Hi,

I returned to work in September and have been pumping during my work day and giving her botles of my milk at daycare. The weird thing is all my bottles that I have been using, and even parts of my pump have turned pink! I didn't have this happen years ago with my first. And now my darling little girl is sick so Im wondering... did the bottles do that?! (I have a slight paranoia streak.)I wash them in the dishwasher with Cascade and use the sanirinse cycle. Anyone ever have bottles turn colors in the dishwasher? What shoudl I do with the bottles now?

What can I do next?

It's my understanding that ISOFLAVONES are found in both soy and cabbage products. In other words, if both of these foods contain isoflavones, and one (cabbage) is known for causing red stains, could soy products (despite not being pink in color)like cabbage, contain a similar compound that causes non-harmful discoloration? It could be that if you're eating a lot of soy or foods that contain the isoflavones that its coming out in your breastmilk.

Tonya's response that her bottles are turning orange makes me wonder if it is something in your water. Different minerals make them change colors.
I can understand your concern, but some plastics take on colors...I've stained tupperware by heating tomatoe sauce in them.
Sorry I don't have more suggestions.

I am a childcare provider, and I often run the bottles of the little ones in my care through my dishwasher. Maybe that is happening at your daycare too...? I know there has been a lot of nervousness about plastic recently, so maybe there has been a change in what type of plastic the bottle maufacturer uses. If you still feel a little bit uneasy about this, I know that there are a non-plastic options available now for bottles. You could do a search online and I am sure you would come up with MANY options. Blessings to you and yours! :)

I have the same problem! I use the medela bottles that came with my pump, and for the past couple weeks I have noticed a couple of them are getting an orangie tint to them. I have no clue why, but like you, I know they are clean. Also, the medela bottles don't contain the harmful plastic chemical in the news lately, so I just decided I'm not going to worry too much about it.

*UPDATE*

I found this thread on another website:

"I soak my plastic dishes in hot water mixed with baking soda t remove the stains when they happen. I used cascade and found the same things happening as you do. Not sure what does it but i have lost many gladware containers to the trash becuase of it. I recently bought a new dishwasher and switched soap and the no longer turn pink "

another person wrote:

"The Cascade plastic booster does work. I had several plastic dishes that were red tinged (we do like spaghetti!!) and this stuff cleared them right up."

I would talk to your pediatrician. That just sounds bizaar and I would be nervous about that as well.
