Booster Car Seat - Murrieta,CA

My 5 year old daughter is only 38 pounds but the straps on her 5 point harness booster seat now fall below the top of her shoulders on the back and they are on the highest setting. I am not sure which is more of a safety issue - to keep her in the harness with the straps too low on her or to move her to the backless booster before she hits the 40 pound mark. Anyone have any insight?

What can I do next?

If her shoulders are over the top harness slot, she needs another car seat ASAP! If the harness goes below her shoulders, she's at serious risk of spinal compression in even a minor collision, even braking too hard. Get her out of that seat right away.

A forward facing car seat is outgrown when one of three things happens, the child hits the weight limit, the ears are level with the seat back, or the shoulders go over the top usable harness slot.

At 5yrs old, she is physically mature enough for a booster seat, but its up to YOU to decide if she is mentally mature enough to keep the belt on at all times (not putting it behind her back), not leaning or reaching, not letting the belt slack, and sitting upright at all times. If she can't do these things, or if she still sleeps alot in the car, you should consider another higher harness weight car seat like the Graco Nautilus. Its $150 at Wal Mart (and they ahve a pink one!) and it will harness to 65lbs and fits most kid in the harness until 6/7yrs old, and then becomes a high back booster, and eventually a no back booster.

If you feel she is mature enough for a booster seat, insist on a high back booster seat. The Graco Turbobooster fits smaller kids very well and is a great seat for the price. Again make sure you get a HIGH BACK booster. A no back booster is not appropriate for a child under age 6/7.

Get another booster seat.

My kids are tall for their ages... and our boosters can adjust to accommodate their growing height.
My kids are heavier than your child, and 42" tall for my son, and my daughter is about 50" tall.
Our boosters accommodate them just fine.

Our boosters, are not 5-point. But we are pleased with it and it has good ratings.
These are the brands we have, for our boosters:
Compass
Britax Parkway

If you go to www.amazon.com you can see it AND read the reviews of it.

I personally, do not like backless boosters.

all the best,
Susan

You can go to a car seat inspection with her and your current booster. Find a location at www.seatcheck.org. Free and valuable information!

Get a Britax 5 point car seat that will go up to 85 #! Then you won't have to worry about her outgrowing another car seat! They are MUCH safer than a booster car seat and it's better to be safe than sorry........ Our 5 year old daughter is in the Regent (they quit making them) and it goes up to 80# but I know they now make one that goes to 85#. She's had it for 9 months and LOVES it!

my kids are both in booster seats, ages 4 and 2 1/2. Theyre really tall for their ages. We got the ones with the tall back but you use a regular seatbelt to buckle them in. They can convert to backless when the child is big enough. Our brand is Evenflo and I love them! They are crash tested for side impact even and are really good for the money.

I second the inspection advice, keep her in the seat as long as you can for her safety.

No backless booster! Google kyledavidmiller for more info on why you should use a 5point harness as long as possible! We have our tall 2.5 year old in a britax marathon which will keep her harnessed to 65lbs, and our tall 5.5 year old in a britax frontier booster, which harnesses to 85lbs.
