My daughter has been sick lately. When we went to the Dr. on Monday I was told that she had another ear infection. She is on antibiotics for it. She has been getting better but today I changed a BM diaper and there was a lot of bright red jelly like blood in the diaper. I called her DR. and he told me to take her to the hospital after hours. I have an appointment to take her tonight. She is not constipated so I dont think it was a tear of anykind. She is very happy and does not act like her stomach is upset. She has not had very much to eat today (only formula and not very much). Has not had much of an appetite. But it has been like this sincec she got sick. Has anyone experienced blood in their babys stool before. this is kind of scary.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all of the information and support. We went to the hospital and they tested it and said it was not blood. The antibiotics caused it. I was so relieved and surprised. She has been on antibiotics before and it changed the color of her stool but this was totally different. Anyways, I am just glad that it is nothing serious. Thanks again.

Just a thought...my daughter was on a antibiotic that (because of the iron in her formula) made her stools red. It looked bloody. But I don't remember jelly like substance being there. My son got salmonella when he was younger. That caused the jellyu like substance. Hope these give you ideas to take with you to the dr. I hope she is ok. Good luck!

I know blood in the stool is an indicator of dairy allergy, but I think you're talking about more blood than what is usual for that.

Please keep us posted. I hope all is well with her.

Hi M.,

My youngest son had blood in his stool when he was about 2 months old due to being allergic to milk protein. We switched formulas to pregestimil and that worked. Have you made any changes to your babies formula?

My son had that and it was a urinary tract infection, you might have them check her for it. Good luck and let us know how it goes. It is scary, but most of the time, it is nothing big.

Dr. Sears weighs in here about this matter:

Glad you're headed to see the folks at the hospital. They will be able to help, I'm sure. It will be okay!

Please do let us know how everything turns out.

Antibiotics can sometimes play a number on your gastric system. Many times it causes diarrhea. I hope that it is something simple like that.

Is your daughter ok? The only think i could think about the blood is that maybe the antibiotics is eating her intestines. Antibiotics are the worse for the body since it kills a lot of the flora in you stomach etc. And since she is so little and only drinking formula, she does not have any solids to help her stomach absorb the chemicals. Unfortunately, everyone has at one or another take antibiotics for infections otherwise things could get worse. No win situations. I hope your daughter is doing great, let us know about it.
Take care,
A.

Hi M.,

I was just at the Dr.'s office this morning and was reading in one of their magazines that sometimes baby's with food allergies will have blood in their stools. I pray it is as simple as that for you. Good luck and God bless your little baby girl.
