Books - Olathe,KS

Hello Mamas, I am looking for good summer book suggestions for my kiddos. My boys are 12 and 9. Are the Rick Riordan books geared for kids that are older than 12, they seem like they might be a little scary? My younger son is a bigger challenge as far as I'm concerned because he thinks he's sooooo big and doesn't want to read anything he considers too "babyish". My older son will be in the 7th grade and my younger will be a 4th grader. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you.

What can I do next?

Sterling Point Books has a series of historical non-fiction books aimed at ages 12-16, that are really well done. My oldest who is 9, is a huge fan of them and has bought several from the series, so even though the reading age is middle to high school, your youngest may enjoy them also. See some of the titles he has read:

Another series to check out is the Living History Library published by Bethelehem books.

Hardy Boys is always a good bet. The original classics and the newer series are both entertaining and certainly not-babyish.

Some other titles to Google or check on Amazon:

Usborne True Adventures, The War of the Worlds by HG Wells, Detective Forsoothe, Will Solvit Series, Chronicles of Narnia, Action Files, Star Wars/Clone Wars Series, Greek, Viking/Norse, Roman mythology books, any of the classics like King Arthur, A Wrinkle in Time, Journey to Center of the Earth, Frankenstein, Holes, Sounder, Scholastic CSI series.

Here are some suggestions for ages 8-11 http://store.barefootbooks.com/catalogsearch/advanced/res...

And ages 12+

Hope that helps! Honestly as long as they are reading it's awesome! Let them read whatever interests them this summer. As other suggested, many libraries have a few lists or shelves of books organized by grade.

Hi M.!
My kid is 11 years old, and his favorite author is Rick Riordan, he devoured the author's books! . He already has read twice each book..... He also likes Harry Potter and books related to mythology and ancient civilizations.
"The Diary of A Wimpy Kid" is also fun to read (it doesn't teach anything, but it's fun).

Your local library should have a list for each boy's age group. If they don't, I bet the school does. I would try that first.

take them to the local library and talk to the librarian. he or she can recommend appropriate books for the appropriate ages. I know one that is popular is diary of a wimpy kid the 4th grader may like. I know they have a movie out based on this book. harry potter books may be good for your older son and they movies based on these books too. have them read the books then offer to let them watch the movies once they read the books.
