BPA In Canned Ready to Use Formula?!

Hello! I am having a mini (okay, moderate) panic attack at the moment. I have been feeding my 5 month old son canned ready to use Parent's Choice (Walmart) formula since he was about 2 months old. The canned formula seemed to fill him better and he didn't spit up as much with the canned (he has reflux). I recently came upon an article that talked about the levels of BPA (Bisphenol A) in canned infant formula. I had heard before my son was born about the danger of the chemical in bottles so we chose to use the Playtex drop ins. I am beside myself! Does anyone have any idea what the effects are on babies and children who have been exposed to this? Is it too late for him if now since we're changing to the powder? Has anyone had any experience making their own formula? Any help is appreciated. Thanks very much!

What can I do next?

Please don't freak out. I spoke to my doctor about this because my daughter is 4 and back when she was a baby there was no concern over BPA. Think of the thousands of children that have used the formula in BPA cans and baby bottles. My doctor said to use reason and think of the hundreds of things that could have BPA in them. Juice bottles, water bottles, canned food, etc. She said that as long as you don't go overboard heating bottles, drinking water from something that has been sitting in the hot sun, etc, we really don't have to worry. Since it is babies we are talking about you can be a little extra cautious, but there is no conclusive evidence that it affects every child in some way. All plastices, glass, and metals "leach" chemicals into things, so there is really no way around it.

You're a great Mom!
Buy some glass baby bottles and try this quick recipe :)

Formula Recipe
1 quart goats milk (Powdered has less Vit.A – 6% as opposed to 10% liquid)
1 Tbsp. carrot juice
1 Tbsp. flaxseed oil
1/4 Tbsp spirulina –blue green algea, packed with nutrients (water soluble)
1 Tbsp molasses
3 Tbsp. maple syrup
400 IU Vitamin D (water soluble)
1000 micrograms (not mg) folate (folic acid)

*use of powdered goats milk with
vitamin D and folic acid already added
is an option too*

Add the flaxseed oil first
then the molasses. It will come
right off and you will get the entire
teaspoon.

This recipe was given to me by a craniosacral genius. I’ve fed it to my breastfed son when I run out of pumped breastmilk. He doesn’t even hesitate.
The first time you buy all the products, it will cost about $30. All but the goats milk can be used for several batches. So you’ll just be buying a $3.50-$4.50 quart of goats milk every week-or as often depending on how much your baby eats. Cost effective and healthy! And you know what’s in your baby’s “formula”. (go to a co-op, whole foods, the wedge, etc and buy quality products)

The book "Nourishing Traditions" has a couple of homemade formula recipes. I've never tried them; I read the book too late for my first son, but I would make homemade for any subsequent children.

Also, goat's milk has been used on infants since time immortal. Remember, babies survived LONG before commercial infant formula, even when their mothers could not breastfeed.

Hi C.! I just want to say that you cannot go back. You can only protect your baby from what you believe is bad from this point on. Do not worry about effects that your baby may or may not have because of being exposed to BPA. With my two kids I had no idea that plastics break down the way that they do! I was beside myself for something I did not know. I just had to let it go and do my best from that point on.
You are doing a good job! BPA is a good thing to avoid. You thought you were avoiding it and now you are making sure that you do.
There is a recipe for formula on the weston price website. There is also a recipe by Sally Fallon in her book "Nourishing Traditions".
I have never made my own formula. I did, however, add adcidophilous powder to the bottle to lessen spitting up. I also took my babies to the chiropractor to help with reflux.
Good job mom!

I'm not sure if this will put your mind at ease but the FDA did say not too long ago that BPA was safe. Copy & paste this link into your browser: http://www.webmd.com/parenting/news/20080815/bisphenol-a-...
Who knows what they will say tomorrow, but as of right now, they say it is fine.

The FDA has said that BPA is safe, however, it has been concluded by thousands of independant studies that BPA is NOT safe. The FDA has been right on many things, but they have also been very, very wrong on many things. Think of all the pharmaceutical drug recalls. Yes, we need the FDA to regulate things, but we also need to take it upon ourselves to do our own research on things like BPA. I spent countless hours online weighing the different opinions on BPA, and when my daughter was 5 months old I decided to switch to the Playtex drop-ins as well. I also immediately stopped microwaving in plastic altogether. All of her food, and ours goes in glass pyrex bowls or onto Corelle plates before microwaving. It's just as easy as plastic and I can rest easy now. As far as the formula in metal cans, it's probably no different than formula in plastic cans. From what I have read, the most dangerous amounts of BPA are leached during microwaving, or when a container goes from the cold refridgerator straight into the microwave.

One other note, many people like to say "we've been using plastic since we were kids and we're fine", or "I've been using plastic on my 10 year old since he was born and he's fine", but many studies are finding out that BPA is causing the cancers we have, the diabetes we have, the obesity we have, the ADD kids have, as well as fetal deformities, etc. People assume these diseases are "normal" and can happen to anyone. True, but there are ways to prevent them, and chemicals like BPA are things to avoid whenever possible.

My boyfriend actually read the entire study that was released which evoke the BPA knee-jerk (he's into these sorts of things). Now, trust me, I hate additives, and I think there are far too many chemicals in everything we use and consume. With that being said, according the research, the rats used in the experiment were given doses equal to something like a million times more than any individual is exposed to in a life time...hence their adverse reactions. Now I am not preaching pro-BPA, but of all the things in the world to be concerned with, this is only one among the many. Don't stress yourself over nothing. We, as moms, have plenty of other things to worry about...

Happy mothering...

BPA is an additive in some plastic baby bottles and other plastic containers. If the formula is in an aluminum or tin can, it shouldn't have any BPA in it. The problem is when the formula is heated in the bottle or the bottle is washed in the dishwasher and not rinsed before using. The solution is to make sure the bottles you are using don't have BPA in them or get new plastic that doesn't or even glass. Bottles without it our now labeled.

There was a series of articles on the dangers of BPA in the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel several months ago. The articles should be available at JSonline.com. Nobody really knows the true danger, but I think it's better to avoid BPA if possible.

Yes, it's true that there is BPA in the canned formula. Is it too late? No, it's never too late to make a healthy change in life! But the sooner the better. I'd purchase some glass baby bottles (you can see a wide selection of them here: http://uggamugga.blogspot.com/search/label/bottles) and I'd research formula.

I'd love to help, but don't know anything about them as I've only breastfed. But I'm sure there are many healthy options out there that will be great for your baby boy.

And congratulations on making healthy choices for him!!!

Not that it really puts a mother mind at ease but BPA is in just about everything. plastic even the linings of tin and aluminium cans. truthfully the fastest way to get to your baby was when they are still inside of you as it travels through the blood stream, and can bind with certain genes to cause cancer. but as someone said before the levels do have to be very high. you can take precautions where you can by not heating things in plastic limiting soda drinking, and eating more fresh foods as opposed to canned. If the levels where high enough in baby formula then it could not be sold in the US. There are probably not many people that have not been exposed to it. IF you eat or drink anything you are exposed and there are plenty of people that are still very alive! Take a deep breath and do what you can to avoid BPA but it is not going to cause your son to get sick today, next week, or even next year.

Hi C.,

Congrats on your new baby boy! I am not going to talk about whether BPA is good or bad, because there have been enough answers about how there really are no answers yet on how bad or benign it is.

However, my knee jerk reaction when reading your request was that you need to take a breath. You are a year younger than I am. When I was a baby, my mom put me on my tummy to sleep. I was immunized, I never sat in a car seat, there were no outlet protectors, and no baby gates. I didn't wear a helmet when I rode my bike, didn't even wear a seatbelt until I was around 12, and I lived outdoors during the summer. Etc. I am sure that unless your mother was extremely hyper vigilant, your childhood was probably very similar to mine. And we both survived. We had some skinned knees, bumps to the head, and yet I think that my brain is still working fairly well even with the lack of sleep at my house.

My point is that every so many years, they will come out with dire warnings about how this or that is a danger to babies, and how children are getting seriously sick from something. There are dangers out there, but you need to keep everything in perspective, or you will need to be medicated to survive each day to prevent anxiety attacks. Due to 24 hour news channels, we hear about every bad thing that happens to people all over the world. The news channels know that fear sells, and nothing is more frightening to anyone than hearing how something bad has happened to a baby or a little kid.

Our mothers didn't hear about every child in America that died of an accident. This is a new phenomenon. They only knew about what was happening in our communities. Bad things do happen, and it is tragic, and certain things have saved lives. But a lot of people have also gotten very rich off of the fear of our children's well being. There is nothing that sells products faster than letting you know that your baby will either be seriously harmed or die without this thing.

Bottom line is that while it is important to be informed and to be a vigilant parent, you need to try and keep some perspective and realize that so many of the scary things that the news channels and manufacturers are selling us are to make them money, and not for our wellbeing. Not to mention the fact that as humans we are very resilient, and so are babies, they are tough cookies, and barring any tragedies, they tend to do just fine.
