pharmacy and get Mother's Milk Plus capsules and take the max that you can/day per the directions. It is herbs that encourages bm production. I used it with both my boys and have met lots of moms that have used it...totally safe. Some people can wean themselves off of it over time but I had to use it all the time I was breastfeeding.

For now, don't be afraid to supplement a few feedings with formula if you have to so that you can get your baby to a 3 hour feeding schedule....it will make your life so much easier. Also, if you try and pump after each feeding you may get 1/2 oz or so on each side and you can supplement with that on the next feeding or freeze it to use later.

If you suspect your baby may not be latching properly or is not a good 'sucker' you should go see the lactation consultant at Special Addition on Lamar...she is fabulous and everyone that works there are great resources for a new breastfeeding mom.

If, after all of this, you still aren't producing enough milk, talk to your obgyn. There is a drug they can give you that is used for reflux and has a side effect of increasing bm production. I tried it but the way it works is to suppress dopamine production (your feel good hormone) and it made me feel really bad so I stopped it.

The drug that they used to prescribe for this was domperidone which worked better for breastmilk and had less side effects but the FDA got into a fight with the drug company and basically said that they can't prescribe it for breastmilk production anymore but it wasn't a safety thing at all and the drug that they use now is the exact same type of drug as domeperidone doing the same thing but less effectively. So I talked to my obgyn and while she couldn't 'condone' it, she wasn't concerned if I got domperidone on my own (and I know several people that have done this) so I ordered it from inhousepharmacy.com which is out of New Zealand. The brand name is Motilum (because it encourages motility in the gut) and it worked like a charm and let me continue breastfeeding my second son until he was a year whereas I didn't use it with my first son and had to stop about at 6-7 months.

I know this is a huge amount of info but I struggled with low bm production and feel like I tried everything under the sun so I wanted to share it. Hopefully, the herbs will be enough for you! Good luck!!

Congratulations on you baby boy. I had the same problem and my lactation consultant recommended Fenugreek. You can get it from GNC. The reason I recommend Fenugreek because 2 weeks after I had my baby, I had low milk supply and on top of that I was readmitted into the hospital for a week. During the time, I had to pump and dump and quite a few times I was to lazy to pump. My milk supply decreased. After I came back home, I took Fenugreek and breastfeed...my milk supply came back and I had enough milk for my baby.

Hope this help.

Mother's Milk is an herbal tea for that purpose. Oatmeal is something I have personally tried and had some success with it upping my milk supply. Fenugreek is an herbal supplement for increasing milk supply. I'm know you already know this, but nursing like crazy is the number one thing you can do to up your supply. When I was in the hospital with DD, I was trying to nurse her every 2-3 hours like that nurses told me to, but she would start screaming about an hour after nursing. She lost a bit more weight than I would have liked in the first couple of days. Once I started feeding her whenever she seemed fussy or anything, she was happier and my milk was flowing like crazy! After a few days of nursing very frequently, she seemed finally satisifed and her feedings began to space out more. I also have to make sure I drink tons of water so I can keep making milk. Hope this helps!

Until my supply came up I was feeding like every hour, but once it got to where he needed the feedings spread apart and my supply stayed up. I also drank "Mother's Milk" from the herbal store and put honey in it cause it tastes horrible. You can also try Fenugreek in pill form if you don't want to drink the tea. I hope this helps good luck and remember your doing the best thing for your baby.

I had this problem, too, with two babies born 3 years apart. Here's how I solved it:
1) 1 gallon+ of water a day. Fill a gallon pitcher in the morning and drink, drink, drink all day long until you feel like you're going to float away.
2)Mother's milk tea (at any health food store)
3)Fenugreek (at any health food store) take as many as you need to start smelling like pancake syrup. (It's a breastfeeding mom's perfume of choice, you know! heehee) I took anywhere between 12 to 15 a day for a week or so until my milk started flowing really well. After that, only 4 to 6 a day or so, for me. You may be different.
4)Pump every 3 hours with a hospital grade breastpump, after feeding for 10 minutes on each breast. The hospital-grade pumps are much stronger than any you buy at a big box store. Your local La Leche League can point you towards someone you can rent one from. I'm in Houston and know of a store out of Rice Village and also a lactation specialist in NW Houston where you can rent one. Seems like I spent around $50 a month, but it was well worth it! Contact me personally if you need the names.
5)Last, but not least, eat, eat, eat!!!! Lots and lots of healthy foods....fresh veggies, whole grains, fruits, etc. If you stay away from the processed foods and fattening stuff, you will not gain weight, and will hopefully continue to lose. I had to eat a whole bunch, and stopped losing weight after the initial 1st 2wks after my babies were born weight loss. The rest of my weight came off after I stopped breastfeeding. It's no time to worry about weight loss, though, just eat healthy and you'll have enough calorie and nutrition-wise to produce milk. The weight can come off after breast feeding is over. While I was breastfeeding, it seemed like I was constantly drinking water and eating. The grocery bill was pretty high, since I ate lots of organic veggies and fruits.

Things to avoid....decongestants, birth control pills with estrogen, antihistamines, alcohol, and many OTC and prescription medications. The first three can completely dry up your milk supply, alcohol decreases it by as much as 40%, and many other medicines reduce or dry up your milk.

Good luck! Let us know how you do!

All of these suggestions I got from my lactation specialist, who is also a LaLeche League person.

First of all, I would go see the pediatrician and have the baby weighed, because my mother-in-law convinced me initially with my first child that I didn't have enough milk. What might seem like very little to you is all they need. I remember thinking my baby wasn't getting enough so I went to see a lactation consultant and she said that the baby was doing fine. She weighed her, checked her out and said she was gaining weight well and looked healthy and alert.

If you are still concerned afterwards, you might want to try pumping. It is a great way to increase your supply. They rent good quality electric pumps at most hospitals. I had a lot of trouble at first with my first daughter (before we left the hospital). She had problems latching on. I had to pump initially until my daughter gathered a little extra strength and figured out how to nurse.

Good luck. I hope someone else can give you some information about herbal teas.

Try a herbal tea called "Mother's Milk", I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the company who makes it. You can usually find it in the tea isle at the grocery stores. If not, try a vitamin or herbal shop. Also, letting the baby breastfeed frequently helps stimulate the production. My youngest used me as a human binky, so needless to say I was able to produce enough. Don't forget to constantly drink water. Stay away from sodas, coffee, and black tea (because of the caffeine), plus be mindful of any medication that you are taking. Over the counter sinus meds and/or prescription meds can cause difficulty with your milk production.

Remember anything that you eat or drink will make its way into your breastmilk. Your doctor's office can advise you on the number of diapers that indicate the baby is getting enough. Just grab a piece of paper and note every diaper change and time you changed him, and before you know it you will have proof that your baby is on target! Congratulations on your little one! You are giving your angel a great start nutritionally and creating a very special bond in the meantime.

Hello, Q. W!
I don't know who you mean by "we"....you and your husband/baby or doctor...I would definatly consider talking to your pedi to make sure he's gaining enough. If he is, you're probably doing just fine. Remember, he's only two weeks so he's not going to be eating a lot yet. You're just really starting to produce so try not to worry about it....stress doesn't help production either. Unless you're pumping you really can't tell how much he's eating....in both of my girls, i never knew how many ounces they ate at a time...i just nursed them until they were done and it was very often. I nursed each of my girls for a year and when i went back to work (at 6 & 8 weeks), i believe i used Fenugreek (pardon the spelling). It's an herbal supplement that is supposed to help milk production. I don't really know if it acutally helped but it's worth a shot. Supply and demand is the way it works so the more often he eats the better off you'll be. I know some doctors even recommend pumping in between feedings. There a great La Leche group here in Beaumont if you feel like you'd like some extra support. I didn't get a chance to make any of the meetings but i emailed Heather a lot and she was VERY helpful!!! Now if he starts crying uncontrollable and seems like he is hungry you may have to supplement until you can get your body producing. But drinking as much water as you can is extremely important. That is where the milk comes from. So in Summary put him on every 1 1/2 to 2 hrs and drink lots of water. PS You will be stuck to the chair for the next month.

You should talk to your OB or contact the local La Leche league. I made a tea from Fennugreek, which seemed to help. But a lactation specialist will definitely get you on the right track.

Hello,
I have a 22 month old son and I was able to nurse for the 1st 5 months. What helped me keep my milk supply going was that right after I nursed him I pumped each breast for 10 minutes each. It did not matter if I got any or not, but that made my body think that I was nursing that much and so it started to produce more milk for my child. I also made sure to drink plenty of fluids and tried to stay stress free. I don't know if that will help any but give it a try, it worked for me.

Make sure you are drinking plenty of water and rest. Stress can lower your milk supply. Make sure that your baby is latching on properly and staying awake long enough to almost empty your breast. Pump if you are full and he is satisfied and it will create your back up milk supply which you can refrigerate for about a week and freeze for up to 6 months. There is a mothers milk tea. I would check the organic section in any grocery store. It might even be in the tea and coffee aisle. Herbs that will increase and enrich your milk are alfalfa, milk thistle, blessed thistle, and marshmallow. Above all nursing your baby should be an enjoyable experience. Very soothing to both of you and wonderful bonding time with you and your baby. Take care and good luck! V.

PUMP!!!
Breastmilk is on a supply & demand basis. The more you need, the more you will pump. I would pump every hour, just one side. That leaves milk for the little one.
DRINK LOTS OF FLUIDS! Water, juices, tea. Go easy on anything caffinated. I was told by my caregivers that a little wine or beer in the evening would help produce more milk. I honestly think that it just relaxes you enough that when you have a let down, you milk will flow.
RELAX! Go to a quiet place and keep you nerves in check. Allow the let down (pads in your bra help lots!!)Lay on the bed and snuggle when you feed. Your milk will flow freer.
I have only one concern, however, is you son gaining weight?? If you don't think you are making enough milk, you should have him weighed. If he is gaining, you are making plenty.
I hope that helps!!

Just a thought but dont try anything that your body hasnt had before. You dont know if there is something in the teas that your baby my be allergic to. It just takes some time. Try chilling out alittle before its time to feed. Try not to worry so much about it some times the mind works in mysterious ways. Try mind over matter. I know that sounds stupid but some times that works. Think positive. Some times a warm shower helps, let the warm water run on your breast, kind of massage them while in the shower. I breast feed both of my children and loved it. Just DON'T give up. And try not to get frusterated the baby feels that. Make feeding time a quite time. Hope everything works out for you. Feel free to send me any more emails. Have a great day and God Bless.

1st pump or breastfeed every 2 hours or less if you can, the more your breasts are used the more milk you make. I just moved from Houston, so I don't know if there are any near here, but at Whole Foods they have something called Fenugreek. That also helps. You can probably find it other health food or vitamin shops. If you are taking birth control pills, that can hinder the milk supply along with excessive caffine, alchol and certain sinus medications. hope this helps, if not call the nearest WIC office and talk to the breastfeeding peer counselor (they have them in Houston, not sure about anywhere else)

Hi there-

Fenugreek is the most common herbal suppliment that you can take. The best one out there is the Nature's Way Fenugreek Seed 610 mg. Take 2-3 pills 3 times a day. Fenugreek usually starts working in 72 hours. OR, you can take More Milk Plus, which is a liquid pill. This contains Fenugreek and 3 other ingredients to increase milk supply. With this pill it goes by weight, so under 175 pounds, you take 1 pill 4 times a day. Over 175 and you take 2 pills 3 times a day. More Milk Plus usually starts to work within 24 hours. You can find Fenugreek at any HealthFood store, but from what my customers have told me the GNC brand is not as strong. We carry both the Fenugreek and the More Milk Plus and you can either come into the store at 1960 and Kuykendahl or order it from us online at www.thebreastfeedingshoppe.com. Hope this helps and feel free to call me if you have any questions-###-###-####. Some of our moms have also said eating oatmeal in the morning has also helped with their milk supply! Mention mamasource when you come in and receive 10% discount. If ordering online, use the code mamasource.

Well, the breastmilk should come in like supply and demand. Nurse your baby as often as possible, and your body should produce enough for the baby. If that's not the answer you were looking for, there is something called Fenugreek that you can take and I heard it really works. Good luck!

Don't worry. Your body will produce exactly as much milk as your baby needs. I thought I wasn't producing enough either because when I'd pump, I'd be lucky to get 1-2 ounces. However my daughter still thrived. I have found that eating oatmeal has increased my output by 2 ounces (an ounce each side). So I'd try that first because you know it's safe and not to mention a healthy breakfast for you. Dont give up. My little one is now 5 months old and a healthy 16 lbs. Best of luck and Congratulations on your son.

Get a good breast pump and pump in between feedings. That will 'stimulate' you breasts to make more milk. I'd check with a doctor about taking herbal stuff since most of that stuff passes through the breat milk and to the baby as well. The Medulla (sp?) breast pump is a fantastic brand. See if your insurance will cover rentals for the pump. IT IS WONDERFUL!!

Good luck,

answers from Austin on

Oh man, I have had ALOT of trouble with this too! I've had alot of help from Drs and lactation consultants and this is what I have found to help:
Nurse as OFTEN as you can! The more nursing and stimulation, the better your milk supply will get.
If you pump about 10 minutes after you feed him, or right after, it will stimulate more milk production too.
Make sure you're eating well and drinking lots of fluids.
I started using Mothers Milk herbal tea. You can get it anywhere really, like Central Market or Whole Foods, somewhere like that. It has a combo of herbs that stimulate your breastmilk production. You drink 3-5 cups a day, and it really did help me.
Fenugrek is an herb that increases milk production. But be careful with it becuase it is a natural blood thinner so taking too much of it can bruise your baby. Alot of people use that too.
And if none of that works, the dr can prescribe you some Reglan, which is a medicine used for nausea and vomiting, however it also induces lactation.
Hope this helps!

Also-- NO ALCOHOL! There is a myth that beer helps with your milk. IT DOESN'T. I am a nurse and have done some research on this. All alcohol, no matter if it's beer or vodka, decreases milk production up to 40%. If you have trouble with your milk supply, like me, stay away from it as much as possible. I had to completely give it up!

Hey Q.,

Congratulations on that beautiful baby boy!

As a former nursing mom and Parent Coach, I want to mention several points to think about:
1) The breastfeeding book "The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding" recc by Wendy is wonderful. It is put together by La Leche League and helped me tremendously.
2) The more often and longer you nurse your son anytime you want to increase your supply (even when he is 4 and 6 months old) the greater your supply will become - increase "demand" and your body will increase its "supply".
3) Another great resource would be a lactation consultant or a successful nursing mom who has a supportive, encouraging nature.
4) Your supply can be affected a bit by your attitude when nursing. Know that you will succeed, will have enough milk for his needs and then relax and enjoy bonding with your son.
5) Some moms (myself included) were very successful nursing but not too successful pumping. I finally decided it was not worth my time to pump and just nursed exclusively.
6) If you are concerned, speak with your Pediatrician and have your son weighed periodically to make sure he is gaining weight as the Pediatrician expects. This will also reassure you that all is well.
7) Make sure to drink plenty of fluids. It is easy to get mildly dehydrated when nursing and not know it. This can affect your milk supply and make you feel more fatigued.

8) RELAX and enjoy this precious, precious baby and your time nursing. This is a beautiful time of life that will be gone in a flash but will bring both of you many benefits.

YOU CAN DO THIS!

Let me know how its going.

Take care,
J. B

The only thing that helped me was to feed more often....even when my milk was in the early days of coming in I let my little boy 'feed' when there was probably little or no food there and within a week it was as plentiful as he needed. (You can try pumping milk to stimulate the supply too, but the babies natural sucking motion is meant to be the best way)
I also drank loads of water and fennel tea (although I didn't think it was very nice!)
Maybe these things will help - good luck

Hi there,

There is a tea called mothers milk. It is an organic tea and it tastes terrible but it works like a bomb :)

Make sure you're drinking lots of water and the more often you feed, the more milk you will have.

I breast fed my son until he was 16 months old. He was only 4lbs 5 oz at birth and now is a healthy 25lb boy.

If you don't want to change the frequeny of when you are feeding your baby you can pump in betweeen feeds and then freeze the milk for later use and that will also increase your milk supply.

Hope this helps

Hi,

I have nursed two babies successfully. I am not sure I can help, but I will give you some advice as to what I did. The first thing is do not try to diet at this time. Eat as many healthy calories and drink as much water as possible. The extra fluids in your body should help increase your milk supply. Also, if you can remember to, try to drink a full glass of water while you are sitting nursing your baby. As your babies appetite grows your breast milk should be able to keep up with his demands, if not, you might ask your pediatrician about supplements for your baby. Just remember the more you feed your baby, your breast milk should increase as long as you are eating enough calories and drinking plenty of water.
I hope this information was helpful.
Good luck to you and your brand new baby son......

With each of the babies, I tried to make sure they nursed at least 10 minutes on the first breast and then however long they wanted on the second breast. I also increased my water and milk intake. I am a midwife and also a childbirth educator. I would recommend that you increase your fluid intake, take your prenatal vitamins and also try drinking alfalfa tea. You can also try different positions. If you hold your baby in the football hold it helps to drain your breast in a different way that will encourage milk production. To do this hold your baby with his legs by your armpit and head by the sternum. This is funny to get use to but it really works well. Good luck.

I learned that one of the easiest things you can do is drink alot of water. Your body uses whatever you put into it to create breastmilk, this includes hydration. A nurse once advised me to drink a large sports bottle of water everytime I breastfed my oldest daughter, and to relax. The less you're stressed the easier it will be to breastfeed and produce milk.
