Blood After Bowel Movement

Our daughter was severly constipated as a toddler, once she was potty trained and since taking Childrens DHA every day....that was it and all was good.
She only goes about every other day....(not good I know) Recently she has been going and twice we noticed blood splashed on the side of the toilet, but the other times when we wipe her with the flushable wipes there is quite a bit of blood (more than spotting). We ask over and over if her tooshy hurts and she always says no. How the heck could that not hurt. I think because she is holding it every other day, it is quite large and tears at her. Anyone deal with this? She is only 4. What can we do?

Have a discussion with her doctor about this. After that, I would add more fiber as suggested by others. Before you try medication and stuff she may not eat like broccoli, see that she eats two apples a day. Apples have both soluble and insoluble fiber in them in just the right balance to give one a perfect stool sample. And apples don't give you diarrhea or abdominal cramping like laxatives or fiber supplements.

Hi J.,

Talk to her dr about it, first. Second, I would increase her fiber intake. Broccoli, peas, and beans are great for constipation. Also try a little pureed pumpkin (very high in fiber) on bread or crackers as a snack or prune juice in the morning. Watch the amount of dairy she is getting. This sounds a lot like hemorrhoids and your little one's bowel movements are causing them to tear.

Good luck.

I really think you should be asking her pediatrician this question. Blood present in stools/urine could be a symptom of something else. I don't think you should try to diagnose on your own...even if there are nurses and Drs that respond to you here.

I go through that with my 5 r old son. He has had BM problems since he was a few months old so I know where you're coming from. We give our son children's benefiber. 1 teaspoon in his juice, oatmeal, cereal, whichever he is having in the morning. He doesn't notice it is in there and the tiny bit of extra fiber regulates his system enough that he goes a lot easier. No more tearing or bleeding! He had been on mira-lax by prescription of a pediatric gastroenterologist, but his body got too relaxed and he would have accidents. That may be a good place for you to start though if she were having pain. We've also used the pedia-lax laxative strips for when he goes too long (over 2 days) without a BM. As long as we stick to the benefiber routine he is just fine though. Good luck!

a tear in the anus is called an anal fissure. I had one post delivery and can tell you that if you've never had an an anal fissure it feels much like passing glass with every bowel movement. The pain level of it is compared to passing kidney stones and natural child birth. So I think you can rule a tear of the anus out. Sounds like hemorrhoids. As to what to do: focus on keeping her regular by limiting constipating foods (white flour) and adding high fiber foods. Easier said than done.

I am glad I read this. I am an Endoscopy Nurse. How much Blood? More then a table spoon is not good. If les then yes most likely it is Hemorrhoids. Either way for her age you need to either start her on MIRALAX to soften up her stool( over the counter and mix in juice or water) and/or get her in to see a GI Doctor. Good luck let me know if there is anything else I can help with. T.

i would DEFINITELY take her to at least her pediatrician to start. And most likely follow up with a GI doc depending on what the ped says and how confident they are in the diagnosis and treatment.

Hi! Are you sure there is blood due to a tear? Although there could be a tear since she is constipated, there could also be blood in her poop. When my son was a newborn, he had bloody poop due to a bad reaction to the rotavirus vaccine he received. He went through many tests, including an allergy test and it was concluded that it was a reaction from the vaccine. I just wanted to suggest that if you are not 100% sure it is blood from her behind, that it could be an allergy related problem???
