My son got blood on one of my favorite dresses and I wasn't able to wash it right away. I tried Oxyclean which did absolutely nothing, does anyone have any tricks that might take it out. Thanks in advance!!!

What can I do next?

Get the dress wet and put table salt on it. Let is dry, if its not out try again. Do not dry it til the stain is gone. Hope this helps

Hi M.,
I feel ya! I've gotten blood on a white shirt & a friend told me to put peroxide on the spot(s). It bubbles, just like when you put it on a cut, & pulls the blood out. I usually rinse it after & put stain stick on it or spray it w/ stain remover. Good luck!

Hi, M.!

Even if you can't wash it right away, peroxide works great. And remember to always use COLD water with blood stains.

(You didn't put it in the dryer after washing with Oxyclean, did you? If so, even peroxide won't work now.)

Good luck!

hydrogen peroxide always works for me.
Another tool is Fairy Soap. Someone gave it to me and I'm not sure where you get it but it's a bar soap.

Wash it in salt water. My son got hit in the head with a golf club a few years back, and the people in the hospital told me not to throw away our wash cloth but to do the salt water to save it. Works great!

Try Nature Bright from Shaklee's Get Clean Line. I have found that to get EVERYTHING out even red wine that sat on my husbands brand new shirt for 2 weeks!!!
My girlfriend used to throw her old scrubs away if they got blood or iodine on it, now she just used Shaklee and it comes out everytime!

Pleae respond if you need any more help- Oh and Peroxide will eventually break down the fibers in your clothes and ruin it. Be very careful!!

I would have to agree with the Dawn blue soap! It works like a charm on chocolate and blood! I start with putting it on and then scrubbing the fabric together and then leave it soak for 15 minutes to 30 and then wash and out it comes! I use it in every load just to make sure we get all stains and it works very well!

I always use bubble bath. Just get the stain wet with the bubble bath and throw it in the wash. Works every time.

warm or hot water will generally set a blood stain, so you want to be sure to use cold water. This is especially true if it is fresh.
Hydrogen Peroxide should work. good luck!

If it's fairly recent, place the dress in a basin with water and about a tablespoon of table salt. My mother is a bacteriologist and said the table salt will grab on to the blood cells imbedded in the fibers of the dress and will "lift" them out.
Make sure you don't throw the water from the basin into the washing machine when you wash the dress, though - pour it down the drain instead.

Hope it helps!

Hi M.,

I use hydrogen peroxide. You can get it from any pharmacy section at a drug store or Walmart, Kroger, etc. I just put it straight on the stain and let it sit for just a bit before washing it. It works great for removing blood. I learned this trick from my aunt, a nurse. :)

I hope it works for you!

My typical spot cleaners, oddly enough, are shampoo and dish detergent. I scrub them quite a bit, and I usually get almost everything out.

I have also used peroxide (the same kind you use to disinfect wounds) to help lift stains. It works especially well on bodily fluids. I might test the fabric in a hidden place to make sure it doesn't lift the color of the dress. It hasn't happened to me, but it's better to be safe than sorry. ;-)

Another option I have used to lift stains such as accidents the kids and pets have it soaking items in full strength Clorox 2 for Colors. Funky smells and nasty stains generally come out.

My cocker spaniel is not fixed, and I put panties on her when she's on her cycle. Instead of hand washing all those things, I bought cheap styrofoam bowls to soak dirty items in. I let them soak for a couple hours. All the stains are lifted, and it just needs to be rinsed out in the sink before throwing in the washer. It's removed chocolate, mustard and catsup stains that sat on my kids clothes for days before making it to the washer machine. I've even had Clorox 2 for Colors lift stains from items that have been dried, so I always have it available.

I've tried Spray and Shout, Zoom, and the Tide Sticks for stains, but they do not work that well in my experience.

I don't know what material you're dress is made of... here's what I use. Take some OLD white towel or washcloth and put in on the backside of the spot. Take another and dampen it with hydrogen peroxide. DAB the spot - DO NOT RUB! If it's a large spot, start at the outer edge and work your way in. Keep moving the under cloth to a clean spot. It will come out - you just need to be patient :)

the best way to remove blood stains is with hydrogen peroxide. my husband gets a lot of bloody noses, so it's been a Godsend to find something that will remove it from his shirts, pillowcases, etc. I have not had problems with bleaching of items, but I would ask your dry cleaner (they probably know fabrics the best) what their opinion is based upon the kind of fabric.
Good luck
There's also a great site - the Queen of Clean - who says she can remove any stain.

My son has chronic nosebleeds so I've been dealing with bloody bedding, pillows, clothes, carpet, etc. for about a year. The trick that I have found - and I feel like I can get dried blood out better than fresh - is blue Dawn dish soap. I wet the blood spot, put the soap on, scrub it in, let it sit for a bit, and then scrub it under warm water. 99% of the time it works great. Takes some elbow grease and you may need to repeat the process but it works. Best wishes on getting the stain out.
