Bleeding and Low hCG Levels

Last Wednesday I took a pregnancy test and it had a faint positive line. My husband and I have been trying for 8 months and we were very excited. At 3 am on Thursday I woke up and found that I had started bleeding. It was relatively light at first and got heavier as around noon that day (only about as heavy as period). I called my OB and she sent me to get some lab work done. I got the results on Friday and my hCG level was 98. She told me that it was high enough for me to be still be pregnant but that we would need to get more blood work done on Monday. I stopped bleeding on Friday evening. I just got my results from the lab work from yesterday. It has risen to 167. She informed me that they typically expect the levels to double every 48 hours and it is therefore lower than they would like but that still doesn't mean anything is wrong. I have to have more blood drawn tomorrow.

I would like to know if any of you have had any bleeding and lower than normal but still rising hCG levels and have went on to have a normal pregnancy.

So What Happened?

Well this morning I received my test results from the blood work done on Wednesday. My hCG levels dropped to 34 indicating that I have lost the baby. The doctor had my progesterone levels checked at the same time and the test indicates that low progesterone was not the problem. Thank you for all of your helpful and encouraging responses that helped me keep a level head while waiting on the results. Right now my husband and I are trying to cope with our loss and trying to figure out where to go from here.

I had bleeding early in my pregnancies with both of my boys.
Don't know what my Hcg levels were they were never tested.

First one I panicked, and the doctors office put me on bed rest over the weekend and saw doctor first thing on a monday. Ultrasound showed a normal pregnancy, but there was a blood clot on the placenta. Nothing to worry about he is now a healthy 6 year old.

Second child had bleeding and thought it was a period, did not relize I was pregnant till a month later. He is now a healthy 3 year old.

When I was pregnant with my first and only child, I bled quite a bit. On the day it started it was so much...more than any period I've ever had. I went to the emergency room and they thought I would have a miscarriage so they gave me pain pills and sent me home to do just that. But I didn't lose my baby, my hCG levels were progressing just fine over the next three days. I was put on bed rest for about two months and then my OB told me the bleeding was due to trapped blood behind the placenta. I bled for about three more weeks and went on to have a normal pregnancy. Now I have a vivacious thirteen month old son. So just take it easy. Some people bleed.

I just wanted to let you know that I had bleeding on the day I was supposed to start my period for one day...and then I started bleeding again the day I took the blood pg test for two weeks...a couple of days it was like a period and the rest it was just medium spotting. My hCG levels were not too terribly high at first, but after about three weeks they SHOT up. I now have a very healthy, extremely active 2 yr 3 mth old daughter!!!!!! Good luck and let us know what happens. I know it is easier said than done, but try not to stress....it is not good for you or the baby.

If your OB has confirmed that you are indeed still pregnant, did she put you on progesterone? Typically, this is a first course of action for moms with early bleeding and who have had a previous miscarriage.

I was also told I had low hcg levels, which were at 50. My doctor told me that I was either having a miscarriage, or an eptopic pregnancy, but they will continue to do blood work on me until they figure out whats going. I'm so eager to know. When I thought everything was going well I started bleeding out the blue. They do say that it is normal that your hcg levels flucuate throught your pregnancy, but to constantly be as low as 50 that can be dangerous.

I bled all nine months with my last two babies, ages 3 and 6. I never had the hCG levels tested, so don't know what they were. I had a midwife, and my midwife told me that bleeding is fairly common, esp if you are having a girl, or if you have had more than 3 children.

Praying for you!

With my daughter I bled once a month for the first three months. I have had a miscarriage, so it always scared me. She was very tiny, and even when she should've been big enough for us to find on an ultrasound we couldn't see her. I had to have my blood drawn every other day for a couple of weeks until the dr. was satisfied that I was keeping the pregnancy. I don't know what my levels were. With my baby my placenta didn't fully develop and she ended up being early and really tiny (llb 9oz), but now she is a perfect and beautiful two year old. Some people just bleed. My cousin started bleeding because her placenta had moved. She did not miscarry either. Don't think it's over until you know for sure. I know it's scarey, and hard to relax, but getting upset isn't good for your baby. I really hope it all turns out okay for you.

I had a lot of bleeding the first several months of my pregancy but all is well. I have 13 days before delivery by c-section. Just relax because most of my bleeding was due to stress and stress can make everything go hay wire. I was nervous about being pregnant over 30, working, etc. but all ended up well. Just follow your doctor's advice and call if you have any questions. I kept in very close contact with my doctor and his nurses. I did not want to lose this baby. Just hold on and let all your worries go, you can do this.

I would ask about possibly starting wih some natural progesterone. That will help maintain the pregnancy and is common practice for those with high miscarriage rates.

i knnow alot about this as I was infertile for 27 years and now have twins by in vitro you need to ask for you progesterone levels and you probably need supplementation for the first 3 mos keep on top of it now and you could very well have a great pregnancy

I had the same thing happen to me. At first they thought it was a tubal pregnancy because my levels were so low and not rising quickly. I had to go everyday and have blood drawn. It probably is just soo early that it will take a week or two to know for sure. I was only 12 days when I first found out I was pregnant. At 4 weeks they confirmed it was a good pregnancy and did a vaginal ultrasound to see where the baby was. Luckily it was safe it the uterus and not in my tubes. Hopefully this is the case with youand it is just too early into the pregnacy. God bless you and good luck.

Hi, When I was pregnant with my son in the first trimester I had a lot of bleeding, it actually ended up being a blood clot that was in my uterus. I would ask your Dr if they could do an u/s to see if they see anything, it may be to early to see the baby still but if it was a blood clot you may still it if there is any left. I ended having a beautiful healthy baby boy. I have also had miscarriages and I also have another child as well, so I know your fear, I hope your HCG levels keep rising and everything is ok which I'm sure it is.

My older daughter is now going in to her 4th month with her pregancy. She too had a hard time getting pregnant. on June 13th the Friday night before Fathers day she was having a bad asmah attach and had to go to the hospital for a breathing treatment. They wanted to do a x-ray of her lungs but as hospital procedure they did a pregnancy test and came back and told her she was pregnant.

She lives in Las Vegs with her husband which is in the Airforce. On Fathers day she decieded to come home to tell us we are going to be grandparents. On her flight home she started cramping and bleeding. We went to the doctor the next day and her HCG leve was low too. But also in the range that she could still be pregnant. They also did an internal sono and could not see anything. But a cicst on her overy. She was very sick with morning sickness the entire two weeks she was home.

She contacted her doctor back home and she did not want her to fly home untill she went back and had another sono and blood work to make sure it was not a tubla pregnancy.

After two weeks her numbers more than tripl and I saw the sono with the little sack and a hailo in it.

She went back home and has had some scare moments with bleeding and cramping but things are going okay except she has lost over 15 lbs and is sick morning, noon and night but there are days that she is okay. Her doctor said that she is doing great. The lates sono shows the little one. Her dad calls it peanut.

So don't give up yet. The main thing is keep calm no stress.

Best of luck.

Please talk to your doctor about progesterone or prometrium (same thing) pills or injection to sustain pregnancy asap!!!

I had 4 m/c and the same things happened before all of them. Once the level drops early in pregnancy, if it is going to sustain you probably need a boost in progestorone. Probably you are fine if your levels have risin, but just in case I would talk to your doctor about that, even before you are scheduled to go back. It doesn't hurt to be on it, even if all is well. I just had my baby finally in January, and I believe I would have never m/c if I had doctors that were smart enough to do this for me before.

Good luck to you!
