Blood Work at First Prenatal Visit

We found out that on my first visit I was only seven weeks. The appointment was scheduled a week earlier but due to a family emergency with the doctor they rescheduled. So i would have only been 6 weeks. I had an ultrasound since there was one in the office and the little guy was only the size of a coffee bean! Most doctors won't see you until you have missed two periods. However, they want you on all those vitamins too. (Doesn't make since if you ask me.) Anyway, your REAL first visit will take forever because of the ultrasound and bloodwork. Don't worry!

I am now in my 26th week, and my first appointment even with knowing I was pregnant wasn't until my 8th week. I had the exam, a urine test, and blood work all in that one appointment. When I called to make the appointment they told me that my doctor doesn't see you for the first visit until you are atleast 8 weeks. The nurse told me that his reasoning is that until then, there really isn't anything to see. Plus they really like to wait until the 10th week so that they can hear the heartbeat. Since then I go to see him every 4 weeks and until my last appointment (22weeks) they just made sure the heart sounded good, and felt the abdomen to make sure that felt right. At the last one they started to check for protein or anything else in my urine, but that so far is all they have done. I am high risk, so I would think if there was more to do, they would have done that already! Hope this helps and makes you feel better.

When I found out I was pregnant the last time, I had a severe pain and went to the emergancy room. Thats when they did all the blood work and found out I was pregnant. They then had me go to the hospital the next day and have an ultrasound, they said they couldn't really see anything, but it wasn't in my tubes. So they (like your doctor) had me come back in two weeks to make sure, and there was a little spot in my sac. and they said I was definitly pregnant. So maybe that is what they are doing with you. I'm not sure, but you shouldn't worry because it won't help the situation. Keep your chin up, this doctor sounds good. He did an ultrasound already didn't he? that means he's very carefull. They'll most likely do it at your next appointment, but if you're worried, I'd call the office and ask what their protocol is. Most of the time, blood work is scheduled at particular "weeks" during your pregnancy. Good luck with your pregnancy!

I am almost 10 weeks pregnant myself. I had gotted my tubes untied to get pregnant so I had some blood work done early to make sure it wasn't ectopic, but my regular blood tests were done at my 8 week appointment. Don't worry yourself about only seeing a sac. At 4 weeks that is what you should see. At 6-7 weeks you will see a fetal pole and after about 8 weeks you should see what looks almost like a baby. I have ultrasound pics if you would like to see them. Seeing a sac is a good thing. Good Luck and hang in there.

Most doctors don't do blood work on the first visit due to expenses for the parents to be. My doctor has always said that if you get a positive on a home pregnancy than you are pregnant. Also, on an ultrasound you can't see anything but the gestational sac until you are at least 6-8 weeks pregnant. For peace of mind though, I would call your doctor. They should have explained that to you.

my first visits were basically the same. a confirmation of pregnancy and collection of basic info. We didn't do any blood work until the 2nd visit. Also, I believe that once we had that initial "stop by and say hi visit" Our next one wasn't until about 10 weeks. Only because it seemed like FOREVER b4 it came time.

It is still really early in the pregnancy so I wouldn't worry too much about the sac and I know that my doc doesn't even see a pregnant women until they are in their estimated 10th week! And if I remember right most of the bloodwork was done after my first visit at 14 weeks. I am sure that it is different with each doctor, but I would call them and ask so you feel more at ease about it. Congratulations on your pregnancy!

I thought the same thing at my first visit. All I did was pee in a cup! If your doc is like mine, you will pee in a cup at every visit and they can check a million things just from that. They probably will not do blood until 18-20 weeks when they do the Quad screen, which is optional anyway. Best of luck!
