BOOGERS And COUGH!!!

I have a 4 month old baby girl and she has had a cough and nasty boogers for the past 8 days. I took her to the doctors the first sign of the cough and she put her on antibiotics and Brohist??? They are not working as well as I though they would. The nose has gotten better but she still has the stinkin' cough!!! She HATES the medicine and gags every time I have to give it to her. Any recommendations to help my baby feel better cause MAN I HATE it when she is not felling well!!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?™

OK...Thank you all for your different ideas!!! She seems to be getting better. Now she is just sneezing and the coughs are lingering far and few between. I appreciate all your input and will use the advice in the future as well!!! Thanks again!!

It could be that she has a virus, not a bacteria infection? Sometimes viruses can hold on for 2 weeks. My daughter tends to get a cough with her colds, but has only been on antibiotics once.
Good luck, it sucks when the little ones are sick

I am by no means any kind of medical professional but my son had a runny nose, congestion, cough, and double ear infections back in Nov. When I took him to the doctor she put him on antibiotics for the ear infection and albuterol for his cough and brohist for congestion. well 2 weeks later he still had it and she said that he had RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus)to keep giving him his albuterol and brohist for the cough and congestion. She did prescribe me another antibiotic but that was only because his ear infections wasn't gone. She said that his body was fighting to get rid of the RSV so it was neglecting his ears. and RSV is a virus so antibiotics won't work for it. She told me that it takes about a month for RSV to run its course in babies. So you might have to just continue to give medicine for cough and congestion and watch your baby. If she seems to be getting worse I would take her back in. Especially if she seems to have trouble breathing. I don't want to scare you. If it is RSV and it gets to bad she could be put in the hospital. My son did just fine and didn't have to be put in the hospital. RSV is contagious also. Mostly to other babies and elderly. You can get sick too but more than likely you would only get a runny nose. I would try to keep the 4 year old out of the baby's face just to make sure if she coughs she doesn't cough on him. Also wash you hands a lot. I know you probably know to wash your hands and keep the 4 year old out of the baby's face but just wanted you to know that it sounds like she might have RSV since it isn't going away and give you a heads up. First of all, finish the antibiotic. However, if she still has symptoms, it's likely that this was a viral infection and the antibiotics weren't even necessary. Many upper respiratory infections will have a "lingering cough" that lasts for a week or two after other symptoms are gone. Of course, there are some types of cough that would require a nebulizer. Our son has had "reactive airway" due to upper respiratory congestion and the nebulizer really helped him out. However, for standard run-of-the-mill colds and sinus congestion, the best thing that has worked for my son has been nasal saline and suction, and robitussin. There are different brands that make the same thing, but the ingredients you're looking for are guafinasen plus a cough suppressant. Guafinasen thins the mucus so it moves and drains more freely. You'd need to check with your doctor on the dosing though because your daughter is so young. The brohist she was given is probably a combination decongestant and antihistamine. I don't know why doctors prescribe decongestants to children under 2 because I've never, ever heard of those medicines working. And antihistamines only affect symptoms if they're caused by an allergy.
Good luck!

If she hates her meds please take them to your local CVS/pharmacy and ask the pharmacist to flavor it. Flavor RX is the greats thing, it makes those yuckie liquid meds taste so much better for your little one and as a mom makes you feel better because you know your little one is actually taking the meds. The cost is only $2.99 but unfortunatally most of our pharmacists forget to talk to us moms about it. While you are there talk to the pharmacist about the cough as well, he or she may be able to give you some advise.

Hope your little one is feeling better soon!

Have you tried warm, steamy showers? I know when 2 of my kids where small that really seemed to help moisten their throats or something and they didn't cough near as bad or as often. It still helps with my 2 two old when she gets a stuffy, boogery nose or a cough. We have also had to use a nebulizer on them at different times (our first experience was with a 2 week old) so you might check with the doc. Hope she feels better soon!

My son had a cold a few weeks ago. The dr. recommended that we put a humidifier in his room at night. Also, recommended that morning and night, to sit in the bathroom with him with the hot shower running for 10 minutes. The steam helps loosen mucus. At the end of 10 mins, she said to use the bulb sucker (official term =)) with saline drops. She said that when you suction one side, to hold the other nostril closed with your finger to get better suction. That really helped get my son some congestion relief.

My son also seemed to have more cough symptoms than nasal symptoms, but I was still able to get a lot out of him this way. I hope your daughter gets to feeling better! It also never hurts to call the doctor back and ask.

get a vaperizer or humitifier. im not sure which you will have to check into it. but thats what helped with Olivia. we have had to use both so im allways geting them confussed. but it seemed to help. yea Olivia had the same thing and the med didnt seem to help. oh and if you can have a lil juice ready for her right after you give her the med than the tast of the juice some times gets them to not think about it. i had to make taking the med fun for Olivia.she wouldnt even sit in my lap when she spoted the bottle at first. well i hope she gets over it! Good luck!
