Book Recommendations for Potty Training and Positive Parenting?

I also use lots of books for my son about potty training, he is intermittently excited about it (totally lost interest after starting preschool, tho)...but it keeps it up-beat.

As far as parenting, I LOVE the "love & logic" parenting resources---all about teaching kids responsibility & making choices, even from a toddler age.

Positive Discipline for Preschoolers, by Nelsen, Erwin, Duffy - I believe they have similar books for toddlers, children, teenagers, truly wonderful.

The Emotional Life of the Toddler by Liberman is also Excellent.

These books will strengthen both your parenting skills and healthy, loving attachment with your children.

Bye Bye Diapers - it's a book you read to your child...

I am all about following your instincts... My 10 month old had the hardest time going to the bathroom when I started him on solids 6 weeks ago - that I sat him on the toilet so that he would be at a different angle - it worked it was a lot easier for him to go, but much to my surprise - now he says, "Ba Ba" when he has to go and wont go in his diaper at all - - - Follow your child's cues and you will be fine....

This goes for positive parenting - no one knows your child better than you - because you know yourself and your babies father - - -

I used the Potty Train in a Day book but modified it for my twins. I have read alot of parenting books my favorites are Positive Discipline, The 5 Love Languages of Children, Boundries for Children, Money Doesn't Grow on Trees, Teaching your Children Values and Teaching your Children Responsibility. You can find all of these titles at the library. I always keep a book in the Bathroom- it's the only place I can have peace for 5 minutes! Enjoy the ride because it's a short bumpy one!

Another vote for "Once upon a Potty" (again, comes in both boy and girl versions) and "Everybody Poops" or everyone poops, or something like that. For positive parenting, "The Happiest Toddler on the Block" is good.

We tried various books with my son including "Once upon a potty" and "Potty Time" but the books did not work for us. We tried www.3daypottytraining.com, and that worked like a charm.

Here is a link to some great resources about parenting and family in general. They are by a Christian pastor, but even my husband, who is not a Christian, found them extremely helpful in raising our kids. 'Positive Parenting' and 'What I Want for My Children' were/are invaluable to me. Now we've moved on to 'Parenting Teens' in this house!

As for potty training, we went to the library and checked out all of the potty training books together. My kids really liked to sit with me and read about kids learning the same things they were.

The American Academy of Pediatrics Guide to Toilet Training (Paperback) - $10.20 new on Amazon.com. I bought a used one through Amazon for about $5 after paying overdue fees for the library copy :) I recommend buying a copy because it was great to refer back to at different stages. It's clear, concise and logical. It really answered all my questions.

I read the first chapter of my book and we read his book at random. However, after nap I would put him in "fun" (dino's, Thomas, Cars) underwear and ask him every once in a while if he had to go potty. And it took three days of being excited to put on his underwear and he has only had 3 accidents in 3 months. And if he did have an accident I wouldn't get upset. I just tell him sometimes accidents happen. He would really get upset at though. We still read him his book. But I never got past the first chapter. My husband and I split our time so that's why I only put him in underwear in the evening. My husband didn't think it was a good idea. But my son proved him wrong. It was awesome. I do however still put him in a diaper at naptime and nighttime. He usually wakes up from nap dry. But not nighttime. Goodluck!

I just got my son potty trained and what help the most was getting books for him about potty training. I would read the books about the child getting a new potty and he loved it and it got him motivated. Also get lots of underwear you will need them. Be patient! And tons of Great job's and you are being a big girl/boy!!!!
