BPA Free Food Storage

There are some stainless steel options if you google. We have a toddler and use glass, but we use really thick Pyrex ones from Meijer and haven't had an issue with them dropping, even on the tile.

This website will give you info on how to tell if your containers have harmful chemicals in them by looking at the recycling number on the bottom of them. If they don't have a number, I'd toss them. #3, 6, and 7 are the most dangerous.

I put a saftey strap/lock on our fridge. Just another option for you to keep little ones out of the fridge. I don't actually use it much, but it's nice to have for when he is "in a mood".

Oh PS: even if your plastic containers are made out of safe plastics, you should still NEVER microwave in them. It releases toxins into the air. I keep some glass around just for microwaving.

I loved them so much I got my MIL, Aunt and Grandmother all sets - they said they adore them!

I got the Snapware glass lock line. Super sturdy. The lids are still plastic, so if I need to microwave, I just make sure the lid isn't on.

I just bought some BPA free Glad storage containers at Costco. And there is a coupon for them good until April 3rd :-)

Have you considered using glass? I use all glass Pyrex or Anchor food storage. They have BPA free lids, I believe, but I never fill the container full enough to touch the lid.
I see now that you don't want glass......I have a toddler and a 6 year old. My glass containers get dropped on a regular basis (often by ME, go figure!) and not one has broken.

Plastic containers with the numbers 2, 4 and 5 in the recycle symbol on the bottom are considered the best bet.

I just read about silicone storage containers as a good alternative -- the company name in the article was Kinderville.

Try Whole Foods. They have a line of plastic food containers that is BPA free. I am not sure if they are microwavable but worth checking out. Good luck!

I buy new containers every few years because they just get so bad looking or appear to have gotten worn through. I store my food in the plastic but transfer to a plate or other dish to microwave. I was reading some research reports online--all 3rd party items, not the Federal departments studies--the other day and they found that the only time there was any kind of "leeching" of this was when microwaving for more than a minute or so and even then it was low. They found nothing when just storing the food.

I also have a lock on the fridge. It is always in use and very easy to open the fridge. I have even gotten to the point that I can open with one hand. My d would sit in the fridge eating the yogurt if she could get in there.

Pyrex containers are safe with toddlers, if you ask me. They are thick and do not break or chip easily.

I bought a few sets at an outlet mall and they are great. I ask my 4 year old and my 2 year old to put them away for me and they are learning to be careful.
