Hi M.~
I would very highly recommend "Shepherding a Child's Heart" by Tedd Tripp. That would be my first choice. Another good book is "Bringing Up Boys" by Dr. James Dobson. Hope this helps.

Try the Bringing up Boys by Dobson. There is also a book about raising a modern day knight, which I haven't read and don't know the exact title, but have heard about it. I have read Don't Make Me Count to Three by Ginger Plowman and Shepherding a Child's Heart by Ted Tripp. They are for both genders and are Christian in their underlying orientation. But, what makes them so good is the shift in focus from just "getting our kids to just behave" to "getting into their heart." So what if you get a technically obedient kid if in their heart they are despising correction, hating others, etc. These books have changed my parenting with my son. Give them a try.

Good luck.

No idea if there are any books on raising boys...I have 4 kids, 3 being boys, ages 17, 12, and 8 mos. They are all different, have their own personalities, opinions, likes, dislikes, attitudes, and demeanor. I have pretty much just winged it with em, and they are doing fine. Be careful what you read, as you may somehow get caught up thinkin, my son does not like/do that, is there something wrong?

My advice...love your child with all you have, pray daily, give it to God and all will work out>

Good luck and God bless

At some point, and it is never too early, you may want to check out Liberated Parents, Liberated Children by Faber and Mazlich.

Companion workbook How To Talk So Children Will Listen, How To Listen So Children Will Talk. (Same authors)

Parent book to that, they studied with this wonderful man is Between Parent and Child by Haim Ginot.

I've read tons of books, and these changed my life profoundly.

I don't think I've ever read a parenting book. My boys are grown now, so I guessed I missed the book boat! LOL. I have three boys who are each a year apart. The teenage years were especially fun. I was the only female in the house, and I used to say that our house was a cross between a frat house and a monkey cage. We had the hang-out house, and the place was always full of hungry, loud boys. My kitchen was always been stripped clean of food, too. On one memorable day, the refrigerator door literally fell off, much to the amusement of every boy in the house.

There is a movie that I like, though. A very old movie. I don't know if it teaches us anything, but whenever I see it, I so identify with what it's like to bring up boys. It's called "Follow Me Boys", and it's an old Disney movie with Kurt Russell. It's about a boy scout troop. The boys in town were getting into trouble, and Fred MacMurray comes along to save the day by starting a scout troop to get the little hoodlums off the street. It is completely hokey, but it's all boy! The special goofiness and energy of boys is there. The tender hearts that people don't seem to expect boys to have are there. It's really wonderful, if you don't mind the old-fashioned movie making.

I just had a meeting at my house last night. I had 6 teenage boy scouts here with their parents. The boys are preparing for a 100-mile backpacking trip this summer. They are just a joy to have around, but they are loud and exuberant, sometimes rude and smelly. LOL. I never tire of their silliness, and I never cease to be amazed at how they step up to the plate when they have to. In one moment, they are the most responsible bunch of young men you could imagine, and the next they are all bouncing off the walls, joking and grandstanding. Boys are a special creation in their own way. Just as girls bring their own special blessing into the world. Enjoy your boy for what he is. You're going to have lots of fun as he grows up.

One book I've really found helpful for me is the book "Bringing Up Boys" by Dr. James Dobson (published by Tyndale House Publishers). I'm the mom of two boys, a 15 year old and a 5 year old (also have a 6 year old daughter).

I have three boys 10, 9, and today 8. I really learned a lot from "Bringing Up Boys" by Dr. Dobson. It was a real eye-opener to see how feminine our world has become, and that boys were meant to be "snips and snails, and puppy dog tails".
I hope it helps you out.

Hi M.. I love the book Why Gender Matters by Leonard Sax. He talks about both boys and girls, but what he says about boys is eye-opening. He explains why boys and girls act differently and it's really fascinating. I've told lots of friends with boys to read it.

I'm always looking for more books to read about raising a son (I have a three-year-old boy), so if you have any recommendations for me, I'd love to hear about it.
