Breast Growth Experiences

I realize that everyone runs the gamut of what is typical or 'normal' and that literally every person is different. However, I am curious once your little girls' breast area started to become tender or painful how long after did they start fully developing breasts? Or, was this indicative of something else entirely? My daughter is on the cusp of 9 years old and asked me if her boob area hurt because she might be growing, similar to why her legs hurt while she's growing. I let her know that most likely it has to do with her hormones and that her body is gearing up for puberty but that doesn't mean she'll be needing a bra anytime soon. Due to her body proportion I do have her wear undershirts with everything except pajamas as she has enough up top to notice when she gets cold or that can be seen through thin t-shirts.

She is my first child and only girl. I've talked with her pediatrician about this but honestly all she told me was to base it off of when I started to develop. I'm a petite person and was never granted the 'curves' of a woman aside from hips. My daughter is less than a foot shorter than me and weighs more than half of what I do. Please note she is not obese but rather built to her own specifications. :) I'm just curious about all the various experiences you moms have had either with your own daughters or have seen for yourselves. Thanks for any answers. :)

ETA: I know my daughter isn't anywhere near an A cup or even 1/2 A. She is a little chunkier which is why I have her wear the tanks beneath her clothing. Once she reaches the point of needing more support or coverage I have no problem at all getting it for her no matter her age. I hope to heck she's not built like me up top and actually gets to "fit in" in this area of development. I know how hard it was on me to be teased relentlessly, heck even now people cannot believe I've given birth to two children and still have nothing to show for it. LOL Life is funny that way.

What can I do next?

I don't have daughters, but I will tell you that my breasts hurt when I started developing. I specifically remember my dad praying at night with us for nightly prayers and asking God to help my breast pain, LOL!

That was 4th grade. I got my first bra in 5th grade. I don't remember when they stopped hurting, but I was thin and small-breasted. There was a skinny little girl named Marsha in my 5th grade class who just had little buds. You could see the little buds through her shirt, but she had no breasts at all. The boys teased her because she wasn't wearing a bra. It would make her cry. Her mom wouldn't buy her one because she didn't have breasts yet. FINALLY, in the middle of the year, she got one. I suspect that the teacher had a talk with the mom because Marsha was in tears every other day, and finally had the courage to tell the teacher. (I wonder why we girls didn't go tell on the boys - I knew they were teasing her, and I didn't think to tell the teacher either!!!)

So I guess I would go get her a bra when she asks for one.

I hope that the pain goes away soon. Perhaps wearing a sports type bra might help with the pain - I don't know.

My daughter didn't have pain, but she came home from summer camp in between 2nd and 3rd grade in tears because she got teased. So she would have just turned 8. we started with what I will call tween sports bras, so it's just like a tank top that is shorter.
She just turned 12 and we had to go get new bras and I bought her a 36B. Mostly because Macy's had NO 36Cs in stock except in underwire and I don't want her to have underwire yet. Yes, my 12 year old is a C cup.

FYI - as far as timing her Dr told me that you have about 12-18 months from when their breasts grow and they get the very fine pubic hair until they start their period. That timeline was fairly accurate for my daughter..... she started her period when she was 9.

I also believe that the larger a girl is, the sooner her cycle starts. My daughter is not obese, but is def taller than most of the kids (with a young b'day) and I think that has a lot to do with it.

Hi Proud Mom,

In short, as I am sure you know that Estrogen is responsible for breast developement amongst other things.

The amount of fat in a persons body, along with genetics, not necessarily your own, will determine her age of the onset of puberty. So, you can have a kid that looks skinny, but has more body fat and less lean muscle than their counterpart that weighs the same but has more lean muscle than body fat. As you said your daughter is built to her own specifications. This may include more body fat that others her age. My point is, neither factor acts alone.

Breast tenderness is perfectly normal just before the onset of puberty. The only time it is a concern is when it goes from a hard lump/bed just under the nipple with tenderness to a lump with bleeding or discharge from the nipple, then you sould consult your care provider.

I have two daughters now adult.

Hope this helps.

I think girls are going through PMS at that age. Their hormones are starting to change and they get very moody (along with their friends). It might be that.

Good luck! Teen years are fun...most days

My mother assumed I was going to develop like her (she's an A cup) and I was miserable because I needed a bra at age 12 in the 6th grade but was left to wear t-shirts.

At age 12, I was an inch taller than her and about 20 pounds heavier. When it was all said and done (by age 20) I reached my full height (four more inches and another 10 pounds) and we now know I am not built anything like her. Especially on top!

Believe me, back when the blossoming was all starting it was painful and strangely very itchy (probably the skin stretching out). She didn't get it. I was a big fan of oversized sweaters and shirts and carrying books in my front. My growth experience was not her experience at all, so she thought I wasn't going to need any real support for a long time. Or maybe she was just in denial that I was growing up.

Anyhoo, things didn't get bearable for me until the woman finally got a clue and had me fitted for a bra. I'm sure the boys in 6th grade gym didn't mind that I was fancyfree for so long though! ;)

Sounds like it's time for her to get a starter bra or maybe even an A cup if there is more. Yes, age 9 may seem young, but nowadays kids seem to be developing much faster. I've read many articles that hormones in the food supply has a lot to do with this.

If her breasts are visible in any way it is time for a bra and undershirt just won't do in some cases.

My oldest neice got breast fast and furious. In one year from January to December she went from an A cup to a DD. She is still a DD but a 34 DD as opposed to a 30 DD. She hates having such large breasts because it is very hard and very expensive for her to find great bras.

My middle neice developed slowly and is a solid C. While my third neice went from a D to an H while pregnant at 16. She is now down to a DD but is only a 32 around the back which makes it hard to find affordable beautiful bras.

My three older neices have breasts gallore. I just got breast after getting married 3 years ago and my sister has nothing and is the official queen of the IBTC. I've since getting married have been thrown out. I'm a solid C now at long last.

Neither of my girls had pain, both started developing just before eleven years.
