Breastfeeding and Period - Wyandotte,MI
Okay so 7 1/2 months after I had my son, I got my first period since the post-birth bleeding. I was just spotting at first then I was full on bleeding bright red blood and it has slowed and stoppped and started again lasting now over 2 weeks. All the while I breastfeed. I don't know what's going on with me. I was wondering if this has happened with anyone else.

Yes, it did and still is. I think my hormones are all kinds of jacked up. I started 6 months post partum and got on the mini-pill. My son is 18-months now. I stopped bf'ing when he was about 11-months. I have since been on two different pills and still bleed for about two weeks. Sad to say, I have gotten used to it. Sorry, if this sounds discouraging...hopefully your hormones will even out quicker than mine!

Almost certainly normal!
It can take up to a year after giving birth to get your hormones back on a solid "schedule", even without the added breastfeeding. If you're not experiencing any other symptoms (pain, very large clots, foul smell), you can relax and see how it goes for a few more months. Mention it to your Dr next visit, but it should resolve on it's own.
As long as you're breastfeeding, it may stay irregular, though- for some women it's not a factor, but for some it really IS. Also, you don't mention your age, but perimenopausal hormone imbalance can start in your early 30's, and while it doesn't affect your fertility, it can wreak havoc on your cycle. Again, mention to your Dr.
It will get better! :-)
ps- don't forget to keep taking your Iron!

My first period after each of my two children was really heavy and lasted longer that "normal." I was exclusively breastfeeding and got started periods again about 5 1/2 months both times. Since it's been 2 weeks, it's probably worth a call to your health care provider - especially if it's not slowing down.
